EDIT: Thanks for all the nice wishes and support! Still haven't found out if my application was accepted, but keep your fingers crossed for me! All giveaways have now ended. A couple of the free keys remain unclaimed so I will save them for my next big set of giveaways :) Have fun everyone!

About 9 years ago I met a kind and beautiful Slovenian girl and we fell in love. Since then I’ve moved to Slovenia, married her and had two kids. Recently, since the outcome of the EU referendum in the UK, I started to worry about losing the benefits of being an EU citizen. So I thought it would be wise to apply for Slovenian citizenship. I know it’s going to take a number of years before Britain actually leaves the EU, but why wait. Btw, I voted to STAY, obviously!

So the whole process of applying for Slovenian citizenship is, frankly, a pain in the arse! There are a tonne of forms to fill out, documents to submit and it’s expensive! The hardest part by far, however, is the requirement that you have to pass a Slovenian language test. It’s a difficult language to learn and I’ve never been to any lessons. Everything I know, I’ve picked up from speaking to others, watching TV and listening to the radio. I can hold a conversation but I make a lot of mistakes and I don’t know much of the grammar, so naturally I was very nervous about taking the test. Well, long story short, and to my surprise, I PASSED! And so, to the point of this post; I’ve yet to find out if my application will be accepted, but I was so happy about passing the test that I wanted to share that happiness with you guys :)

So here are the games! There’s not a lot, but hopefully you can all find at least one game you’d like to add to your collection :)

In each giveaway, I’ve written an interesting fact about Slovenia and posed a question. The first person to guess the answer correctly wins a key for an ungiftable game. If I have multiple keys for any of the games they will go to the next correct answer.

The free games available in each GA are written next to the giveaway game, in brackets. Only unedited answers will be accepted and only one answer per person.

Two questions. Do you think applying for UK citizenship is easier? Don't you have a safer bet to get (Slovenian) citizenship as someone who's married to their citizen for couple of years now?

Anyway, GZ!

Thank you! To be honest I have no idea what the process is like in the UK. If I had to guess I would say it's probably easier. England is a lot more diverse than Slovenia. In Slovenia I almost got the feeling that they really don't want any new citizens, so they make the whole process as complicated as possible! :D Being married helps, but that basically just lets you apply sooner than others. You still have to submit all the same documents.

I smell a trace of sarcasm from your last sentence... but I was just trying to say it's probably harder to get British citizenship for someone from outside commonwealth or EU, than it is for him to get a Slovenian one. He just never had to try that so he thinks this is hard.

I have no intention of asking for any of them, but thanks for the info nevertheless. Happy 3-chimney factory day!

People will just have to slow down in their replies to your GAs Bauer, perhaps give them an hour or so and then use a raffle ticket to select winners for the extra GAs rather than choose the first 2 or correct answer :)

Yeah Britain is looking bad at the moment. I have some friends here in Ireland that will have to get citizenship, and the price is ridiculous, so I imagine it was about the same amount for you. Hopefully won't be long for you to find out

Hi there well done on passing the test.
I just had a question: What benefits will the UK citizens living in EU countries loose when UK activates the leave option ? (hope i made my self clear enough ^^)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Thank you! Some have gone as far as warning that expats will no longer be able to live in other EU countries. But I think that's an exaggeration. I'm more worried about losing access to things like EU health insurance. That's helped me out in the past! Tbh, no-one really knows until Britain starts the whole process properly.

I agree with your assessment and thanks for the explanation, you put it in a much more eloquent manner than I could. That pretty much sums it up :)

Best of luck with the application. Do you get to keep dual citizenship or will you have to renounce your UK citizenship?

Our passport office in Ireland was inundated with queries from the UK and NI in the weeks after the Brexit result with people panicking and wondering if they could apply for an Irish passport. I think it has died down now, but in a case such as your own, where you have tangible ties to Slovenia, it's a good idea to cement your residency status and I also imagine you'll have no problem being accepted.

Permalink

Thank you. I hope not. I made sure before applying that I wouldn't need to renounce my UK citizenship. Would be a shame to lose that! I think it's just a smart move. Well, I hope it is :)

Whaaaat? Voting for songs based on actual merit and not just for your neighbours? I'm not sure you know how to Eurovision :D

Permalink

Lol, I know, crazy right! England never gets friendly neighbour votes so we don't have to play by those rules ;)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That's true. It's rare that anyone would vote for the UK here in Ireland, and yet you guys always seem to give us what we refer to as "the guilt vote", despite all our entries being awful for the last while. It's a bit sad, really. I voted for Bonnie Tyler because she's class :)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Haha, "the guilt vote". I like that. I will say that Ireland tends to be more consistent with the quality generally, but England has had some reasonable songs over the last few years (apart from Electro Velvet) and in reality we probably deserved more points than we got. That's probably why a lot of people in England see the whole competition as a bit of a joke :) Probably the same in Ireland.

Why you just don't want to return in the UK with your family?

Permalink

Too many ties here. My wife has a good job here (a school teacher), we've bought a flat here etc I think it would actually be a lot harder to move and settle over in the UK than it would be to stay here.
