How would it affect you if it was true?

Hmmm the IGN article mentions them looking into buying Valve as well... http://www.ign.com/articles/2018/01/29/rumor-suggests-microsoft-has-considered-acquiring-ea-valve-pubg-corp

To which I throw back my head and laugh heartily, all the while secretly hoping that this never, EVER, happens. I can see it now...
"First order of business, every game which support different platforms or older version of windows must go."
The boardroom claps
"Next up, how does a monthly subscription for online play sound?"
Murmurs of agreement amongst the executives as they plan what colour lambo they'll buy next
"Steam keys? Why on earth would anyone want those, people should be happy to only buy from the official windows store"

id be all for this. it means we'd likely see more console ports of xbox games coming to pc - not only that but also to more 'palatable' platforms and not their stupid windows store... and its not like ms is going to be any less likeable or do a worse job of running EA or valve than their current owners.

Microsoft is a weird company, almost everything they tried for the last 10 years failed. They paid minecraft for an absurd amount of money, they lost billions on Nokia, it's like if they had infinite money (thanks to Windows and office). I'm not a big fan of EA but Microsoft is completely lost, they have no idea where they are going.

Well, they only lost shareholders money, and same shareholders might have invested more in Samsung than Nokia, then Nokia closed -> Samsung's shares raised -> profit. Only ones who lost are the workers of Nokia phones. So I guess it's all calculated.
Maybe they want to buy Origin and Steam to combine it into only one - Steam. Which would make me happy. If they plan on making some other platform and reset all the games previously gathered on Steam I'd be so pissed. But, if you read ToS for Steam, all the games are not DRM-free but lend to us, so if the platform goes, they don't have to provide any compensation. 🙄

I'd love if they brought Sims 4 on Steam with all DLCs. 😍

I cannot imagine how EA can be worse if Microsoft bought the company. However, I will celebrate if Microsoft dissolves EA after the buy out.

why not, they can not make ea-microsoft store worse than steam store.
And if ppl will move to ea-microsoft, maybe Volvo will finally think about the quality of thousands games presented in their store

I dunno how true this is but two big companies becoming 1 big company shouldn't change too much!

Well, Microsoft Game Studios (where I guess the EA franchises would end up) at least act relatively decently, not killing off dev studios as easily and actively attempting keeping franchises alive or reigniting them (see Age of Empires, Killer Instinct...)

They basically remind me of how EA was in the 2000's, actually doing nice things. (in those days, EA did stuff like founding Visceral games, scavening Burnout and keep that distinct from NFS, publishing TImeSplitters 3 after Eidos dropped the series etc.)

But they have killed off dev studios, and they killed off one of my favorite game studios (which was ensemble studios, the original creators of Age of Empires, one of my favorite games when I was a young kid).

But I guess not as bad track record at killing studios as EA.

EA is basically the dirt on the bottom of the shoes worn by an anthropomorphic turd, so I would say it literally can't get any worse.

Microsoft already has a bunch of dormant IPs, so any kind of buyout of a company like EA or Valve isn't exactly the smartest option in terms of spending. What they need is raw manpower.

How about start up a few dev studios, preferably spaced out, and let them choose to do a new IP or pick from the back catalog and get stuff cranking. They've lost this gen, so all they can do is catch up for the next and this is how they could best do it.

I guess if this is true (for buying EA) I don't think it can get worse than it already is, I just hope that they keep with origin and not just move everything over to the windows store.

and god forbid they manage to buy valve, all I can say... that would mean the end of the world, well er gaming world.

^and if they manage to buy both EA and Valve here is what will probably happen. 1. they dissolve both origin and steam and then have everything move over to their windows store equivalent or create a new distribution platform? 2. They dissolve both their own platform, and origin and just move everything over to steam.

Knowing microsoft though, unless they manage to get steam on xbox one? they will probably try to keep with their own platform.
