Nope, that's not old school and even not a "classic" jrpg. To someone unfamiliar to the genre may seems too confusionary (event to a jrpg addict to be honest).
On steam there are Breath of Death and Chuthulu Saves the World which are quite classic and old style, while on GoG he can find Septerra Core and Anachronox which are very good.

+1 I still own my original physical CD-Rom version of Septerra Core that first came out in October 31, 1999, and it is an very good game, the game play is similar to some of the Final Fantasy games. The leading character designer and artist was an Manga/Manhwa artist. When I first bought Septerra Core I also bought Shogo: Mobile Armor Division at Walmart at the computer game and video game section back in 1999, but that was way before the days of Steam. Thankfully the GoG version of Septerra Core is prepatched, because with my old copy of Septerra Core I had to download the patches and the fan patch separate and burn the patches on an CDR so that i wont have to re download the patches, but my copy was from the back in 1999.
On Playstation (PS1)and Sega I was an fan of the Lunar: Silver Star Story series which was an true JRPG classic.
^_^
The Lunar: Silver Star Story series is an truly high;y recommended classic JRPG, also my brother plays it all the time.
I believe there is an iOS port for Lunar: Silver Star Story.

I've enjoyed a lot the Phanstasy Star series for the Sega Genesis, so pick up an emulator and give these a try if you're curious about JRPGs.
The first 5 Final Fantasy games are also a great intro to "traditional" JRPGs, so if you have a playstation you'll likely find those on some cheap collection and try them out.

For PC? Last Remnant is a pretty good game, you can also try this : http://store.steampowered.com/sub/8848/
Is on sale right now, and in spite of beign an indie game is quite fun and long.

For Steam: You could try the demo of Penny Arcade 3 and Carpe Fulgar games (Recettear, Fortune Summoners and Chantelise).
Another good installment is The Last Remnant, made by Square Enix.
For VGs: I recommend Phantasy Star IV, Dragon Quest VIII (PS2), Dragon Quests remakes for NDS, Final Fantasy I to X, Suidoken, Legend of Legaia.

The Last Remnant is far below J-RPG standart IMO.

It was also only published by SE, they picked it up after someone else dropped it. How else do exxplain a turn based RPG from them using the Unreal Engine.

"How else do exxplain a turn based RPG from them using the Unreal Engine."
Microsoft. They wanted the 360 to do better than the original Xbox in Japan so they contacted some devs, Mistwalker and Tri-Ace for example, to make exclusive titles for them using the unreal engine. Of course They helped fund the games if it was used made with the Unreal Engine.

But, Lost Odyssey actually turned out extremely well by Mistwalker and was, I believe, the only great JRPG on 360 (though the pickings are slim to begin with). I really wanted to like The Last Remnant, but it just seems... off. That's the best way to describe it. I'll keep trying to make my stance change.

Oh, I wasn't accusing you of that! I suppose my response was phrased as such, sorry! Definitely one of the best ones. It seems that there has been a huge departure from turn-based JRPGs with instanced battles. Sad, that's my favorite.

Final Fantasy 3, SNES. You have GOT to play this. Really :)
"The game was known as Final Fantasy III when it was first released in North America, as the original Final Fantasy III had not been released outside of Japan at the time."
Read the bit under "Reception" to see why I say - PLAY THIS.
One significant snippet of that bit - However, they referred to the game's storyline as its "... most unique aspect", citing its large cast of characters, "nearly all of whom receive a great deal of development", and the "surprisingly large number of real world issues, the vast majority of which have not been addressed by any RPG before or since, ranging from teen pregnancy to suicide". Overall, RPGamer regarded the game as an "epic masterpiece" and "truly one of the greatest games ever created".
If you like character development, storyline, and engaging, relatable, realistic themes, you will really enjoy this experience, as I did too.

Actually, it's Final Fantasy VI, aka Final Fantasy III.

well, i have the game for PSN. I just had to download it from the PSN and it works. The vita does everything.
The game was cheap a while ago and i bought it for like 2 euro. What impressed me was how smooth the graphics were for the Vita, they look great on that screen! However i never had a PS1 so i don't know how good the original were. I'm probably going to buy a lot of PS1 games on the PSN so i can run them on vita.
On my TV screen (using my PS3) they look horrible, they feel "distended" and you get to see how bad the original resolution is. I was really impressed on how good it worked on the vita screen.

Yeah, I think FM3 looks best, But I didnt see Front Mission 5, I must check it out. Also I used to play it on Playstation, but didnt complete, because I lost my PS. But now im playing it on emulator. Im almost at Lukav, a fight with him. I hope its not almost end of the game. I like Jose. Also I like when that guy with long hairs says something ( i dont remember his name right now), and Kazuki always say: shut up! :D

Pretty much my standard for any handheld RPG at this point.

Actually liked Persona 3 and 4 better, defintely among my favorite games. Extra points for Legend of Dragoon and Xenogears.
I'd like to add Legend of Mana to the list, along with Brave Fencer Musashi, though both are more action oriented.

You can still buy Final Fantasy VII for PC from the Square Enix store.

If you're handy with the good ol' emulators or have an old PS1 lying around somewhere, continue your Chrono journey with Chrono Cross.
The Grandia series was really cool, I especially loved playing Grandia II on my old Dreamcast (R.I.P)...
For REALLY old school RPGs, in my opinion you're better off with western developed titles like the Ultima games as old JRPGs tend to be intensely grind-heavy and lack much player input or space to literally Play a Role, but maybe you're into the grind - like I said, that's just my opinion.
However, someone mentioned Breath of Death VII and Cthulu Saves The World which are in a mega-cheap double pack on Steam. They manage to play just like the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest of old, while adding a tonne of spoof humour which makes the experience a little more bearable for my personal taste.

The entire Suikoden series is amazing, especially five and three which are my favorites. Also the Tales series are all really good games save for a couple (Tales of Abyss, Tales of Symphonia, ect: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tales_(series) ). Legend of Mana is probably still my favorite game, and you can't go wrong with Grandia 1 (very fun game) and Grandia 2 (amazing classic), 3 was meh. Lastly, the Breath of Fire games are all super favorites and are very similar to Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger in a lot of ways, give them a try!
Shortlist:
Tales Series http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tales_(series) |
Suikoden 1-5 |
Legend of Mana |
Grandia 1 & 4 |
Breath of Fire 1-4 |

Digital Devil Saga - Probably my fave turnbased PS2 RPG.
Golden Sun - GBA, my fave handheld series.
Definitely play the first, then it's sequel "The Lost Age". Though I wasn't very impressed with the third game, for DS. STILL MANDATORY!
FYI the OP asked for oldschool turnbased.
That severely limits my choices to several 10/10 titles. :D

Golden Sun series is a MUST. Dark Dawn was a bit disappointing for those that had waited years and years and years for a third one, but I still bought it immediately regardless.

I've recently started playing Chrono Trigger and it's pretty amazing. As a kid I've only played some Metroid stuff and lots of Mario so I'm not very familiar with that kind of RPGs. Any suggestions? What are your favorites and what do you recommend I should start with?
