I didn't see any recent polls to this effect, so I thought I'd ask my fellow Steamgifters:
What's your favorite video game setting/location?
This question pertains mostly to story-based games or games where immersion adds to enjoyment (e.g., not most puzzle games or platformers). But for these games, what milieu do you like to play in the most? I tried to cover a variety of settings (including those I don't typically play), but if I've missed yours, please respond Other and let me know what I've missed. As you may know, I can't update the poll answers. If you want to be more specific, then maybe select the closest answer, then specify your exact answer in the comments.

And of course, a requisite GA for your time-- a story-based game that maybe doesn't fit into any of these categories. :)
Level 2, basic SGTools filter (no rule-breakers).

[Edit: Thank you for all of your responses (and votes)! I'm reading every one of them!]
[Edit2: I'm surprised by the small number of "Superhero / comics" folks. It seems like it's a well-regarded setting (though maybe it's more of a genre than a setting?), so I would have expected it to get more votes here.]

Setting doesn't really matter to me. I'd rather have a fun game to play than a game that's in a cool setting that isn't very much fun.

Certainly fun is more important than setting, but is there a setting that is more likely to be fun for you, particularly in a story-rich or immersive game?

I just like things to look nice. It's no fun to play a game that looks ugly. I've never really given much thought to settings in games. I don't care what the setting is, I just want to have a good time in that setting.

Not even sure what that is...Torment: Tides of Numenera?

One of the most extreme examples is Shadowrun. But many of the later Final Fantasies, chiefly FFXI and FFXIII are great examples as well. It is sci-fi, where the scientific elements are less prominent and let the fantasy-like aspects take place. If you know comics and by chance read early to mid-90s Top Cow Comics (Witchblade, Tomb Raider, Fathom, Soulfire, Aphrodite IX…), it's like that.

I don't know any of those other ones, but Shadowrun makes sense. I think Torment fits that category also.
So did you choose "Sci-fi, other" or "Fantasy, but neither anime nor medieval?"

Sci-fi, other. Technofantasy is classified under sci-fi most of the time.

Do you think Deus Ex is a technofantasy game?

You could say that with a very broadening of the term, but it is cyberpunk. (Shadowrun as well, but there the fantasy aspect is rather prominent with the use of magic and such fantasy races as dragons, elves, dwarfs, orks, and trolls.) Deus Ex builds more in classic sci-fi tropes of trying to find answers to social questions, and there is an actual focus on some scientific background building.

I usually like fantasy settings. We get the medieval setting a lot, but it's really exciting to explore a place completely different like in Morrowind

Probably medieval

I love variety. being able to visit different places with their own cultures and style is always more immersive than "the whole game takes place in this one city and a few identical bits of countryside and caves around it". beyond that, fantasy, sci-fi, modern, so long as it fits the story I'm fine, but I like variety in my games list as much as within the games
I think I'm one of those fussy people who when you ask their favourite anything just give you an essay on why they can't pick just one...

I voted for "Surrealistic / abstract" because that is probably the best choice out of the listed ones.
I love artsy games, exploration, walking sims and all that, the look of the game is often the most important factor to me (although games with fun play and not-so-cool design are the ones I played the most XD)

I love those games too...especially when they are relaxing, immersive, graphically appealing, and with a nice soundtrack.

To be honest, I don't really have a favorite setting, but there's one thing I like and I haven't seen it that much in videogames. Remember the first Resident Evil? Not the remake, but the original, even tho it doesn't matter that much which one you pick. Anyway, what I like about it is that it all plays in one place. Something that reoccured in Dead Space, which I loved.
If you can make a game that has one setting that doesn't get boring I'm all over it.

Sort of the opposite of this comment, then? :)
I think few devs take on the challenge you propose: make a game that has one setting that doesn't get boring

Voted Sci-Fi, other, post-apocalyptic - those I enjoy the most, but also Fantasy, medieval is right there on top of my list. Elder Scrolls etc.

Can't go wrong with TES. I actually added the "Sci-fi / Other" choice because I needed a category for Deus Ex. ;-)

Hmm, I'm not even sure what category it would fall under... fantasy <something>, I guess. Anyway, I love the settings from games such as victor vran/van helsing/grim dawn etc. - sooo yeah, I'll vote for "I care far more about the game genre than its setting/location", since the common factor of them is the ARPG genre :p

Sounds like, "Fantasy, but neither anime nor medieval." But yes, if you'll play an ARPG in any setting (anime, superhero, Old West), then it would seem that setting doesn't matter as long as it's an ARPG.

Yeah, I'd kinda vote for both if possible. I'm willing to give most ARPGs a shot with the exception of superhero themes (those just don't appeal to me, no matter the genre :P )

While I don't really care about the setting/location/whatever of a game and value its gameplay and how fun it is instead, I'd say that games that follow a Lovecraftian horror theme and the settings that go with it intrigue me quite a lot more than usual.

Actually,I don't really like Sword&Sorcery games because there're too many of them.Since I played Fallout,I found that post-apocalyptic games is very attractive.By the way, cyberpunk is really cool:)

I care more for story than anything! Setting is further down on the list of what I want in a game! I like a range of games... the walking dead, the last of us, Wolfenstein, beyond two souls, Undertale etc. They all range in place so it's hard to pick a favourite setting :o
