Here in the forums, we get a lot of request for suggestions. Anime, Movies and TV shows are all well covered, but what about books/novels?

While not a classic or even well known, I have recently started, or rather restarted reading the Xanth series by Peirs Anthony. I am currently on the 3rd of the series even though Ive read a far number, about half, of them already.

So Steamgifts, what is a great book or series to read? It can be a classic like Moby Dick, 10,000 leagues under the Sea, Tom Sawyer, or something else such as Metro, Sunshine, Hitchhiker's Guide.

Ah! Another Cussler fan. I started reading his Oregon and NUMA series about a year and lets say "I'm hooked."

Had a some free time for once a few months ago and read 8 Cussler books in 2 weeks. Borrowed 4 from the library, went back a week later and handed them all back and the librarian said "Didn't you enjoy them? You returned them quick!" to which I replied "Nope, I'm here to return them and get another 4 out..." The look on her face was priceless.

The Fault in Our Stars- John Green (2012)

I Have no Mouth, and I Must Scream- Harlan Ellison (1967)

The Latter is a short story, but one of the best ones I've ever read.

Really anything by John Green. I've read his first three books and they're great.

Yes! Terry is the king, hands down. He writes nice stories for children, too. But skip on The Dark Side of the Sun and read Douglas Adams Hitchhiker instead.

Authors I like are, J A Konrath, Christopher Brookmyre (not his recent Chris Brookmyre stuff), James Herbert (mainly the Rats trilogy), there's loads more but that's all I can remember off the top of my head.

I'm finishing Digital Fortress from Dan Brown, and it's really good if you like plot twists

Dan Brown wrote better books, but it's a good start.

I don't want to be rude. But certainly Dan Brown's books are not good. They might be entertaining to some point, but not good.

I second that opinion, they are page turners but not redefining the art or anything. I just stated that there are better titles by the author in my eyes.

It was not adressed to you only. I just wanted to say my opinion. I've read several and they are kind of entertaining tbh but I don't really like his style nor his "sensationalism"

The Witcher by A.Sapkowski! Especially if you are polish, I have heard varied opinions about the english translation.

Everything from Yann Martel is also a good read.

Jurassic Park, anything by Mark Twain, Agatha Christie if you like mysteries, Mortal Engines if you like Steampunk, the Map of Time if you like books that are supposed to be about time travel but are actually about sex...

If you give me anything specific I can probably recommend. I read so much random crap

FORGOT THE BEST BOOK EVER. MONTE CRISTO

If you enjoyed Dino Park (i.e. the book, not the movie), I suggest you give other titles by Michael Crichton a try. Start with Congo, hop over to Andromeda Strain, then Binary, Sphere, Timeline and Rising Sun (Nippon Connection), they all were transformed into movies and TV shows. Prey, Next and Airframe are worth a read as well.

Alright, thanks for the advice. I've been meaning to give his other books a try but wasn't sure where to start.

I'd recommend Sir Arthur Conan Doyle rather that Miss Christie for mysteries.

Depends I guess. Both are great. Not all of Christie's books are mind-blowing, but some are simply genius

Opinions D:

I just never got into Agatha's books, and my mom is a great fan of her and used to try to shove them in me when I lived there. But I simply didn't really like them.

I don't read sci-fi or fantasy, but here are some classics/modern novels I'd recommend:

  • 1984 by George Orwell.
  • The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen.
  • Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh.
  • Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel.

Isn't it? I just feel like I needed to point it out as it's horribly unknown and is one of the main sources (if not the only one) from 1984, which is kinda overrated.

Also as far as distopyan novels are concerned and as iqqobo pointed out. Brave New World is quite a good choice for a read too.

I would recommend American Gods by Neil Gaiman.

You want classics? Well the only one I can remember that could possibly fall into that category is:

  • Lolita
  • The Count of Monte Cristowere

are the only ones that come to mind.

Personal books I'm reading right now are:

  • Summer, Fireworks, and My Corpse
  • Genocidal Organ
  • Deva Zan: The Chosen Path
  • Summer of Ubume
  • The Lord of the Sands of Time

Monte Cristo is really good. If you want an anime along with that, I'd suggest Gankutsuou. It's pretty much a telling of the story from the Count and set in a futuristic society. Weird, but interesting. And very pretty.

Twilight books, but the movies are even better.......xD

ok, serious answer: I like to read a book series from Wolfgang Hohlbein, but I'm not sure it's been released in other languages as well, translated by myself it would be called: The Chonicles of the Immortals, which is about vampires ^^
