After i installed a ssd today, with a new windows. I ran into this problem..

My fans are normaly running so i can hear them. But just now this happened, they or only 1 fan turned off, while pc was on..

Pc was working just fine but my fan(s) were not making any spinning noise.. What fan or fans could that be and why do they turn off ? Maybe i damaged something ?? Anyone of you guys had this before ?

I turn on SpeedFan program and fans start to spin again and i can hear it.. otherwise its dead silent inside the case

thx

After installing SSD your fans stopped spinning!?
That's unusual, however my guess is that you did something wrong with drivers / bios?
Did you install every driver needed? Did you flash/update your bios before and when was it?

I think i didnt install all drivers needed. Im very confused when it comes to drivers that are not GPU drivers..

Ok. How do i find a right driver for my BIOS ? I see this now in msinfo32. : BIOS Version/Date American Megatrends Inc. 6.16, 2011-03-18

Look up your mainboard model @ your brand's website.
Shouldn't really be drivers or any other software normally though.

I'm pretty sure it is software/driver related. For all fans to just stop. then they start again when he starts up speedfan...

When did you buy your motherboard and what brand and type is it? Seems like the drivers are from 2011, which might be outdated. However the fans did work before so the chance that is the problem is quite small and I would wait and check some other possible solutions first if I were you.

Might be better off going to the source than to the distro/builder, they tend to update late if at all :s

It should say on the Mobo though normally.

I had this psu for a month now and this didnt happen until today i got a ssd and a new windows.. Its a 700W, And recomended for my system is about 500.

I upgraded my pc with a gpu and psu about a month ago and had no problems.

That information could be useful, however a SSD doesn't really need more than 3W.

SSD is connectet with a sata cable from psu and a old sata data cable that goes into mainboard.
Mayb that old cable could be the prob..

No. The SSD just wouldn't work if the cable is broken.

Should be easy enough to find which fans are running or not if you open the case up..
Casefan connectors especially are a bit wobbly, PSU you normally don't hear at all (it's tend to be broken if you do), GPU you will only hear under load apart from maybe a soft hum; same for any decent non-silent CPU fans and casefans. Casefans are the loudest of the bunch normally though.

could it be the noise you heard before was your standard hdd spinning?
and now with ssd drive as new main one there is just not any noise because ssd is much more quiet than normal hdd.

also just open your case while pc is running and watch your fans if all are spinning (CPU,GPU,PSU and case fans if there are any)
If there really is a fan not working it should be easy to see which one is it.
Before you install anything or change some random drivers, check before which fan is the one which make troubles if at all.

HDD's shouldn't make so much noise. It's indeed smart to check which are spinning and which aren't.

I have a seagate 750GB as second HDD and I clearly hear when the HDD is starting to spinn ( I guess its in some kind of sleep mode while not being used)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Not really sleep mode, but more idling. I've heard of HDD's which go from 7200RPM to 5400RPM when idling. However I have two 3TB 7200RPM HDD's which are absolutely silent for me while the case isn't even standing more then 30cm from me. (Older hard drives tend to vibrate when spinning which can cause some noise)

That only means your computer is too loud for you to hear the hard drives.

My pc is dead silent. Don't hear a thing. I use Watercooling and Corsair Air Series SP120mm Quiet fans :P

Then you need to check your hearing, and I'm dead serious about that.

I have sound dampening in the case (which is below my desk), three fans that spin at about 500 rpm, and my two single-platter drives are easily audible.

Could be me ofcourse :3 can't be to bothered to check though.

You could always set up a very short spindown period and see if you can hear any difference when the drives spin down. If you can't, then something's wrong, or your fans are loud enough to mask the noise. In general, a 120mm fan will become audible in a closed case at about 600 rpm. It's very audible at 800 rpm, and loud at 1000.

I opened the case and checked my fans after that noise just happened again, but they were all spinning, maybe they slow down or something ??

Some HDD's are noisy and it could be that. However, I'd reopen the case and check that all cables are firmly plugged in. Maybe the case fan got knocked out (they can come out easily.) I'd definitely check the one on your CPU if you have a fan for it.

The only thing i can tell from my hdd is that it does make those little clicking noises when i fire up some big software like steam or skype, but the sound that comes randomly and it becomse dead silent is the same sound that you would hear if you would turn ur pc of by holding the on/off button for few seconds on your case, thats the same noise i hear but my pc keeps running just fine, it doesnt turn off !

GUYSS It just happened again, i heard that noise when fans make if they stop spinning. I opened the case and BAM, all 4 fans are actualy spinning, but i cant hear the noise fans make when they are spinning, that noise just dissapeared !! I turned off my pc and when it booted back up the noise was back and i can hear it now. will post a pic in a min. http://imgur.com/hvcgxPD
PSU, GPU and those 2 fans were spinning after noise dissapeared. SO its not fan problem ?

Did you check the fans of your graphics card? some GFX's can get very noisy.

Yes its def not my gpu, gpu fans sound very different, i tried setting them to 100% and it was completely different noise
And yes they were spinning.

MSI does build decent coolers, so I was sure it couldn't be the Graphics card (Btw GPU is something different then GFX / Graphic card).
But it's always smart to check everything ;)

GUYS I THINK I SOLVED THIS, JUST NEED CONFIRMATION PLEASE..

I turned off my pc and removed all cables going to hdd, basicly i turned it off. And now my pc is very very silent i can barely hear anything, cant even hear fans spin, so that wasnt fan fault, fans just make no noise at all lol. It was hdd that was making those loud noises so thank you for you help, this is a great community and ill make a giveaway soon :P

All my tempratures in Speedfan are marked with Blue so they are not overheating or anything, its very unusual having not to hear no sound at all comming out from my pc..

pc is probably about 3 years old, and so is the hdd that was in it, do you think it ''wear out'' ? Do modern hdd make no sound at all ?
This is the one i have

Size: 1.5 TB
Interface: SATA
Rotational Speed: 7200 RPM

Modern HDD's do make sound and yes they do make more noise the older they get.
But things like clicking isn't something you are supposed to hear from a HDD, though.

Worst condition would be: Platter of HDD is vibrating a little when spinning. This may damage your HDD, but I can't say for sure since I'm not the one hearing or seeing it.

It indeed made alot of clicking noises when i did something with my pc like opening a game or something like that, but the performance always stayed the same. Now when i removed it, pc is so quiet it almost feels like its going to explode any second lol !! ITS TOO QUIET

Btw kyran, something i always wondered, do you think its better if i leave my side panel open ? My pc is on the desk and not on the ground. Maybe that way there would be less dust ? Or maybe more

no this is worse since it would disturb the air flow of your case, at least if its a decent one.
And I'm glad i was right with my guess thats its the HDD, at least nothing damaged on your pc. :)

Can you describe the clicking sound a bit more? I've heard a laptop charger make a squeaking sound like a mouse so computers can make some odd sounds. If your HDD isn't doing much you might not hear anything, but other times it might make a few sounds. Also, how loud are the clicking sounds? If they're like REALLY loud you should leave your PC off for a bit until you get it sorted out. And as for the side panel question, you might get a bit more dust in there with it off but I interned in a computer repair store for a little while and the 2 desktop PC's that they had there didn't have a side panel on. Granted, they aren't gaming PC's but I don't think they'd leave the side panels off it was going to be really bad for it. I leave mine on because I don't see much point in leaving it off.

im gonna try to search a video with same sound i hear. first video i can show is that i am NOT hearing a clicks like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwYSdD4fyRU, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nr-RsGX6Ywk < These are NOT the clicks i am hearing, i am hearing more of a lets take a very old pc and if u start loading a program, u will hear some clicking noises and stuff, but they are super fast clicks are doesnt sound like anything that is in this video.

this is the closest video what i have found - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7uoUau7qkI
But my noises are much more slower and there are less of those beeps...

i just dont know how to describe...........

Which brand is it? At least Seagate drives have a clicking sound when the drive head parks and then starts again. The drive parking can be disabled with hdparm.

While PC might be working normally, it could be that your components might not get sufficient cooling.
The case is designed to move air through the front, past the hot components and out the back (generally).
Leaving the side panel off could cause areas within the case to not get enough air to keep them cool.
Air is going to take the path of least resistance and just blow out the side, less will run past the stuff that needs to dissipate heat.
