What's up with those? They've been selling for higher prices lately. 201 sold yesterday for $1.51 o.O!

I bought x2 booster packs for $0.77 each a week ago. Received 6 cards and one duplicate. The price I could sell all of the cards exceeds $2 which is a good profit for me. However, I decided I should craft instead and received a background worth $3

I think it might have something to do with the recent holding change for the Market?
(15 days now I think)

I pretty much guarantee that is it. Just look at card prices for new games, they stay decently high far longer than before. Before the hold started the prices dropped to 3-5 cents a pop within the first day or two, now there are games that added cards around the time the hold started and the prices are still the same as the day the hold went into effect.

But tbh, i have a feeling the price for absolutely everything on the market will crash like a 10 ton brick in the ocean once the first 15 days is up due to people pricing low so they don't have to deal with yet another 15 day hold once the stuff finally gets through and they have to take it down and readjust.

Damn that is more then a TOD

i am not sure a price hike would make sense if they removed things that could be sold or traded...

Maybe this is replacing the use of keys for stuff that is not worth using a whole key on but more then a TOD?

Edit: or like the person above me mentioned maybe has to do with trade hold but still i do not see how it would given the way i understand it anything not used with mobile has 15 days.I could see if this had no hold that it would make it worth more

Also i would not buy more of those in hope to sell even higher unless your willing to risk it crashing as whatever is driving up the price might not last.Usually not a wise idea to buy stuff from the market and try sell higher and sell later as prices can change daily and crash hard.

I beleive the prices are rising not because of the trade hold, but rather the winter sale approaching. People are selling now for good prices and buying them later for lower prices. In December 12 2015 over 2 million sacks were sold for $0.11. Imagine buying 100 back then? It's only $11(I would have given it a shot myself if I had the money). And then sell them for $0.6(without fees), that's $60. You made $49 profit.

Well what happen in Dec. they had market issues which caused those cheap prices. If i remember right Valve even put a stop to listing them and buying them.It was a mess.It is not even June though so i still find it weird to raise prices this early as who would buy for higher months in advance.I can see a week or two ahead of a sale so they have them ready.Though a lot claim trading is dead because of the mobile and trade holds lol. Most trades happen with Keys not sack of Gems.

Either way i will never buy Gems for trading, there is no way i will buy something that was crafted from trinkets people got for free crafting badges to just mark up the price way above and making gems worthless for booster pack crafting.

Not sure what happened , and why there was such a massive spike in price .
Stuff seems to be normal now .

Still tho , its unreasonable for it to be more then ~0.80 tbh .
You can get 10 profile backgrounds for 0.06/7 and break them into 100 gems each = a sack ...
after the tax and stuff you can still sell them for profit even @ 0.81+

Nope. They are almost at the same price as before. I remember them to be around 71 cents in the past, now they're 78 cents (I'm talking about euros). If you intend to sell them in a year and gain a profit of about 10 cents each, you can risk it. xD Keep in mind though that every marketable item's market price drops during sales.

Check its graph. 208 sacks were sold for $1.5 a day ago. And 2 million sacks were sold for $0.11 in December 2015

These are just peaks. Unlegit peaks. :P Probably a person that bought massively? Or someone that bought expensive sack of gems from someone in the market, in order to make a deal.

Someone bought massice amounts might be the case, but someone buying expensive packs from someone else wouldn't work.

It would, if you would find the exact guy you're looking for. Hmmm, but at the page of the sack of gems, there's no option to find the specific person you want to buy from. You can do this when buying other items though. These peaks are unlegit though. I was always thinking that a steam support guy was buying massive amounts of gems, in order to keep its price steady, because sack of gems is one of the few items that has a steady price on steam. When they were being sold for 3 cents in the market, they withdrew them from the market, and then they came back with a steady price. How's that possible? :/

Yeah I know. People paying each others through wallet usually do so with Dota2, CS:GO or TF2 Items. As they are still using the old market system.

some idiot put wrong price, you can buy @ $15 if you want w/o buying out cheaper offers

If you put $15. Steam will buy the first one it finds even if it isn't $15. The price you put is the highest price you want to pay.

it's true, if you place a bid @ $15 you will buy the cheapest item on the list but you have to pay $15

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

no, you will buy first item EVER that had been listed for @15, then 2nd, till your order is cleared, a minute ago someone sold 1 or more sacks for 0,14 euro, I saw that buy searching for item gems and it stated "sacks of gems starting @ 0,14"

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

If you put 15 and there was an item for 14, you'll pay 14 not 15. The system uses FIFO

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't know if it's a bug or not, but it happened to me twice. If you put 15 and there's an item @ 14 you will buy that item, but you'll pay 15, and the seller receive 15 (minus the fee).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That's probably a bug and you should report it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Do you have a source? I was pretty certain the system used random selection (FIFO would be better IMO).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's not random selection. It's more or less a modified FIFO system. Take for an example an item with the following sell prices:

  1. 105 for $1
  2. 205 for $3
  3. 102 for $5.2

If you put your buy order at $2.9, you will get the first sell order at $1. If you put your buy order at $4.08 you will get the first sell order at $3 and so on. No matter what buy order you put, the system will give you the closet one to it AND less than it.
SellOrder One<= Your Buy Order <= SellOrder Two.

It seems like everyone still prices in keys, tods, scraps, and cards.

Some people on trades usualy count 3xSog = 1 Key , and ye i've seen quite few that use it on trades.

I know I might sound silly, but some people exploit the market this way to transfer Steam wallet money between accounts.

Permalink

The only thing I know possible is to trade wallet between people, I do that but I only use micro transacted Valve games as they still use the old system.

What luoq said... not sure what method is used, bots or something, but this has been going on for quite awhile and Valve wipes the price history of these anomalies regularly...so it's super fishy all around.

Well actually the supply is steadily dropping and demand is only increased. It's at 8k being sold right now and 46k buy orders. They need to infuse more gems into the supply chain; backgrounds and emotes being broken down doesn't cut it in my opinion.
