Are you looking forward to the standalone version of Gwent?
Well, good news for those who like it I guess :) For my part, I hate card games which are based on card collecting / deck building... It started long time ago, when I knew someone IRL who was very active in Magic cards trading and tournaments (this guy used to win tournaments very often because he had powerful cards which average deck simply can't beat)

It's more about finding the right synergy, and a tad bit of luck, really. I've managed to defeat decks worth x10 mine with a cheap priest deck in hearthstone. This deck in particular makes the deck of the opponent work against him (to an extent)

Please, let me think that my synergy skills are not the problem, I feel better that way :-)

I knew it wouldn't be long before people chimed in with comparisons to Magic and Hearthstone. Having only played both lightly, I'm not really in a position to discuss detailed systems, but from what I've gathered, Hearthstone in particular is a supremely well balanced card game. It wouldn't surprise me if the minds at Blizzard fine tuned the balance of that game to the last dot to make situations like the one you describe possible (and fun).

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Sorry, Hearthstone, balanced, good joke man. Also Blizzard balance is atrocious most of the time.

As I said above, I'm not really versed in the game, so no idea how current balance looks like. Last I heard (a long time ago, admittedly) the game was supposed to allow what was perceived as lower strength decks to win against much stronger decks with enough skill. But maybe I am wrong and that is not accurate.
As for Blizzard's balance as being "atrocious most of the time", that's not quite fair, I think. Blizzard are notoriously perfectionist when it comes to balance, just look at the time and effort they dedicate to nailing the balance in Starcraft, for example. Surely there are flaws, and I guess you can never achieve something akin to perfect balance, especially in a complex computer game that gets updated regularly. But I'd say for the most part, Blizzard do a pretty damn good job when it comes to balance. And importantly, they actually give a damn, often working on ironing out the kinks for years after their games are released.

I don't know about Starcraft, but balance on PvP/PVE WoW wasn't nowhere near to good, with classes taking turns on being absurdly overpowered. Hearthstone balance patches are scarce and they don't change much, a wide majority of the cards are trash too, and the game relies too heavily on RNG. Then they just released Overwatch with two blatantly overpowered characters (Widomaker and McCree) after a year of beta testing.

I don't play Overwatch but I heard people complaining about Bastion being OP. No idea if that's true, though. Overwatch is a new IP though and a completely new genre for them, and you can do all the beta testing in the world, but nothing will really prepare you for a proper release. (Not meaning to exonerate them, just stating a fact). I wonder how Overwatch will develop, might jump in myself at one point if I feel like it (a discount would help things as well - I can wait).

Nah, Bastion isn't OP, he's just badly designed, in my opinion. And I don't know the beta was rather widespread with a good number of players, so balance changes could've been taken into account.

Oh, I'm sure they changed balance based on the beta a lot, what I meant was that even the most expansive beta test pales in comparison to seeing how your baby performs after unleashing it upon the world.

Argh, I never liked Gwent. Even when I was forced to play gwent during the game, I lost and had to wear donkey ears in a party. xD

Geralt:
I'm looking for a woman with ashen hair. Seen her?
Then he plays Gwent for 15 hours.

I presented my bf with a set of printed Gwent cards for his birthday last year. At that time the XBox Collector's edition had the only two (out of four) Gwent decks.
It is really nice looking, but there are a few problems, if you want to make it into a physical game.

Interesting. Your second point kind of confirms what I expected, it works in the computer game as a nice diversion as you are introduced to more exotic cards gradually, so I wouldn't be surprised if they did a major revamp of the game's mechanics for the standalone.

Yeah, I'm glad they're working on different avenues of income like this one. Although last I remember, their mobile only MOBA thing based on the Witcher universe didn't go down too well and was axed some time ago. Its development was outsourced, though, so I have higher hopes for Gwent.

I just looked that up on Steam, didn't that go under a different name once? Or maybe I'm confusing it with another game. Oh and I have no doubt that it is a superior game, I think pretty much everyone agrees that Gwent in its current form doesn't offer enough to stand as its own thing.

....different name...? Uuuuh...i dont think so, its always been called Infinity Wars The Animated Trading Card Game, its honestly better than Heartstone too animation wise alone. Confusing with another game..? Uuuh... i wouldnt realy know... you actualy agree its superiour..? Well i mean Gwent is better on the complexity part but who likes that...? Doesnt offer enough to stand as a own game? Realy? Well..that might probably change for sure, but it still wont be animated.

UPDATE: More info and beta sign up here
So it's official now. Eurogamer reports:
Right now, there's a logo and not much else to go by, considering this is more of a leaked trademark filing rather than a proper announcement.
In case you are unfamiliar with Gwent, it is a fast paced card game that can be played with numerous NPCs in the Witcher 3. Here's a more detailed description.
Considering CD Projekt Red at one point even released physical Gwent cards, this doesn't really come as a surprise. Personally I am looking forward to a standalone version, as I found the original game quite spirited and fun, and a welcome diversion from the pace of the game proper, although my guess is they would need to add to the mechanics (not to mention new cards) to really make it shine on its own.
As it stands, Gwent is a very accessible game but lacks strategic depth compared to more involved card battle games. Granted, that is a huge part of its appeal, but I'm not sure if its enough to carry the game as a standalone outing.
What are your thoughts?
