Well, apparently Capcom and a studio created by the people behind Metroid Prime, called Armature where working on a FPS trilogy based on Megaman circa 2010, but the project was cancelled when Inafune left Capcom.

But today video footage, screenshots and pretty much info about the project has seen the light. Look at:

HERE

The game supposedly were ment to implement some typical mechanics of classic megaman games, like the powers taken from the bosses and the enemies were going to be weak againts certain weapons.

The trilogy would culminate with you playing as Zero with the mission to destroy an Overpowered megaman.

What do you think about all this?

In my opinion it would have been a complete disaster for the megaman franchise, turning it into the stereotypical FPS nowadays.

EDIT: Well, maybe because the game was in GOOD hands it wouldn't be THAT bad, even good, but for the little I can see in the videos (I am indeed aware that its only a game at early states of development) the game would get repetitive really fast- maybe this would change with the different mechanics that come with the bosses weapons.
But maybe this reaction comes from my Nontalgia glasses being on.

But well, guess we'll never know if this may have been the game all the fans of the saga where waiting for or if it was ment to be a disaster (or simply Mediocre).

Metoid Prime was awesome... sad this was cancelled. If Armature did as good of a job as they did with Metroid this could have been great.

Seriously, what could have been so disastrous about having critically acclaimed developers from Retro Studios developing this when they had the grace of Inafune to work on it and it was going to have you fight Mega Man X in 3D as Zero? They have had prior experience with the Metroid Prime Trilogy and went on to develop the ports for the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection AND will be developing the new Batman Arkham Origins Blackgate.

And this also now makes 4 awesome-looking Megaman projects that have been cancelled since 2009, the others being Rockman Online, Megaman Legends 3 and Megaman Universe. (Not including the one refuted by Capcom earlier this year)

idk man, I can trust the developers because they did a very good job with Prime, and I really liked that trilogy, but somewhat i'm not convinced by the little I can see in the videos (YES I KNOW ITS ONLY A PROTOTYPE BUT, STILL...)

I can see your point there. Terrible Iphone ports aren't what capcom should be doing with the series

This Megaman FPS looks like awesome, reminds me of Hard Reset. I love all the megaman - except when they made Megaman a fat slob in Street Fighter x Tekken.

Yeah, because all the video game world needs now is yet another FPS game with a theme tacked on to it to try and pass it off as unique.

Developers have no good ideas left.

What if this is a strategy from Capcom to see if this is what the fans want safely and if the fans consider it Awesome and Great they will announce it for real??

It is kind of suspicious that this information is coming out now of all times. Who knows. I just want there to be a legitimate new Mega Man game (and preferably NOT one like 9, 10 or x Street Fighter. I'd much rather have Mega Man 8's graphics style if we have to have a Mega Man 11 or something similar)

It's been three years since this was in development (supposedly) and the last Mega Man project that was still in progress when Inafune left (Rockman Online) was officially canned less than a month ago.

I think it has something to do with Mirror's Edge on the daily sale today. Imagine Megaman parkour-ing, that would be awesome.

Eh, basically an attempt to cash in off the "Mega Man" brand. If it's good but dramatically different, why not set it up as new IP?

^Assuming a full blown 3D first-person shooter is cheaper and easier to make than a retro 8 bit sidescroller.

Why any other developer hasn't thought about this brilliant idea before?!

I guess all Prince of Persia games were a cash-in too?

Agreed. Interesting game, but from what the videos show, it's not "Mega Man" -- release it as something else and it might be cool.

[edit]
I think what I dislike most about it is the artistic style.
For those arguing Metroid Prime, Metroid makes sense -- it's a gritty sci-fi world akin to the Alien universe
Mega Man is cartoonish. If the visual style of the game was a little more TF2-esque, it might make sense. If they continued on the path of the hard sci-fi style that's shown, it would just feel all kinds of wrong.
(And somewhere in between, there is Halo's visual style (disclaimer: I only significantly played the first Halo).)
Contrast: Mega Man style vs. Metroid style -- at first glance, not that different, but on closer inspection, a huge stylistic difference.

You're thinking of the Megaman world, this would have taken place in the Megaman X world, you know, the one where everything pretty much went to shit really fast. The one that includes X, Zero, and Axl.

This actually looks pretty decent, especially considering it's very early in development. All of the art assets probably were not implemented (or even created) yet. Even if it kept to a relatively gritty style (though I still think Mega Man's appearance could be improved to make him more recognizable), I would have been ok with it. It would just be a different take on the franchise.

Even though some people here are like "WOW THIS LOOKS SO COOL" I bet some of the same people would of been like "I just want Megaman Legends 3".

Looked at the videos and didn't read the articles. It looks cool, but the enemy rushing attack seemed like something you'd be using a lot.

Maybe I should start playing Legends.

If it was the same folks that made the Metroid Prime series, than it most likely would have been pretty good. For something so drastic a change, the Prime series was pretty good, though the final one was a bit meh due to the motion controls. (Aiming with the wiimote was horrible.)
