White Square Around Avatar Cuts Avatar Image

Heya!

I'm just wondering why the white square around our avatars on the left of a post actually cuts into our image?

If they wanted a white border, couldn't they have either shrunken the image further, or placed the border on the OUTSIDE of our image?
