It shows a blue circle at the bottom, and the translated text says install or meanwhile continue, but who knows what meanwhile is for them and if they are not going to pursue this by keep asking like they did with the windows 10 upgrade?

On a funny sidenote btw i read that in Armenia the majority there still uses Windows XP.

It's already nagging me. Fuck them, really. My biggest fear is I will misclick on installing one day

+1 to fear of misclick install.

This is why I make image backups of my entire boot SSD.

At least now AMD L3 Cache bug is now fixed so W11 won't hurt AMD CPU performance in most cases. It even provides a small FPS with some games at 1080p, as seen from Hardware Unboxed.

Answer: It's hard to say.
I think I saw somewhere that there are differences in upgrade methods and processes between countries and regions.

In addition, if your computer does not support Windows 11, you can use the "PC normality check application?" There is a suspicion that they use a whitelist system to determine the type of CPU, and sometimes I've seen stories of PCs that were deemed ready for Windows 11 that ended up in trouble.
(There have been cases where computers with CPUs that look like ancient fossils have been judged to be ready for installation.)

The rollout might also be different per country when they start.

I got a coffee lake processor so it's ready and i guess windows want it too, i clicked no for the time being, lets see how long it will last between the next time they ask.

Pretty sure the rollout is region based. I got my ready to go notification today and im not upgrading.i dont see any drivers came up on asus website other than armoury crate. Other than that, is there anything else that makes windows 11 not worth upgrading to?

yeah well, its not a big deal for me but im still hesitant because of asus not providing other drivers compatible to win 11 yet.. no idea if win 11 is supposed to auto download them on their own when installed?

If it is same as w10, it kept asking me till it decided one day update to w10 without my permission over night. Tbh, I don't even care about windows 11, cause soon or later there will be w12 lurking in system updates. I more hate how you now buy new computer and you get only advertisement for Microsoft office packs instead basic apps as excel, word and powerpoint.

"This PC doesn't currently meet all the system requirements for Windows 11" :).

Lucky me, no nagging or forced upgrade for me, I hope ;).

And I've already decided that with the next PC I will once again try to switch to Linux. Hopefully, with Proton around and seemingly going strong, this time it will work out for me.

That was the case with Wine for me. Even if they could be made to run, the process was often too much trouble for me. However it seems to be quite improved with Proton. It does seem to work well enough already and with Valve's continuous support I hope, that it will stay this way or even improve.

Though, as I've stated before, the surprising decision to launch Win 11 just a few years after repeating, that Win 10 is the last Windows (and too launch it in hurry, seemingly with some basic features missing) may mean, that they have done this for a sole purpose to implement some mechanics in OS foundations, which will make much harder to run programs developed for Win 11 on any other OS. The difference between threat level of open source Wine and Valve supported Proton is certainly very big for MS.

I have this sneaking suspicion you have never (or at least recently) used Linux before and are just talking nonsense you have seen people repeat on the internet.
Please educate yourself about the topic before you speak about it, because most games do indeed work on Linux :)

I have you blacklisted for months already so makes no difference to me lol

Nobody is forcing you or telling you to. I am just saying don't speak and be snarky about things you obviously don't know anything about especially when you are just plain wrong about it.

one more thing is that i don't really understand (i'll be honest) what that linked website really means

It tells you that about 78% of games work on Linux out of the box. It even nicely tells you right at the top that out of 20,5k tested games 17k work.

my pc is i press play/launch and it usually works

Same here :)

Have you considered that someone might do that because they are not interested entering/winning giveaways made by a specific person and blacklisting achieves the fact that they don't even show up for them? It is not all about preventing people from entering your giveaways you know.

Also it is kinda sad that the only thing you seem to care about is WL/BL and not the fact that you are straight up spreading misinformation.

This was maybe 10 years ago. I barely run into games that don't work recently. And I'm playing on Linux for 2 years now, even Blizzard games and GOG games too. Most of the people who say this either don't use Linux at all or haven't tried one for quite some time. Thanks to Valve, gaming on Linux made a huge jump 3 years ago and getting better everyday.

Of course it's a choice, I always tell people, use what's best suit for you. This doesn't change the fact that privacy-wise Windows getting worse on every release.

good glad you have it working well and maybe i should try it again but then again i won't be able to for a few years i guess - i buy a new machine only when my current one is un usable and broken

Again, what's best suits for you. If you like Linux, you'll find a way eventually anyway. :)
Operating systems are tools, but that doesn't give them the rights to spy on us. User should be in total control. For power users this is golden for Linux. Normal users don't care about control much but I bet they don't want their data to be used for advertisement either, a lot of people don't even know about this that Windows 10 (and 11) has telemetry keep sending user data to Microsoft, even share with third-party.

So, if a person only needs Windows for gaming, Linux can do the same job for them. At least we'll see an example for this with Steam Deck soon.

Why don't you try a dual boot installation using a Linux distro as main OS and Windows as fail safe?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

For 2 reasons:

  • doesn't work for me too well to work on 2 diff systems, when I constantly mix work and play activities, often a few times per hour;
  • I heavily customize my OS and it would be too much hassle to do this twice.

It seems not having a PC that can update to Windows 11 might be a positive. lol

My processor is like 6 months before the cutoff so it won't let me update. If I could have done it I would have, but I'm really glad that wasn't the case as over the past couple months I'm seeing things as why it's better to not upgrade yet.

In Argentina there are government computers are still started with a disk. I've personally fixed one that starts with a 5 1/4 one. The worst offender is one with Millenium, the owner says that he's comfortable with that and doesn't want to update. XP is too advanced for us.

Windows 10 will be only maintained from now on, so security patches only and that's it. No new features (like DirectStorage) and no real support when it comes to stability or compatibility. All new software will be developed with Windows 11 in mind, so expect potential problems. But I understand that people are happy with Windows 10. I'm a little hesitant myself, but I will upgrade sooner or later. Waiting for those AMD patches to be implemented fully.

If you are on the Pro version of windows, you can use group policies to completely disable windows update. Do note that I mean any kind of windows update, not just upgrading to windows 11.
I don't remember the exact policies (setting) to configure but a quick google search should be enough.

I haven't been nagged any yet, but I get the "Your PC does not meet the system requirements for Windows 11" box on the update screen. I'd say if you can disable that motherboard security thing that it requires, so your PC doesn't 'qualify' anymore, then you might not get nagged.

Win 11 says the only place for the task bar is at the bottom of the screen. Mine has been at the top for decades. XD
Seriously, though, it seems like MS alternates between good and bad Windows. Maybe we just need to pause updates until they come out with Win 12.

Not sure if someone mentioned this already, but you can stop Windows 10 from installing the update with the upgrade to W11 nag.
https://www.howtogeek.com/765377/how-to-block-the-windows-11-update-from-installing-on-windows-10/

I did it from the Group Policy editor, but that depends on the version of 10 you have. Hope it helps.
