Does it mean anything more to humanity than an astronomical phenomenon?

What I fear more than conspiracy theories is "religious fundamentalism," "money worship," and "lust for power," which I cannot elaborate on given the SG guidelines because such people are more likely to eradicate humanity.๐
Well, it bothers me that if people don't correct what needs to be corrected when it needs to be corrected, things will come at them like snowballs rolling down a slope. I hear that eclipses are a big deal when it comes to fortune telling and other things that people love to do.๐ค๐ฎooO(๐ฅ)

lol. add that to the quakes mtg is talking about. thats right, not only did we steal the election, we stole the sun!

It's an incident from a past eclipse.๐
Some people look through CD-ROMs, but don't do that either, as it will damage your eyes.
If your eyes hurt after watching the solar eclipse, here's what you need to know

i wonder how many 911 calls will pop up during eclipse with eye problems
Comment has been collapsed.
Yup. Because it's darker so your pupils open more allowing more light in and burning further back into your eye, meanwhile you can look at the sun directly for longer so this burning lasts longer. Your eyes also don't have nerve endings so it can't feel the damage happening. Finally, these effects don't always set in right away, they can take up to like 12 hours so you don't know that you damaged your eyes until way later.
Interestingly tho, it's totally fine to look at the sun without glasses during totality.

Yeah I had to look it up bc we're always told it's so dangerous but not why

We had one a few years ago, it's an akward thing, the whold world stands still for a brief moment, the darkness, birds and animals become totally silent before that, they feel something is going to happen. I wouldn't mind having it yearly, and i don't believe i am going to experience another one in my lifetime where i live.

The eclipse
๐Ah, you used to talk about this.(9 year ago)
Hope the security and economy improves so much that we can at least see the eclipse whenever we move around the globe.
I think everyone should experience this at least once. ๐ซ๐๐ฅ๐ด๐๐ฆ

I don't even remember that, i even seemed to have adviced to not use cdroms. ๐

The environmental parties in many countries are trying to cut down on plane rides, like in the netherlands they closed down one airport and the other major one (schiphol) also had to cut down on incoming flights (we are kinda a passway through other countries).
I would not be surprised some day it will only be available for the rich and privilged people, like when it started.

If people want things to change, though, now is the time to do so.
I just hope that the state of affairs, where greedy people have it all to themselves, doesn't get worse.๐ค๐๐
Well, more and more people are like plants with roots growing out of their chairs if you look on the internet.
I wonder if we will soon have people who have vegetables growing out of their bodies....๐ฑใ๐๐ฉโ๐พ๐ฝ๐ฅ๐๐ง๐จโ๐พ๐ง
If I don't make a conscious effort to get out of the house for about 30 minutes a day, I will soon be turned into a generator in the Matrix world pod.

The first thing I thought about is all the people that think they won't need "special glasses" to see the eclipse

Yes, it absolutely and objectively means more then just an astronomical phenomenon.
And i dont mean any conspiracies or spiritual beliefs- the moment all civilizations through history gave it meaning then yes, it does have meaning for us as a species. Even at a individual level, like some nostalgic good memory with your family seeing one for the first time.
Even our mythology wich everyone agrees is fantasy have meaning, so deep their stories are timeless and we never tire of revisiting then.
Meaning is human. Is something our human minds try to project in the world and in ourselves to make sense of this strange world we live in and our very lives. No microscope can show it, no math. We cant find it ourselves in nature anywhere except the meaning we put there.
To me personally it have little meaning but does have some- it makes me once again be in awe at how amazing nature is. Reminds me of how small we are, and therefore most of the things we bother with- nothing is as serious or big as we imagine, not in the big scheme of things. That is some meaning too.
But even if it doesnt have a special meaning to me... to us? Humanity? Hell yeah! Otherwise we wouldnt even be bothering flooding the news and people flooding the towns where it will pass, or people making crazy stories about it. Yeah, 100% it means something more to humanity, always have.
For all the crazy stuff some people throw out there im happy at least in this age it doesn mean 'world is ending' or the perfect time for human sacrifice. We progressed!

It seems that frequently in the past, when the end of the century came, there were human beings who exploited money, goods, labor and life, claiming that it was the end of the world.
I'm glad to see such events decreasing.๐
It is wonderful to share a couple of events in one's lifetime with good friends and to be able to enjoy them and return home safely.

I may never see a total eclipse (the next total solar visible from France will be 2081 and I'll be a human popsicle on a spaceship on my way to Proxima Centauri by then) and it kind of bums me that I wanted to go back home (to Canada) around this time but wasn't able to make it happen but it's pretty cool to be able to have live streams and other scientifically minded coverage about it.
There's an almost total one in Europe in August 2026 so I'll probably catch this one but it's not the same as a full eclipse.

Well, it seems that the next one will be observable in South America in about October 2025.

That is so cool! There might be shopping malls on the moon by 2082 anyway so we probably need to go there before that.

Yeah 2081 seems very far considering how we are messing things up now.
