Nominations

I'm surprised as fuck by the fact that they didn't give Amy Adams a nomination for Best Actress in Arrival, she was easily a shoe-in for the category. Also, fucking Meryl Streep again?! Other than those, I liked most of the nominations, though Scoresese's Silence didn't get any love.

Try out Hacksaw Ridge, Arrival, La La Land and Moonlight from this year's nominations when they later release on DVD. Great films, and can easily be appreciated even by a person who doesn't watch movies regularly!

A lot of these haven't released yet here and I didn't have a chance to see them yet, so I can't really comment on those. But I'm rather surprised that La La Land didn't get shortlisted for best picture after it swept the Golden Globes. Excellent film that, and a pity it didn't make the cut.

I feel it's a close competition between Hacksaw Ridge (provided that Mel Gibson has been forgiven) and Manchester by the Sea. Arrival is too sci-fi for Academy voters' tastes, who're usually known for following top critic listings and other "reputable" reviews rather than actually review the film for themselves. That being said, La La Land did get 14 nominations, so it's not like it got snubbed unlike a certain director known for The Departed, Goodfellas, Casino, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver and Shutter Island.

Yeah, I alluded to it, but I didn't get a chance to see those yet (Arrival releases next week). Haven't seen Silence yet either, but maybe the Academy thought they had given Scorsese his due last time with their five nominations for the Wolf of Wallstreet (though no wins). I think their choices are puzzling more often than not anyway ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

No way Hacksaw Ridge wins Best Picture; I'd bet any game on Steam. Manchester has a very good shot, as do La La Land and Moonlight, but none of the others.

La La Land isn't even in the competition for the Best Picture Award, and yes, I have already acknowledged that fact. The sad part is that Hacksaw Ridge by itself is a great film, and a solid performance by Andrew Garfield. MbtS has the best shot, even though I have fingers crossed for Arrival.

EDIT: Just checked, it is now in the nominations. Wasn't there when I and some other users commented below.

I don't understand why you keep saying La La La isn't in the running; it's explicitly included on the page you link to.

EDIT: I see you looked again. :)

I'll say my point is still valid - the film isn't that great by itself, but rather stands on the outstanding performance by both of its leading actors, plus the phenomenal soundtrack. I liked Chazelle's Whiplash much more, but that's just an opinion. Manchester has a really good shot, simply because of the nature of the Academy Voters. I'd say the reason La La Land even ended up in the nominations is because of the massive hype and publicity it got from other reviewers, and the Voters are notorious for relying on reviews of others and sometimes not even personally watching the film themselves

I agree that Whiplash was better, but as to your other point, whatever its actual merits, the smart money has La La Land as a massive favorite: https://www.betfair.com/exchange/plus/#/special-bets/market/1.127976768 Moonlight is second, with Manchester a distant third. (Incidentally, those are the 3 I picked out above as likely). None of the others are even serious contenders.

La La La La reminds me of The arstist, that won an award simply for being retro. Its up until late in the movie that the plot starts picking up, and at that point the musical just hits a standstill.
Dont get me wrong its a great movie, i just dont understand all the hype

I don't think that's the only reason The Artist (a much better movie than La La Land) won in its year, but it was a big factor. This also seemed relevant to our discussion:

I can only speak of my own experience, where I went in to La La Land almost blind thinking the wife would enjoy it after seeing the trailer. We both loved it, it exceeded whatever expectations I had based on the trailer alone. I recommended it to my friends and acquaintances, as I thought the film was genuinely refreshing and excellent. It was only later that it picked up significant buzz and then went on to win awards.

I had the opposite experience with the Artist, where I only caught that one after it had already had a mountain of praise lavished on it, so expectations were perhaps unrealistically (and unfairly) high. While I enjoyed that film enough, I didn't really understand the hype for it at the time and thought its main selling point was a bit of a glorified gimmick. I do wonder if I would be able to give a more objective--or at least more balanced--appraisal if I were to revisit it now.

Pretty much, except it's rather conspicuously missing from the best picture category, which was unexpected and quite unusual in light of its best direction nomination.

As usual, the best stuff is left out almost completely: 1 performance nomination for Nocturnal Animals, the same - for Elle, script nomination and nothing else for Lobster. This list is just plain boring, no surpsises here, some movies are way too complex for Oscar.

Lobster is considered a 2015 release - it played in the film festivals of that year, and went to a general release in 2016.

But it still is eligible for an award, and I think it deserved a bit more love than was given. The Lobster was fantastic, but what left it out of the running was the earlier release. If only the Academy had fair voters and a systematic approach to objectively rate movies...

I'd agree with you (BTW, I watched it in 2015 during some Moscow festival as well); still, it's considered to be a 2016 release when it comes to Oscar or Golden Globe. It's there, among the nominees, as you can see for yourself. It just differs from mainstream Oscar format too strongly to be really noticed by academics.

Huh, didn't notice it down at the bottom at original screenplays. Yeah, it's definitely too 'out there' for these award ceremonies.

I didn't know the Lobster was eligible for this round. What a shame, it was a unique and brilliantly grotesque take that I really liked.

Thanks for asking. I think I can generalize my complaint without too many spoilers, and if not we can resort to hidden text (as alpshrk points out). 'Awful' is too dramatic; more precisely, I found it both deeply unsatisfying and implausible. One problem was it was the ending very, very specific; I actually would have preferred not to know what the issue was or how it got resolved, over the ending that is presented. The other aspect of this was that the longer I thought about it, the less satisfying it seemed. It's not that I didn't understand it; it's that I understood it all too well and found it insulting as an ending in what is otherwise an intelligent movie. Does that make sense?

That said, it's a fabulous premise. The first hour would have made a great pilot for a high-budget, 10-episode scripted drama.

Not too thrilled to see Kubo pitted against Zootopia and Moana, looks like Laika won't get any recognition for their work this time around either... There's only three categories that interest me, the rest I don't that much care whatever happens, so it's not going to be exciting Awards this time around.
Foreign Language Film: Land of Mine.
Make Up and Hairstyling: A Man Called Ove, I have not seen the film but I do not want either of the other two winning :D
Visual Effects: Kubo. I know it won't happen, but it's the only other chance for Laika to get the spot.

Will still be playing "pick the winner!" even if I don't care. :D

Silence: Liam Neesons gets TAKEN, and Spiderman and Kylo Ren team up to save him, only to find out that they have no superpowers, and that no one was brave enough to tell Scorsese his final film was too long.

If you want the movie that set the bar for what Silence should have been, check out "The Mission" with De Niro and Irons, with an Ennio Morricone score to boot.

I never really understood the point of awards. Aren't these (GOTY as well) just overblown versions of someone's opinion? Why are they considered so important?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Kinda yeah, but it depends on the award.
The Oscars are voted on by people who actually work in movies, actors, directors, and such. So the people who are experts in the craft think that the award winner is the best that year. This is probably more true with the technical awards, whereas the acting/directing awards can be a bit more political.

unfortunately, it's a mixed bag. some oscar winners are great, some kinda suck seriously, shakespeare in love? The Weinstein brothers have become especially good at the politics of the awards and earning more than they should. It's also worth noting that the major oscars (acting, directing) tend to favor specific types of movies.

Permalink

Yeah, the Weinstein company is infamous at this point for the campaigning they do in order to get the Oscar nom for the movies they produce.

the oscars made the occasional blunder before them, but so many mediocre weinstein movies have won that the awards are completely pointless now
