They work well together, just make sure to whitelist the sites you visit that you know are safe.

If it were me, I would probably do the following:
You are probably OK, but you may also want to check your browser for possible hijacking. Any add-ons or toolbars you didn't intentionally install should be removed. Firefox also has options to "reset"/wipe your browser and start fresh.

That's up to you. There is no 100% guarantee with an AV. Even the best retail AV programs aren't perfect. That is why the professionals recommend a multi-layered protection system. As your AV solution gets more complex, however, it becomes more burdensome. You start spending more time, money, and effort in dealing with your chosen protection.
Most people use one of those three levels of security. If you need even more protection, you should be asking yourself why. Human behavior is the greatest factor in cyber-security, so that should really be your focus when it comes to keeping safe. If you are diving into seedy websites containing hacks and viruses, you are going to have issues no matter good your security is.
For the record, I use WinDef and MWB Anti-Malware.

You've given good advice, that should help people who choose to follow it.
I want to make a recommendation for the Free version of Bit Defender. It's good for those who aren't very savy with things, it just runs and protects. It has really solid protection and detection rates. The downside is you can't schedule things or change when it updates and you can only do full system scans.

Internet security is a serious issue in today's society.

Windows Defender in Windows 10 isn't bad. Not saying I would use it now but hands down it's leaps and bounds better than it was in previous Windows OS. Truth of the matter though is no AV will 100% protect you as Khalaq stated. It's always good to have a standalone detection program like Malwarebytes AntiMalware on your PC to scan for things that make it through the first layer of protection.

A friend of mine sent me a link via skype and I clicked on it without looking, it opened and I quickly realised it was something dodgy and quickly closed it. I don't even remember what came up but yeah it was a google.com url with loads of % and =skype and end of the url, I don't know if I'm allowed to post it to show you guys...
Anyway I ran Windows Defender and also Malwarebytes but only things that came up were some old SlimDriver files which I had deleted ages ago but I'm still scared something will happen even though I ran virustotal and it says it's a clean site...
Any tips?
edit: Forgot to mention but I messeged my friend and he told me he hasn't used skype for ages which made me even more!
