You might want to take a look at some screenshots from the official Magic The Gathering Online game first (or download it, you can play for free with a few decks). I tried it not that long ago and I couldn't believe it was the same client they released like 10 years ago lol.
I can't remember what it was called but I used to play Magic online with a popular third party software designed for ccg. You could download the entire card collection (people had scanned and uploaded them) and build your own deck for free. I'll try to see if I can find it.
EDIT: found it, it's called Magic Workstation. You can find it and the instructions to download the card database here.
Not sure about Duels of the Planewalkers, it's not the real thing in the sense that not all cards/mechanics are included as far as I can tell. Also I believe the new edition is about to be released...
Finally, never heard of Hex so can't help you there.

I like MTG and played when it was still in type 1. I'd really like to make a comeback but the cards are quite expensive now and isn't within my budget so I'm opting for the PC version too. BUT I'd recommend for you to wait for MTG 2014...That's what I'm doing. they dont carry on the deck you have in the previous version so it's better to wait...
I believe the MTG 2014 would be released by winter.
I checked out HEX and it's not really a card game.
if you want a card game.
try UNLIGHT... it's only available in Yahoo.jp... it had an english version before but was removed.

Depends on what Magic your talking about. Duels of the Planewalkers is cut in some ways. It doesn't even let you create your own decks. There a few free online Magic games though, like cockatrice (which was shut down by hasbro, take a look at woogerworks for an alternative server).

There is the actual, legit, Magic The Gathering Online game with all the cards and everything. But the client they use is the same the released like a decade ago, it's not even funny at this point. I'm not sure why they haven't updated all that and provided us with a sweet interface, they're probably more interested in milking it with the Duels of The Planewalkers bs...

Good day SG community, I'll get right to it: I've been wanting to play a digital card game for a while now. I know Magic the Gathering is a pretty popular one (in real life and for PC). I also discovered Hex not too long ago. Now for those of you that have deeper knowledge on this subject which do you think I should get ? I mean I know one is in development and is a shot in the dark, but being free to play it will most likely see new content every now and then which is good. On the other hand, how polished is MTG ? Do the devs crush bugs or do they just move on to the next game and don't listen to the fans ? In any case, let me know what you think :D
