This exactly. If all else fail you can befriend them OR send them a message on steam also.
But do the befriending as a last option. Some people don't like invitations from strangers.

Gainja gave great advice for being able to personally thank people via their public giveaways.
And, if you're feeling generous, you can re-join Unlucky 7 as a gifter. I don't remember what the requirements are off the top of my head, but it's basically just giving away some games, and thus you could thus pay it forward. :)

I was going through my won games and remembered being horrible about thinking to actually say thank you even when I was so overly excited as a newer member. I went through and apologized to those I could but some I cannot see to check if I did because of leaving groups like Unlucky-7 over time, etc. So a quick belated thank you and apology to a few mysterious and generous folk. I really have won some great games and fun experiences through the site and that means a lot to me as an antisocial person struggling through depression.
Back to my thank you, I really appreciate you all and I'd like to thank the few I can't comment on here:
-Thanks to the person who gave me Endless Legend between 8-11 months ago. I appreciate it and sincerely hope I said so at the time. Very kind of you to give away.
-Thanks to the person who gave me Dead in Bermuda around a year ago. It was a blast to play and I know I'll revisit it sometimes the bad luck I would catch got too frustrating after awhile. But I've got a colony to save and zombies to shoot. :) For real. One of the most fun experiences I'd had gaming in quite awhile back then and helped me through a rough patch by making things enjoyable!
-Thanks to the person who gave me Plague Inc: Evolved over a year ago. All I have to say is this game is weirdly relaxing for how brutally violent it gets. Very fun game though. Has anyone tried the opposite one out, Pandemic?
-Thanks to the person who gave me Désiré over a year ago. I was so excited and forgot I never tried it. This is the reason I looked at the won games in the first place! Thank you. :)
-Thanks to the person who gave me Wasted over a year ago, around 18 months ago I believe. This was my first won game and I remember having a blast for several days playing it and getting slaughtered nearly every time. It's a bit quirky but I fell in love with it. <3 I'm pretty sure I thanked you back then but as I'm no longer a member of Unlucky-7 I can't be sure. Thank you, you are definitely the reason I stuck around and gave back 101 games total (even if several have lost their value over time.) :D
