I still have a - rep from a scammer who claimed he never traded with me after stealing my stuff
I've contacted support 8 months ago and still no response
Is It fair that my rep is permanently scarred because I reported a scammer?

Ah! It's a small world after all, I got scammed by the same guy about 1 year ago, when I tried to leave negative rep he retaliated with another -rep and said that I had to remove mine for him to remove his . Since my loss in the scam was pretty low I valued the rep more and accepted the extortion.
Anyway, I even tried to persuade him (he said to be a teenager at the time) to stop scamming and to value morality more, it seems my paternal advice wasn't received.
I have him still in my friendlist, it's a shame steam trade bans aren't permanent (he had a trade ban red text back then).

Life is kinda fair, everyone gets fucked generally, unless they are the very few lucky people born into wealth or power lol For most of us we all get fucked pretty evenly.

First of all, they should remove unreasonable -rep comments fast rather than letting people wait for an eternity. :P

They need a separate support category for false reps, maybe a public tribunal with majority ruling if manpower is an issue.

Banning a user and removing rep are two different issues. They don't just remove all the feedback the user made, they look at proof and everything before feedback is removed. People can be a dick (I should know given my own false -Rep), but they can also leave real rep that was for a legitimate reason.

I'm not saying it instantly erases them, just there should be a system in place where false -reps are either publicly judged or a separate ticket for moderation

From what I've read, only a couple of SG staff have the authority to do this and neither are available at the moment.

well shit, looks like they need more staff!
I'd love to become a moderator, I'd even do some of the ticketing!
but I'd bet they could get better than me so I'm gonna just ask for some help!

Publicly judged won't happen.

It will only be done by support. With the added issues that only the highest ranked members can respond to false trade feedback tickets, judging them can take a while, they often don't count against traders with good feedback since they are clearly fake or from scammers, and the support members having more pressing problems to deal with, such tickets often take too long.

Be happy that the offender in your case at least got perma banned, so they won't do it to others. The case with mine currently has them roaming free and able to continue bullshit on other users. His most recent revenge for me ignoring his ref links to to sign me up for as much spam as possible. Granted, it might not be him, but I haven't dealt with any other immature ****s in months.

i always get stuck on the polls with conflicting answers..

Should -Reps Persist even when the repping party is banned?

Yes. most generally yes unless it was specifically related to trade scamming and falsely rep'n others

No. Not if it were do to the above mentioned falsely rep'n and scamming scenario.

but like ppl said the sites just understaffed for getting around to something that most people already know to just overlook. it's quite clear in this instance so it really should not effect you any differently.

how about -reps towards all the players that reported him are removed?
that'd generally work because usually you wont report someone you scammed.
I guess more staff is the best answer, maybe they should allow you to donate to steam gifts in order to get giveaway points!
then they could get staff and actually pay them (small amounts but it'd make it worth it)

it could be banned for any reason other than scamming, so the rep could be correct and not faked.

anyway, who cares about -1 or -10 rep? if people you trade with is intelligent enough, they will do proper research and not stick to the -rep number alone.
opening your feedback takes 15 seconds and checking what that guy says is enough to discard it.

yeah, but some asshats disregard people if they have -rep
also, there needs to be SOME way to appeal a -rep, I mean someone could get scammed a lot and end up with more - than + rep and he'd have no way to redeem his account. (doubtful but it COULD happen)

it already happens. new user => gets scammed on first try => ends up with 0/-1 => 90% of all traders don't want to trade with him.

Even though I agree, it is easier to say this when not trading a lot and/or not having a fake -rep.

i rarely trade, but i check all the people before and read the last comments they have in their feedback.

I was talking -among others- about the psychological effect it can have, too. Anything else is part of common sense as you said and I agree. Even though common sense is not so ..common.

Yes, the negative trade feedback should persist as the reason for the ban can be anything unrelated to the banned users trading activity. Even if it is related it is still possible that while all other negative feedbacks have been wrong this single one could be correct. So people should see it and make their own judgement. If there are people which will avoid trading with you because of this they aren't worth the time often anyway.

Other than that he did not give you negative feedback because you reported him. You got it because you "attacked" him (probably justified) with a negative feedback on your own. Is it fair? No, it isn't but it was a reaction to your action. Other than that you may ask yourself why you did try trading with him in the first place. At the moment of your trade the user had already 8! negative feedbacks and yet you still trusted him. Or was there another reason you just wanted to blindly trust him?

So in summary. Just accept the negative trade feedback and let people make their own judgement.

How did he "attack" him? By writing that he was scammed? :/

Yes. It is not the best word. I know that hence the usage of "". It was justified, it was the right thing to do in order to warn others but it is more then likely he would not have gained his negative feedback if he did not write the message on the users trade feedback site. It is just me being pendantic. Like I said I think he did the right thing (under the assumption it happened like described there).
