The key to a woman's heart is always chocolate or jewelry, though not creative and they are safe gifts.
They can appreciate a nice cuddly bear too sometimes, you can even put a personalized picture on a t-shirt that they can wear, creativity is always rewarded, cover the bed with rose petals, give a nice sboulder massage, and she'll be in for a very romantic rest of the evening..

If a person has a taste, it is risky to surprise-gift them jewelry or anything more or less valuable. Unless you are very confident in own great taste or have a solid information from before, or present is very meaningful for yourself.
Probably depends on culture, but getting something not really useful/wanted may feel as a huge waste. Around our places person who does such gifts would be known as a.. not clever :3
Otherwise, sure. Creativity is rewarded, as well as other points which reveal that person making a gift actually cared to extent of ..thinking <3
