Mabi at release, was one of my fav mmo's for a long time. Now its just a bunch of scammers/dupers very few people play legit. You can infact lvl through farming, alchemy or one of the other 100000 skills. mabinogi 2 is in development hopefully it will come out some time next yr. not likely though

Honestly, grinding is essential to the MMORPG genre ;)

Arma II (normal, free version; haven't ever tried DayZ) is as close as I've found to my ideal MMO, but it's not very RPGish.
Second Life (haven't played for years) would be close, but you still feel like you're grinding to get the in-game currency or items.
EVE that someone else suggested is probably pretty close too, but I'm betting that, like 2nd Life, you'll still feel like you're grinding.
Someone suggested Champions Online, and that was fun for a long time and didn't feel like grinding, but definitely could get a little boring as it's usually just fight things, get items, repeat; albeit with pretty decent storytelling and nice customizations.

That's like... An FPS about collecting spoons.. Doesn't exist.
It should, though.

Mmos are all about grinding... haven't you seen the format of every quest?
Deliver x to x location
Kill x monsters
Collect x items, etc

If the game description is to be believed The Secret World supposedly doesn't have levels and therefore (I guess) doesn't have grinding either... but quite honestly a game that requires buying AND then monthly subscription is a game that doesn't deserve players...

I haven't played the game, and don't know much about it, but removing a leveling system doesn't necessarily mean removing grind.
It could very easily be moved to grinding for currency or crafting materials as a way of character progression instead of just experience points.

It's a huge grind fest of absolute suckage though, there is a 'level' system if you will, its restricting as hell, because if you do whatever you want, you will literally be stuck in the noob area because you didn't specialize. It is such an atrocious game...pretty though, with interesting ideas, just the worst implementation you have ever seen.

I don't recommend this, personally. I used to play Ragnarok online, but once we got on private servers, the game instantly became boring and me and all of my friends quit.
Grinding exists in MMOs for a reason. Most suck without it. (Or with too much of it)

It's been years since i played RO, but I bet there are still some good private servers out there. There are a number of servers that have the experience and item drop ratios adjusted so that you still have to do a little bit of grinding if you want to get a rare item, but not to the extent that you want to smash your face into the monitor to make it stop. On the other hand, there are private servers that are absolute garbage, and you'll max out your exp and get game breaking items on the first kill; I suspect that's what made the game boring for dovecoon and friends. You can find a server with whatever ratio's you want, and most of the servers that I found my way towards had very friendly population, so don't let the idea of a private server turn you off. Ragnarok Online was an MMO gem, and still is.
dovecoon is right though, MMO's are grinding. What is it you want out of the game? I can't think of an MMO that ever lets you stop the grind. Even when you've got max gear or e-peen points or whatever system the game uses, and you've made it all the way to "end game content" you're still going to be grinding away in an arena, a raid, or pvp matches.
If you want an MMO without any grind whatsoever, I suggest this: http://www.kongregate.com/games/TerryCavanagh_B/chatchat

I'd say Champions Online. You do have those missions of defeat X amount of enemies here and there, and storyline missions have you facing the same enemies for a bit before moving on, but you can hit the cap doing solely missions and have more missions left over. The only problem I find with this game is there seems to be no true end game content.

Try playing a survival hunter in WoW, once you get the knack for it you can level from at least 15 to 60, I quit before I tried solo'ing some of the TBC dungeons. You'll still be killing monsters over and over, but it's very active since you're killing content designed for a group of five people your own level. Although I assume if you wanted to play WoW, you'd already have played it by now.
P.S. If you don't like dull grinding be thankful you weren't around for the EverQuest era huehuehue

part of an rpg is leveling, part of mmo's is repetition, so you are asking for something that can't exist... sorry to inform you of that

Is there a fun mmorpg that let's you level up by doing something other than dull grinding of the same monsters over and over again?
