Find it a bit hefty price, for some very minor graphic updates and a bunch of options basically being cheats.

Considering that the original currently sells for $12 I don't think $20 for a remastered version is unreasonable. It's not like this is an obscure series or a game people don't like on average. There's probably at least a few new easter eggs or bonus things aside from the cheat codes.
As for me I still have my original PS1 disks and I've played through the game at least a half dozen times already, so I won't be picking this up.

Compared to Russian prices, which are already as skewed as possible. -65% from the original price for a region who earns around 10-20% less than the average region in the area where people pay the original price. Seems more like you got an extremely generous deal ($4.20 base price...) and now you've adjusted your standards to that.
Perhaps I'm missing something here.
Also, rounding up 3.5x to 4.0x is a bit dishonest here. :D

Not sure where you get your numbers. Region that earns around 10-20% less than the average region where people pay the original price? The net average monthly wage in Russia is $560 (€506). The lowest net average monthly wage in EU country, according to wiki, is €765 (Hungary). The net average for EU as a whole is slightly above €2000 I believe. Not even gonna mention the USA, Canada etc. How's that 10-20%?
So, for an average Russian person $4.20 for a 20-year old game is just fine. For a remaster (not a remake) of said game... well, let's say around $8 would be fine I guess. Definitely not $15. $15 is what the basic The Witcher 3 used to cost in Russia upon release iirc. $18 now.
And ok, I'll correct myself, the remaster price in Russia is 3.603896103896104 times higher than the original. :D

Albania doesn't exist in Europe now. Noted. :P
In Europe, the median average (if we're actually going that way, not with population medians, which would actually work against you) is around 890€. So yeah, you're right if we're going that route, that it's not 20%. Instead it's 40% less. So why are your prices at -78% the fairer ones? Am I missing something? The disparaty of 200% seems a bit more than just a "whoops".
We can go based on population and see even less pleasant differences.
Mind you, I'm happy ya'll got a cheaper product. I'm just finding it a bit weird to compare an already "unfair" price to something that balances the scales a bit more.
Best solution would be to just reduce all prices imo. Would make it easier on me :D

EU = European Union. Albania is not a member yet as far as I'm aware. But yeah, made a mistake here anyway as I thought for some reason that non-EU members are paying reduced prices. Turned out they're paying the same as EU members with a couple exceptions. My bad.
Anyway...it's not that I disagree with game pricing in general. It's this particular game I have an issue with. I already bought a physical copy of FFVIII back in 2003 or so, then bought it at steam again as that old copy refused to work properly on newer systems, so no way I'm paying that much to buy the essentially same game (even if it's called a 'remaster' the changes aren't really any significant, and some features are even removed compared to the original) for the third time. I can, but I won't.

No worries. It shows less that you made a mistake and more that the games industry has a really skewed idea of regions.

And that's a totally reasonable notion. But as of now this doesn't look like just adding higher resolution support like with the Sniper Elite V2 Remastered (which literally even cost 35€ or 10€ for previous owners) while that support already existed in the original game and while also writing articles that literally lied.
But maybe that's a low bar.
Just that it looks like this will be a remaster with actual effort put into it. It's a remaster, not a remake, after all.
Vote with your wallet.

thanks for the heads up, yeah they're kinda obsessed with the cheats ahah they did the same for every Steam game.. ff7 x and all the other ones had the esc menu "cheats".. anyways I'm in, no matter what when it's about final fantasy..

Same price as on steam?

I'll be honest, the graphical updates seem pretty major to me. No more 144p backgrounds from what I can see, which basically immediately means that around 90% of the visuals were remade.
But I haven't played the games, so I can't really tell other than looking at screenshots.
20€ for a remade game with 43 hours of content if only doing the main stuff... I mean, what should the price be then? The OG is 13€.
Of course, I never oppose to having cheaper games, but this seems like a decently fair price.

play it in any version you want, it's a masterpiece!! =)

how surprising .

Here in Argentina:
FF XV ARS$ 770
FF VIII Remaster ARS$ 700
What a joke.

Won't be buying it, but did enjoy the original. Square needs to release the FF Tactics games on Windows before I'll bite.
Still have original Windows edition of the game. Unlike the "new" one it includes Chocobo World.
Good, weird memories of the game. Just like the series should be.

Looks like Chocobo World was included with the original Steam release, just not in the new remaster. Both Steam versions however do lack the high quality cardboard binder to hold the cds and manual.
Dotemu, weren't they originally an illegal rom site? Even if they weren't they don't appear to be completely clean at the moment.

Has my favorite music, battle effects, and mini game in the entire series. Always thought the story was too convoluted though after the first disc.
That said, SquareEnix treats all their ports of old classics like dirt and I don't expect this to be any different (will have to wait for release to see what they messed up this time).

The effort they put into this isn't worth 9,99$, let alone 19,99$. They're insane. To everyone else, stick to the regular version of FFVIII on Steam. The "enhancements" that they offer with this remaster can actually be unlocked in-game via GFs. Pure laziness IMO.

I always really wanted to try out FF series(I even bought FF XV on Steam), but the reason I still haven't played any is their graphics and those kind of remasters. Like what is wrong with them, game still looks like it is from late 1990s why can't they do something like Resident Evil 2 has done. This isn't a remaster at all in my opinion, just another option to get more money from old fans. Don't think that I am a guy who only plays for graphics, I just have more good games to play nowadays, rather than to spend on such a "quality" one.

Read the reviews, seems that apart from the character models being touched up there's basically no noteworthy improvements. And just like the old PC port, still uses poor quality midi versions of the music, and doesn't support analog controls like the original PS1 version did.
Comment has been collapsed.
One would think that replacing the music and adding better controller support should be easy for a company the size of squeenix, but then again their in-game logging for the modem games that they have on steam has never worked for me, I always have to skip it because it does nothing.

From what I've read it seems like it's rough launch comes from a lack of actual remastering, I'm probably going to stick with the original base game. It's a shame because the card game is excellent. Definitely one of my least favourite in the series, but let's be honest, it's not bad.

Final Fantasy 7 is still the best in the series.
The "Remaster" is a joke tbh but FF8 wasn't that great to begin with, honestly.

"The impossible happened. A Final Fantasy 8 remaster was announced during Square Enix’s E3 2019 press conference. Final Fantasy 8 Remastered is coming with enhanced visuals in 2019 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
Final Fantasy 8 fans may remember the great Nintendo Direct snub of 2018, when Square Enix announced that Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy 9, and Final Fantasy 10 were all getting Nintendo Switch ports (those games also came to other platforms). There’s speculation however, that FF8’s source code was lost when the studio started to work on its next title.
It’s perhaps one of the most divisive titles in the franchise. The plot doesn’t just take strange turns or twists — it develops into a full-on cyclone, devouring and destroying expectations as it rages across four PlayStation discs. In honor of its 20th anniversary this year, we described its charm as:
The game’s genre mashup paves the way for memorable sequences like, “There’s a monster who bankrolled our school and he lives in the basement,” and, “Your girlfriend is possessed by a sorceress from the future in a space station, what do you do?”

It's expected to be released within this year, meanwhile still no news about The Last Remnant Remaster coming to steam (even though Square pulled the original one from steam).. :x
But I am finally getting enhanced. :p
