So about 1 hour ago, i get a friend request from this random guy . I usually accept friend invites cause i have Steamtrades.com offers. this user send a message saying "i saw ur post and i have a csgo knife up for trade on my other account, for some of your games". then he sends me a link of gyazo saying "a picture of my knife". Me really thinking it was a gyazo(The Easiest Way to Capture Your Screen;pretty much a screenshot app) link. i click on it and yeah it was a link disguise, and didn't send me to gyazo. and just randomly downloaded something. i clicked on it but windows defender didn't let me open it. Then when the message popped out, then i got scared lol. Why did i try to open it no clue cause im stupid and wasn't thinking. i clicked on his profile, and saw he was lv 0 and 1 game. i blocked him and reported him. but i still don't know what i downloaded and if it infected my comp. I scanned with malwarebytes, and nothing came up of malware. i don't have a antivirus program except windows defender, and i know that isn't antivirus but something is something am i right lol. Just a heads up if someone is using steamtrades or gets a message like that in steam, just don't click on links guys its unsafe and risky.

You downloaded a scr file, thinking it was an image, didn't you ?
It is a trojan.

If you didn't execute it, you should be ok.
Beside your thread, there are free anti-virus if you don't want to buy one (and want one legally).

scr files aren't necesarily trojans, though.

Indeed, you are right.
It is just that the Steam related ones i got were, so i answered that.

This is unfortunately a newer scam that is starting to become common. Need to always check stuff like user accounts before clicking any links.

Just a warning, you can't include their profile link, as it comes under Calling Out.

Had same thing today. Message from a guy stating picture of a knife. I typed the link into my browser with noscript on where it subsequently wanted to dl/save a .scr file, which is basically an .exe. I reported the guy to steam. He had a few games in his list and 1 VAC ban on his account from a few days ago. I suspect someone's hijacked his account.

Yeah, that is what the exploit is for, account hijacking.

oh yeah i had some guy link me to an scr file a while back. i just said not interested but i guess i should have tried to report it. not sure if i mentioned that the link was to a screensaver file. do some browsers actually just download (or worse, download and run) scr files? firefox was just like "hey what do you want to do with this scr file" and i said cancel -- lcds don't need screensavers and i know dudes put bad stuff in them.

I believe listing his account is against the rules. Otherwise hope you come out ok and weren't infected! :)

You should use something that isn't Windows Defender. At this point anything is a step up, even the crappy free ones. I like Bitdefender Free though.

As for the image, your browser should have settings to where you click on something and it asks you what you want to do with it. Save as, which direction, which program to download/open it with...best not to use settings that do the same thing with every file like auto download to Downloads.

Edit: Also, that guy with a duck avatar on your comments randomly added me too. I marked him as a bot and blocked since he has no business from anywhere with me and he was offline for 3 days at the time. Might be your guy's main account.

If you are really scared (because you should) download any trial version of antivirus and scan your system, but dont forget to update antivirus signatures before scanning. You may use Kaspersky, ESET Nod32, BitDefender, Norton, AVG or Avast (this one is free).

Why would he need to change passwords?

Because it probably just hijacked his Steam account. I know there's already a scam like that going around under the guise of being a giveaway.

First thing he should've done is changed his passwords. Other people on this site have had the same thing happen and the downloaded program is what steals the log in info.

Why aren't you using something better? Download the free malwarebytes and Avast! and you'll be much better off.

"...on my other account,"

To me these four words just screamed this is a scam. I'm surprised you went any further than that. If they wanted to trade on their other account then they would have given you a friend request via that account. When multiple accounts are in play then a number of scams are possible.
