Because the original score/soundtrack is an integral part of the experience with the game?

Once you've completed Dark Souls a fair few times, its nice to just rock out to your own music while you invade people.

Yeah I agree completely, but in some games such as tf2 or other ones you've already completed and want to speedrun/get achievments/any other kind of challenge for it out there, sometimes you just wanna listen to some of your own songs. Having a program included in steam for that might be awesome, so you don't have to ctrl+esc or something to get to desktop and play music.

But I can listen music using itunes without this feature, the only complain is to change not randomly the music I have to minimize the game. And about listening music while playing, sometimes when I play Minecraft I listen some music, but practically never when playing Steam games, but with 5.1/7.1 headsets you can listen music and voices in games, since sound goes from different channels, I tried in many games.
They could also add an equalizer to this Steam feature, but I will have to disable the Windows one if I would plan to use the Steam one.

I'm hoping they include listening to internet radios such as Pandora afterwards.

Will this only be avaliable for Big Picture?
I don't like using that thing...

First sentence in the group overview....
"Steam Music will soon be in limited beta as a feature of SteamOS and Big Picture mode, with a desktop interface to follow."

This would be nice if it were on normal Steam interface too, I don't use the Big Picture too, I don't have any reason to opening first Big Picture to scroll to my games after to find the one I need to play, and to exit the same, instead of just clicking on the game directly.

Hahahah imagine if people could actually read before asking stupid questions, I honestly can't

Problem with iTunes is, correct me if I'm wrong, you need an iTunes device to use it. If not, then the library option has never worked for me.

Don't really see the point of it as I'd rather use an external program. If Steam starts selling music, it would have to be DRM-free and you should be able to choose the file format/codec. Otherwise it's just another crappy online music store.

I hope for integrated streaming platform, like Spotify or whatever, but ACTUALLY ACCESSIBLE TO ME. IMAGINE IF THEY WOULD ACTUALLY LET ME PAY FOR LISTENING TO MUSIC INSTEAD OF PIRATING.

Can't you just create a Spotify account using a proxy and then use it? That used to work back in the early days.

I can, but I don't want to do it like that. To go out of my way to give them money? lol no

Look, you and I can have a higher opinion of Valve than of Microsoft and Sony, but they're playing the same game: trying to conquer your living room. Valve are nicer and apparenly less greedy and value openness and have nice sales and... so on. But still. They want to become your gateway to entertainment, obviously including music, movies and shows.

Not sure why steam bothered with this feature. Maybe it's directed on their steam machines this time. I can definitely stream my music from one pc to another with stardock acoustic bridge, or steam's own streaming feature.
I can also definitely use my own music player to maintain my library, shuffle it and mix how loud it is with additional dsp effects added.

We'll i'm in beta, gonna test it out.
Edit: To start music, you can find it in library in Big Picture mode.
Quality is great. It's fast. UI is simple and easy.
It seems really good. Can't wait for dekstop interface.
Edit 2:
Guys, go http://steamcommunity.com/groups/steammusic/discussions and recommend them which features you want, most of you wanted some streaming/radio stuff, they said they're looking into it, it's just that they don't know which services to use. So yeah, post it there. :D
Edit 3:
If you're not invited into the beta, you can try this:
"just launch Steam with the -steamos parameter and you're good to go" - xarabas
