Oh well, Croatian team lost to France in FIFA WC Finals. Congrats to the French, but at least we know how to throw the party.

So, if you choose to spend your holiday in Croatia, here is the invitation from our team: https://youtu.be/0XbIR7e9PYM
And we have free hugs for all: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCB_k57bv1w
You might not get one from the president, though. And some people might not be interested in free hugs, like Putin (he's too cool for that :), or Trump (he might not understand either of the two concepts XD)

Croatia was the better team, they should have won to be honest...

But the referee blew it..

Croatia was definitely the better team in the first half.
The referee definitely missed the dive by Griezmann that gave the free kick that lead to the OG.
He also decided, upon review, to award a penalty in what was a judgment call. I've heard people say it was definitely a penalty, and others say it definitely was not. It was certainly debatable.

Anyway, congratulations to Croatia-- it looks like a nice place; this is the point of the post and one I can support!

Definitely not a penalty... come on, in the World Cup Final?
And Mr. Pitana went to his VAR screen at the sideline, watched the replay like ten times or more, still seemed unsure, then walked away, WENT BACK FOR A SECOND, took another look and then decided for the penalty...

If you're not sure, it's not a penalty... :)

Don't look for reasons to give the penalty.

And Croatia was better overall, not just first half. They we're totally dominating in first half, I couldn't believe it myself to be honest.
But then France was gifted two goals..

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against France or something, I'm only bashing the referee xD

Di María you are horrible, the worst player in the history of Argentina.

It was Caballero's fault. He didn't play any more matches after that crucial error, the problem with the Argentina's team is all the pressure, they don't play well mostly due to that.

Yes,it was Caballero's fault, but Rebic kicks as never before haha. The problem with Argentina is Di María. This is just an example of many.

I will! :)
I came there as a child, in Jugoslavia (my father has been a lieutenant in the military stationed near Nova Gorica).
Then, I came back as a teenager, in independent Croatia.
And finally I saw Slovenia and Croatia another time 10 years ago!
Now I'm planning a trip to Greece (I'm from Northerh Italy, so I live relatively close from what we call Istria and Dalmazia (Istra and Dalmacija xD) and we're gonna stop in Zagreb!
But I wanna visit again after all those years Split and Rijeka!
I love all the Balkan countries :)

Actually, I would recommend a Balkan tour, starting with Slovenia and going to Croatia and to B&H and Serbia, at least to Sarajevo and Belgrade, if you have time & opportunity. The whole region is amazing, great people, nature and food... it's too bad the history has not been kind to us here, and it goes on even today.... but focus on good things as this is really a nice part of Europe to visit...

I'll definitely do a Balkan full tour somewhen!!
Unfortunately, my parents travelled a lot in the region but they were forced to stay out of Albania and other areas (they tried both from North and from South decades ago xD)..
So I've never been in many areas, although I visited what are now Slovenia (multiple times of course, being so close), Croatia, small parts of Bosnia (Banja Luka, never been to Sarajevo though) and small parts of Serbia too (Novi Sad, Belgrade).
Of course I visited also Romania and Bulgaria, but I've never been to Albania, Kosovo, Herzegovina, Macedonia and Montenegro, among the other states and regions!
We want to travel to Greece so we'll take a straight road and definitely see Belgrade way better than I did many years ago, and most of all Southern Serbia and something in Macedonia FYROM before entering Greece, I'd really love to see Macedonia :)
I don't know about Kosovo though xD
Yeah, I love Slavic cultures in general and the Balkans are one of the most interesting regions in the whole world. I'd love to visit them many times, exploring also the west part that I've always missed apart from the Northwest which is of course very closely linked to Italy..
From here it takes only 13-14 hours to get to Greece going through Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and Macedonia so why not stopping in the most beautiful cities?
Plus.. it's my girlfriend that being Sicilian loves the Greek culture, but I'm Northern Italian and I prefer the Slavic one xD

Enjoy it wherever you go, since Greece is also a great country to visit - been there once before the big economic crisis, so I don't know how is the life now for Greek people, but the country is fascinating !

<3 Hravatska!

My best friend married last March, one of the 4 cities he visited in his honey moon was Duvrobnik and since then he fell in love with the country, he supported Croatia from the beginning of the World Cup and he was heart broken when they lost the final.

I sympathize with the french team since 1998 and Zidane is my favorite player ever, and we were only 2 out of 10 friends tu support France, Croatia won the hearts of the world!! I wish someday I may have the opportunity to visit, that promotional video is quite amazing.

I think that this is a great place for holidays, especially if you can't speak Croatian, so you get to ignore the local media and the political events, which are fairly depressing, so I feel much better when I ignore them, too... :)

As a French baguette, what are the chances of getting brutally murdered by crazy supporters if I go to Croatia ? :(

I couldn't care less about the World Cup. I didn't watch a single match, even the final. I would have gladly let Croatia (or anyone) win. only to avoid a revival of football mood for at least 4 years. I then can't speak about how the teams were or were not great, who deserved the most the cup, or who would win in a pissing contest.

I just saw a beautiful tiny country that usually is non-existent in the French news (and usually, when there is no news, there is no bad), and 4 millions proud, kind and joyful united people. That was really refreshing to see, a little bit like a few years ago with Iceland for...Euro 2016 (?).
I don't know if it's just a mask that will drop in the next weeks, and I know nothing about your politics, economics, etc, but what I saw was really pleasant.
You may have lost the cup, but you won better. Just look at the support you got all around the world.

I think you can even speak French when you visit us :) This was a big thing for the country, since the economic and social trends have been extremely negative for the last few years here - actually, since joining EU in 2013. This is the first good thing that actually happened in 5 years and that's why so many fans were throwing out crazy parties for the return of the national soccer team. I am afraid that in a few days, it'll be all gone, optimism will be forgotten and everything goes back to political quarrels, endless discussions about 50-year old history and ideology, young people moving to other EU countries and media providing cynical reporting about the whole thing. Dreams are nice but they don't tend to last for long, unfortunately.

Hey!
We're planning a Balkan tour by the end of August and start of September.
We'll rent a car and drive to Belgrade, Sarajevo, Mostar, Kotor and along the Dalmatian Coast.
So far we'll touch base in Dubrovnik, Split, Zadar, Rijeka and Pula before we return to Zagreb.
Do you have any suggestions on what not to miss? Or how many days would be enough for each place? We've allowed 9 days for Croatia.
Keep in mind we're travelling with a 1 year old baby so parties and hiking trails (like Plitvice) are out of the equation for us.
Anything that you suggest might come handy.

By the way.. congrats on the second place :) Was cheering for you guys in the finals (argentinean here ;)

Hello... I think you have a pretty good plan for your trip :) All the places you planned are quite interesting & have nice places to see. Dubrovnik is usually quite crowded even at the end of August and it's probably the best idea to park your car in the central garage (google for dubrovnik public garage - there is only one) which is appx 15-20 min by foot from the old town. The prices of parking anywhere near the old town (if available at all) are exorbitant, as well as taxis. You need about a day to see the most important things there - but, there is much more to Dubrovnik area than the old town. You can try sleeping in Ćilipi, Konavli, or some other rural surroundings, which are very nice, with much lower prices than in the town of Dubrovnik and offer very good food. You probably don't want to miss the area around the river Neretva. This is where the river flows into the sea, with a natural estuary, Around small towns of Opuzen and Metkovic, there are many river tours, restaurants with local food (river fish mostly), etc. Worth a short stay, or even you can locate here when going to a day visit to Dubrovnik. Split is very nice (I was born there :) and it's become one of the most important destinations in the Mediterranean. I would probably add Šibenik to your list, especially that you have the Krka national park there, which is more accessible than Plitvice, if you have a small baby. Zadar is also great. I would opt for a day or two in each destination. Between Šibenik and Zadar, do not miss Vransko jezero, which is another great place, overlooked by tourists. Rijeka and Pula are not my favourites, although you should drop to Pula, at least for half a day to see the old amphiteatar. The rural part of Istria is spectacular, where you can try to go to Motovun (famous for film festival, truffles restaurants etc), and you can combine this with Hum - it's advertised to be the smallest town in the world :) Try Istrian home food. You can consider Pazin as well. Rovinj is nice, but can be pricey and full of tourists at that time. On your trip to Zagreb, you might not want to miss the Rastoke on the river of Korana, near Slunj. Also similar to Plitvice, but more accessible with a baby. There are so many places, that it's different to give final recommendations. Try to look at Web pages https://www.putovnica.net/naj-naj/12-ideja-za-vikend-izlet-u-sjevernoj-i-sredisnjoj-hrvatskoj and https://www.jutarnji.hr/domidizajn/eksterijeri/idealne-destinacije-u-hrvatskoj-za-vikend-s-obitelji/6220581/ - you'll recognize the names of places and photos :) Hope this helps, I needed some time to mentally prepare and start writing, because this is a good conutry to visit and I always have problems recommending :)

Holy cow!! Thank you for your detailed reply mate and sorry for not getting back to you until now.
I've been busy actually booking hotels through airbnb and booking.com (restricted by the ones that have parking for free). I read this is pretty much needed in Sarajevo due to robbery. I'm used to not leave anything inside the car as here it is a thief magnet. Had my brand new car stereo stolen about 8 years ago and had to replace it with a removable one.
I checked all your suggestions :) Damn those parking places in Dubrovnik. They are incredibly expensive. Couldn't believe the daily ticket was about 64 euros during peak season (checked the price list according to season and guess what.. yes.. the most expensive is during my stay.. lucky me). To put it into perspective (not my case otherwise I wouldn't be able to travel abroad) but those 64 euros are almost 1/5 of a minimum wage in Argentina :O :O
Also we decided to leave out Rijeka based on your suggestions and a couple forums we've been checking. We will stay in Pula, I know not one of your favorites but by the end of the road trip we felt we were rushing it a bit. Might want to slow down and actually enjoy it even though it means not doing everything we want. Who knows, may be we are lucky enough to return :)
We also had to take one day off of Zagreb. We wanted to take a plane from there to London (have to get there for our return flight) but prices were not convenient. Finally decided to travel to Vienna by bus and take the plane there. Believe it or not this move was half the price of staying the night and leaving from Zagreb. Unfortunately we will have one less day in Croatia.
Have just accepted your friend request and also added to the whitelist for your kindness and taking time to give an awesome answer.
Really appreciate it.
Take care!

Hello and thank you for an update... hope you have a good trip to the region. In Sarajevo, car stealing/vandalism is not such a big deal, if your car is parked in a hotel garage, or some paid parking, but if it's a new, especially German car like VW, and you leave it on the street, there could be a problem. Pula is actually a very good choice, probably better than Rijeka, and travelling to Vienna is a good option - you can take a 150 Kn (20 Eur) per person Flixbus from Zagreb (www.flixbus.hr) Enjoy your trip !
