I like what they are doing with Play Anywhere. I honestly can't wrap my head around the fact that we usually have to pay full price for a game we already own just to be able to play it on another platform, especially considering we're told time and time again that we're just buying a license to play the games.

I was so curious about Play Anywhere that I recently bought Forza Horizon 3 to try it out and it works like a charm, besides the fact that it's an amazing game on its own.

Not like EA can get any worse. I'm guessing MS want the sports and FPS titles to be Windows store exclusives so people will finally use their store front.

Probably won't happen. EA's value is too huge. Microsoft will take decades before they can get back the money on what they will eventually pay if it happens. Game development takes years to make and costs a lot of money. Buying EA won't yield great profit for Microsoft. Buying PUBG Corp on the other hand would be a better deal for Microsoft.

Comment has been collapsed.

Considering that they paid 2.5 billion for Mojang, I doubt that EA would be a worse investment.
And their target wouldn't be to make a huge profit, it's about having exclusive games that will increase their base by several millions. All revenue generated by those millions of additional customers, is indirect "profit" from such an investment.

The question would be though, if EA could hold their best licenses. I doubt that the FIFA would accept to make less money, just because Microsoft wants it to be exclusive. ;-P

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Mojang is a small company when they bought it. Comparing EA to Mojang is like comparing a mouse to an elephant. The difference is huge. EA just earned 4.8 billion just for 2017. EA would be worth hundreds of billion of dollars if someone would really consider buying it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You must have missed the part where EA is a publicly listed company, valued at 35 billion. Even with the usual bonus to make the deal attractive for shareholders, the price would be hardly higher than 50 billion $. "Hundreds of billion dollars"? Sure.

And as you said, Mojang was and is a small company. With only one hit, no unique technology or expertise. There is no doubt which one would be the better investment.

That's an odd way of phrasing things. If they lost in "open competition" wouldn't they just pack up and go home in your mind? Also, I may be reading you wrong but it sounds like you think it's somehow shady of them to bring in exclusive titles for Xbox which is a bit odd to me since this is the exact advantage Sony has over Microsoft's offerings.

Ok, now you lost me again. They lost the console wars to Sony in "open competition", which I only can interpret as you think it was fair competition or did you intend open competition to mean something else?

Anyway, according to you, Microsoft are now going to stack the deck to win (?) this competition they already lost? Which to most people implies they are doing something shady.

^^^^ Probably that (good call jeridex)

But, if it did happen, I think that it would be a good thing. Sure, there would be a lot of stuff coming to the windows store, but I think that the boost it would give the XBox library would be nice. I'm an XBox guy instead of a Playstation guy (although I still have an old PS2 laying around that I dust off every once in a while 😁) because, overall, the XBox does all of the other multimedia stuff (that is, everything other than gaming) better than Playstation (plus, I invested in HDR TVs, and the XB1-X is the only console that handles HDR, both in terms of video and audio codecs). But that said, the Playstation does have a better overall library of games available. So, even though I already have more than I have time to play, if EA were bought by MS, then I could go from busy to utterly overwhelmed by my game library just like all of the PS4 owners. 🤣

I disagree with the genetic fallacy. In case of a website, we have to check if site is trustworthy or not. For example, if RT, that belongs to the Russian goverment, and it's known to shamelessly change facts to suit their propaganda, (https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/nov/08/russia-today-western-cynics-lap-up-putins-tv-poison, http://littleatoms.com/russia-today-piers-robinson, https://www.stopfake.org/en/anatomy-of-an-info-war-how-russia-s-propaganda-machine-works-and-how-to-counter-it/ https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/inside-russias-propaganda-machine) published an article today, a few days from the russian presidential election, about how much Russia have improved under Putin, I would be much more careful than if New York Times published the same article.

It's not a secret that many people don't trust Polygon. I myself don't trust them. I wasn't trying to use the bandwagon fallacy, but only politely pointing out some reasons.

Some of the names being thrown around as possible acquisitions by Microsoft are, frankly, astounding, even unthinkable. But the fact that they are doing the rounds is instructive. The most recent one we heard (from a reliable source close to Microsoft) was, in fact, Electronic Arts. We also heard a whisper about Valve and about Korean outfit PUBG Corp., which Microsoft last year signed to a timed exclusive for its hit survival shooter, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.

You forgot to include that this article claims that they're almost down to buy anything. Yeah, sounds about right. It's also not like there's a zillion other possibilities with a chance of better penciling out financially, for either EA or Microsoft. So... not buying that for a dollar, I guess?

EA now stands for Electronic Artificat....I could care less who buys them they can't do any worse then EA already has by destroying several good franchises in the name of stupidity and maybe a sprinkle of greed.

Though I don't see this as a huge deal for Microsoft since well pretty much most of what EA pushes out now re-hashed and boring ass franchises.Nothing in their catalog excites me and what is left is a former shell of itself.

This is what gaming as a whole has become...

"EA will time ‘Anthem’ launch to please investors, not gamers"

As I said I could care less if they get bought out or go under as I said before they have no franchise I could not live without. They will not die but I can at least dream.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

''destroying several good franchises'' sorry but i had to correct you there a bit, they destroyed A TON of fantastic franchises, by killing off a great amount of studios, sorry, just nitpicky. By the way, Microsoft doesnt mind rehashes and boring ass franchises, otherwise you wouldnt see so many gears of war, and forzas, they are just like EA, they rehash a ton, except unlike EA, they dont have the IPs. Lastly we can live without any franchise realisticaly, but franchises we love would make life better if were around, like Def Jam, Burnout, Thrill Kill, Desert Strike, Sabotuer, The Godfather, C&C. But again, we can live without them as we have so far. I dont dream that EA would die though, i hope for it, wait for it, anticipate it.

If we go by that logic they all are guilty of bad re-hashes, Nintendo included all the Zelda and Mario games, Square with FF and etc.

"Lastly we can live without any franchise realisticaly, but franchises we love would make life better if were around"
Realistically you took what I said way out of context but that is okay, thanks for pointing out the obvious my life is a lot better because of it.You come off as some fanboy for EA since you also took the time to mention Microsoft when clearly this debate is about EA so Microsoft does not need to be a part of this.

Most franchises are going to be re-hashes if you use the basic definition of a re-hash because most do little to change the core of the game. Most of the time they just add new story and gameplay but for the most part, have not evolved much since the first game in the series.

You could even count GTA V as re-hash since really nothing much has changed from the core gameplay since GTA 2 when they moved to a 3D world. At its core, it's still about killing, stealing, and causing chaos only with each new one in the series they expand the playground. That IMO is not a re-hash IMO you want a real re-hash look at BF3 and compare it to 4,or pretty much any COD to the previous one.All pretty much the same core play with some fresh paint and a few gameplay changes.

In the end I still don't like EA much and it is mostly due to what I said, boring franchises with boring re-hashes throwing in the mix.I think Microsoft has had more new I.P. in the last couple years then EA prolly has in the last 10.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Most Zelda games are rehashes, all of them however, are not, same with mario, that should be clear for anyone paying a little attention. I do not come off as some EA fanboy, i come off as someone realistic. This debate is about Microsoft and ONLY then about EA as micro started this whole rumor thing, EA are the buyees while microsoft are the buters. Most franchises indeed ARE rehashes, but were okay with that since each quote on quote rehash improves upon its predecesor with the same everything you know but better and when that isnt the case or the flaws are too great, it becomes a very much more exactly that seen, a rehash, a bad thing when you dont enjoy that rehash. GTA has evolved a little with each tittle but still remains that same expierience in core that WE KEEP COMING BACK TO so you know, despite being a rehash, they do a great job at it as we still come back to them. GTA V is a rehash, yes, i would rather say since GTA 3 than 2. Maybe about killing, but i would say mostly about driving, shooting with various guns, doing missions, meeting wierd characters and earning money. BF3 and 4 was indeed a poor rehash, CoDs indeed are rehashes, the worst kind. Nobody likes EA buddy, i despise them and wish swift death upon them for ages. EA doesnt have boring franchises, EA has overused. overrehashed currently active franchises. Maybe microsoft had more new ips than EA but EA still had too, just almost nothing. The Sims, Need for Spped, Fifa, Battlefield, Mass Effect, Dragon Age are best examples, EA doesnt have new games, got tons of old ones but they will never use them again.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You still missed it....my complaint revolves around EA and what I think of them as a company and I would not miss their franchise or re-hashes.So I do not see what Microsoft and the rumor of them buying it has to do with my view of EA?Yet here you are still trying to drag them into it.

Plenty of people like EA otherwise they would not exist anymore.EA has boring franchises I don't need you to agree with it and you're free not to agree, but just because you say they aren't doesn't mean they aren't just in your opinion. Now you have to throw in overused to try and show they aren't boring most were boring before that. Most franchises I liked they either killed or long forgot about, the ones left I liked at one time are a boring mess of a shell of what they use to be.They pretty much kill anything that is not a money machine and take a little risk.

I don't despise them I just don't like like EA as a whole.

" This debate is about Microsoft and ONLY then about EA as micro started this whole rumor thing, EA are the buyees while microsoft are the buters."

What the hell is your point?I never went off topic or added to the topic. The topic was about both,Microsoft may have had the lead that does not mean I have less say about EA or it counts less toward the over all subject because Microsoft is the main player. They are both part of the rumor and both would be part of the so called deal so I would say both count as equals on the subject along with opinions on both matter the same.

GTA V as a whole I would not count as a total re-hash but let's face it the game as a whole is not what sells it, its the re-hashed gameplay that sells it.They nail the atmosphere and current events and sometimes the humor but overall the core of the game is the same crap you did over 15 years ago just with fresh paint.I would not be surprised if the next game is Vice City since they seem to want to re-hash cities.I was never debating if it was an actual re-hash just said at the core it could be count as a re-hash and throwing fresh paint on a crap car does not make it a better version.

Almost certainly not at all. The chance of Microsoft taking EA in a radically different direction is close to zero, so I don't see myself breaking my now 4 year long streak of not buying EA. While I've never used the Microsoft Store, I'd hardly be more inclined to use it if it suddenly sold EA... and I don't see Origins becoming the new Microsoft Store.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWfX8J9jhkI if anything, i think if something about that is rumored, they will buy some exclusive rights, like maybe Titanfall 3 only for the Xbox. This is one way that could be done to slap the shit out of Valve to make them create games again. If Microsoft does infact want to outright, buy these companies like EA, it would be a match made in heaven as Micro loves microtransactions like EA, look at the newest Forza and the new avatar profile crap for example, it would be a great but evil alliance. Or one could hope EA fails micro and Micro dishes out the ultimate irony, by killing off EA as EA kills off studios. Either way, i dont care and dont think anything drastic will come out of it but we can wait and see.
