1.When you join the site, you should be redirected to the rules.

2.The rules shouldn’t be hidden in the forum (which is OHMO only visited by about 1/10 of users) or the FAQ (where people only go when in trouble)

3.There should be a sticky with a list of forbidden games.

3.Same list should be at the “create giveaway” page.

4.You shouldn’t be able to create a giveaway of a forbidden game at all, or at least you should get a big red pop-up that says “don’t”.

5.The mods should be able to ban users for 24 hours/48 hours/7 days/30 days. Sometimes permaban is just too much.

I'm trying to be constructive and helpful, so please don't hate me Ellendi.:-P

  1. cg already said that he's changing it so that you are redirected to the rules when registering.

  2. FAQ is in the footer of the front page and the forum.

  3. There was a sticky of forbidden games, but people complained about the amount of stickies. We've been updating the FAQ, but the forbidden games are in there.

  4. Most of those "forbidden" giveaways are removed from the dropdown, but when it's the same game (D&D:DM MP and SP), we shouldn't remove the single player from the dropdown just because the MP is not allowed.

  5. I agree, actually.

I think for Dark Messiah, they should make two selections: "Dark Messiah Might and Magic" and "Dark Messiah Might and Magic Multi-Player", When choosing the first one, they can create the giveaway, when choosing Multi-Player, it redirects you to FAQ exploited keys section

Then they just re-submit it as single.

I don't know if they will or not, but I think that should reduce some amount of MP key submission.

FAQ is in the footer of the front page and the forum.

I still see the same problems (that are being pointed out repeatedly): "FAQ", "footer", "forum". The majority of people:

...don't read footers. Especially not when the most important link is between "Privacy Policy" and "E-mail Us".

...don't read FAQ. Not unless they are very thorough, experienced or bored, or unless they are having some problems working with the site. That's because if you don't have a question, you rarely want to browse through answers to other people's questions.

...don't read forums. Not unless they want to chat. (Which the majority does not, judging from the number of registered users and the number of people in the forum.)

So yep, forcibly redirecting to the rules page could help. But simply having the rules somewhere is just a part of the solution. (Reminds me of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and the plans for demolition of Earth, which were freely available in the local planning department at Alpha Centauri. :-))

Agreed, the footer is oft ignored by me and I assume most users. It's good that the FAQ is linked to on every page, but it might help if it were in the header instead.

That is exactly what I had in mind, thank you for your exhausting explanation Chuckie.:-)

There used to be more stickies re: certain rules, but that ended up getting a little confusing which is why they've all been consolidated into the FAQ. I think the FAQ works well when people read it, but it doesn't get nearly as much notice from new users as I wish it would so I like the suggestion of being redirected there upon joining the site. Maybe it could be an extra bit of TOS check box type thing when joining, I don't know. I think the FAQ probably has more evolution to go through as well, so that makes it tricky.

I agree if there are forbidden games then they shouldn't be able to be given away. It's tricky with stuff like Dark Messiah, because you can genuinely give the full game away- it's just the MP keys that are not allowed. But things that will result in immediate deletion and banning (not sure if there are anymore) just seem weird that there is even an option to submit.

Good suggestions :) I'm all about avoiding madness.

Here's one suggestion to address the Humble Bundle issue

Temporarily add a note at the very beginning of the Create Gift page during any Humble Bundle period. Giving a CLEAR INDICATION of the Humble Bundle Policy. Something like

DO NOT POST CURRENT HUMBLE BUNDLE GAMES! IF YOU GOT A GAME VIA THE HUMBLE BUNDLE DO NOT POST IT!

At least this way during the giveaway period, you can't say "I didn't know" or some other excuse. It's on the creation page which should make people pause. I'm not sure how feasible this is but it seems easy enough assuming you just change the css a bit. It would also ensure that when games get added, like SpaceChem did recently, people will see this and 'hopefully' think twice about posting even before the admins remove the game from the list pulldown.
