How hard would it be for the site admins to create a steam account used for syncing profile data?

That way we can simply friend the "SteamGifts" user and leave our profiles as "friends only" or "friends of friends".

This would prevent users from having to manually resync every few days, and probably clear 80% of the help requests out of the forum.

There's a lot of problems with that.

That friend list would become full quick. Also i think that wouldn't work anyway.

Actually, the only trouble and complaints we've had on public profiles being required to sync have been users who already had their profile public but since steamcommunity was having issues, syncing wouldn't work properly.

This wouldn't clear 80% of the help requests.

That answers that.
Thanks for the quick reply.

Whenever I want to sync manually (because of new game I've got and want them filtered automatically or joined a new group) I often have to try multiple times before it actually works. Can very well be due to steamcommunity of course but it's still annoying. Not much that can be done on SG's side of course of it'S the community acting up.

That would just make evrerything more complicated and it isn't even possible to get the the infos from friends with the Steam API. And you don't need to manually resync, it does that automatic.

not if your Steam profile isn't public though, which a lot of people's aren't. I have mine set to "Users Only", and the setting is only that lax because I've been doing some trading, otherwise it would be "Friends Only".

AFAIK you are forced to sync from time to time to keep the account valid.

yes of course. it's like once a week or thereabouts. i just meant that it's not automatic for many people such as myself who are not going to compromise on privacy/security, so we have to do it manually

There is no other way than to do it manually, it just isn't technically possible to do it like this.

Every few days I have to switch my profile to public, resync, and then set my profile back to "friends only".

Thanks to a crazy ex, I do not feel comfortable leaving the profile public.

It's a minor annoyance, but still an annoyance.

What can someone possibly do to you by seeing your gaming backlog?

Only bad thing is people who use the join game option, or perhaps you wanna hide your negligence from others (like with group projects and such where you just feel like taking a break every so often and people get all judgemental), but other than that I don't see an issue

The gaming backlog isn't a big deal, it's the "last online" info that has caused me problems.

I had an Ex girlfriend that would show up at my house when she knew I was home, or show up at my work 15 minutes after I arrived. (I worked an odd schedule)

Once she decided to show up at my house right after I left for work to harass my current girlfriend, and at one point she stole my dog.

There's a LOT you can do when you know someone is at their computer....

it's not just that, he might have other content on his profile that he doesn't want someone snooping in on. comments and/or discussions immediately comes to mind. also if you don't want someone to see who you are friends with (cuz it's none of their business)

I know it's a simple thing, but I was trying to find a technical solution to a minor irritant.

Having your access to the site blocked (including forums, messages, and "did I win" checking) because your profile is private is a bit excessive in my opinion.

Additionally, there are times when I would like to look at this site without having to log into steam and make changes (like when I have 2 minutes of downtime at work).

That's actually a great point. +1

Maybe you should just not be allowed to enter giveaways without syncing. At least the rest of the site would still be usable.
