Should I start with the first one, or can I skip it and play the second game, right away?
You can start with second one, but you'll probably get more out of it if you play the first one first.

Fuck you. Graphics are fine. Download this: http://www.moddb.com/mods/the-sith-lords-restored-content-mod-tslrcm
and play the first game before. It is way better.

I hate it how people only think about graphics especially when you are going to play an RPG as good as kotor.

It's a classic. Better to get the full experience by playing it as it was. :)

Well, just saw the comment below about a widescreen mod. Yeah, I would go with that. Playing with two black vertical lines on your screen ... it won't kill you, but it probably would annoy you to no end. Definitely makes me feel claustrophobic.

You're really desperate for a vacation aren't you?

Hey man, let me recommend you a good therapist. He or she can help you sort out these layers upon layers of anger you're holding inside. No need to live life so angry. We all deserve happiness, as long as our happiness doesn't hurt others.

Sorry, I played back when it first released, so I'm not up-to-date on what mods are available.

You probably should start with 1, at least so 2nd won't spoil some stuff in 1st.
And 2nd has bunch of upgrades that might annoy you when you'll see they are not in first game.
Somewhat Must-Have for 2nd: http://deadlystream.com/forum/files/file/398-tslrcm-183b/

I played the second one first. I fell in love with the game and the story so I searched for the first one. Because I played the second one first, I wasn't as blown away by the first one. Popular opinion is that the first one is the better game. So take that as you will.
Though many fans agree that had KOTOR 2 had more time to be finished, it would have been great. But seconding Brokkolimann, you should definitely download the Restored Content mod at some point. Though maybe on a second playthrough so you can see what exactly was left out of the game (?).
But umm, yeah. To answer your question - probably best to start with the first one. There quite a few references to the first game in the second one, so yeah.

IMO first one only is called better because of two things, one being one dialog and other being finished when released.
KotOR 2 has tons of improvements (like influence system, better upgrades system). And it has Kreia, such a great old hag that can really demythologize your whole Star Wars mindset.

You might want to use widescreen mod with the first one. And and at least the Sith Lords restored with the 2nd one. I played without it and I regret it now :(
I played the 2nd first and never got into the first...

Start with the first one, or you'll miss most of the backstory for the second.

Play the first one and then the second one. There's a lot of backstory that you will miss out on, some awesome characters and you won't understand most of the talk related to previous events and characters either. Plus story-wise, while i don't share the view of a certain part of the KOTOR fanbase that KOTOR 2 is bad, i'd say the first one is superior in terms of story and, in my opinion most of the characters as well..

Allow me to disagree with you, I personally think that kotor2 has much better story since kotor1's plot is too typical for SW game. Even when kotor2 is not as polished as the first part.

Yes however i would argue that Kotor 1's story, tho typical, or hell, let's call it what it is, cliche, has that epic journey feel that i always felt Kotor 2 was missing. I also always felt that the characters were simply not as memorable and likable as the ones in the first game. Not to mention that fact that i could never stand Kreia, she was, in my opinion, a very weak villain overall. Don't get me wrong, i love both games equally and i replay them both every couple of years but that will never stop me from seeing their flaws.

While I do find the second one to be better than the first (with the fan restoration mod), I share the sentiment of the previous posters, play them in order. Also, when you get to the sewers in the first game, don't give up. That part is terrible, but the game gets so much better afterwards.

Oh god yes, no matter how many times i replay the game i still can't stand that part of the game and always rush through it as fast as possible, The story itself for that part is interesting but the level itself is beyond annoying and feels very poorly thought out compared to the rest of the game..

I actually never played the first one (although I now own it on Steam), but have finished the second one at least 5 or 6 times. You might miss a few things (some important, some not) but if you replay once or twice or look for that particular missing info you will be fine. Great game btw. No, not great, brilliant -slash- excellent.

Look at my profile. I'm currently playing the first one. No regrets.Graphic is still okay, the only problem is the resolution. But there are fixes for it.

You should really start with kotor1. And after kotor1 and before kotor2 you should read wookiepedia or something to learn what exactly happened with protagonist of kotor1 since you won't be playing as him/her in kotor2
Also, in kotor2 you'll be able to choose who was the protagonist of the 1st part (male/female, jedi or sith) and what his/her lightsaber was.
The guy who beat kotor1 5 times, kotor2 4 times

In kotor1 you can choose your first (non-jedi) class in the beginning of the game, then you can choose your additional jedi class after you escape Taris.
Be awared that you can only reach maximum level 20 combined of both classes: if you will be lvl 9 after Taris, you will only be able to become lvl 11 jedi after that.
So don't level up more than lvl 6-7 (or better lvl 5) on Taris, you'll need those lvl ups for jedi-only abilities.

I had the same problem, under SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\swkotor
you can open the config.exe there. Disable video and choose a correct resolution for your monitor (1024*768 for me). it should start then.

I played the 2nd one first, I was so lost and confused. I still enjoyed it though.

Is it highly recommended to start with the first one?
