I still have a lot that I haven't played, but The Longest Journey tops my point and click list as well. It's currently about 5th in my all time list. Here's my top rated P&C games I have played, roughly in this order:

The Longest Journey
The Whispered World
Edna And Harvey: Harvey's New Eyes
Machinarium
Still Life
Harvester

Tied for best place for me :

  1. Grim Fandango (Lucasarts)
  2. The Longest Journey
  3. Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis (Lucasarts)
  4. Full Throttle (Lucasarts)
  5. Monkey Island 2 & 3 (Lucasarts)
  6. Day of the Tentacle (Lucasarts, again)
  7. Gemini Rue (Wadjet Eye Games, the only recent adventure company with quality similar to Lucasarts)
  8. Machinarium (though that's really a puzzle/adventure game)

Some others also come close, such as Syberia (1/2) and Resonance.

I know it's many but I assure you, all are masterpieces.

PS: And NO Daedalic games are nowhere near that quality. You get nice visuals yes, but story and characters forgettable, scenario mediocre. Can't compare in the slightest with the best in the genre.

It's a toss up between Broken Sword 1 and Gabriel Knight 1.

My brain always immediately goes to my fond memories of all the lucasarts games, but thinking about it, The Longest Journey, The Whispered World, Deponia, ... all made some great more recent impressions...

I haven't played many point & click games. I've enjoyed most of the Amanita Design titles.

The Longest Journey too. I reinstalled it the other day and I still have some flickering problems (I really want to use AA filter, graphics look a lot better)
