Little story:

So i bought about 10 keys for CS:GO a few months ago. I won a few common guns, and.. a 'special rare' item. Which was a Flip Knife Night. I never really understood the value of it. Did not even realize you could sell it. I recently got bored of CS:GO after completed all achievements, so i decided to sell up. I put this flip knife on the market for 100$ not believing anyone would actually buy it.. TEN MINUTES later, i have 100$ in steam wallet. It's laughable. I spend about 15£ originally, on boxes.. and i thought that was being stupid - buy 100$ on a single weapon.. jesus.

Not that i'm complaining, i bought the new COD and some other stuff.

I don't get it either. But what is a complete waste of money to me may not be to someone else I guess.

The last sentence in this dota 2 article killed me :
"In 2010 Entropia Universe player Jon Jacobs sold a virtual space station for $635,000."

1: Right now the cheapest ★ Flip Knife | Night on the market is selling for $118. You probably could have gotten more. :P
2: You probably could have sold it for keys and bought games cheaper from trusted resellers.
3: People want what others have, and have disposable income with which to buy it. Do I think it's silly? Of course I do, but honestly that sort of demand and hype is what keeps games like TF2 alive and able to use a free-to-play model.

As someone who played a lot of the original Team Fortress for Quake 1 and loved it, I think it's exactly what makes TF2 pure crap and a bastardization of what once a great game. But to each their own.

I can't deny it's success, but to me it's simply because they have catered to the lowest common denominator, which I find really sad and unfortunate.

Because they can afford it and feel like it?

Moreover, I find really laughable that you spent some of that money to buy the "new" COD, but I never complained in a thread.

Their money, their choice.

I find it utterly stupid too, but I have already made around 6 euros by selling Winter offensive chests and I like it. I have also bought some stuff with this money during the sale and I am cool with it.

Same reason you have to wonder why someone would pay six figures for a Volkswagen bus that they made like 400,000 of. It happens, though. Pretty frequently.

When scarcity (real or perceived) meets demand meets impulse.

I wouldn't buy a house because it usually means going into debt and thus becoming some sort of a slave. Car is the same thing, just not so bad and it is actually very cool to have your own car. And alcohol... Well, if you do not refrain from drinking at all(which I find weird) you're better off drinking expensive alcohol, since it is much better both in terms of fun and your health.

alchohol no matter is quality is not good for your health, your liver and kidneys will give up if pickled in 35 year old scotch just the same as if you drink guiness

alcohol in small amounts is said to be beneficial. For a healthy individual, a few beers or drinks a week has no negative affect on a the body.

Although, if you want to get technical, everything we do is damaging our bodies. Breathing, movement in any form, using things like lotions and scrubs, eating and drinking most foods damages our stomach lining and esaphages to a minor extent.

How about if I take your hobby or something you like and collect and call it silly? Or you think certain hobbies are superior to others? Or even that some people who has the money to spend, spend it.

Since that money is in your Steam wallet you will buy a collection of pixels called games with that money you got from selling that item.

Collecting things is a hobby to people, just like playing games, or hiking, or collecting cards or stamps. Rip on a guy for buying a knife that he prob resold in the market for a profit while you went and bought the newest and WORST CoD. la de freaking da.

Because the only difference between monopoly money and real money is people agreeing that real money has value. The same can be said about pixels.
