I don't play any of the CS games, but I know this will be big news for a lot of people. CS:GO will turn into Counter Strike 2 with a free upgrade this summer. Valve has sent out invites for a test cycle to a limited amount of CS:GO players today, so if you play CS:GO keep your eyes out for it.

Here's the FAQ for the test.

You can find more info about the upcoming CS2 on the website.

Here's a few videos that showcase what's coming.

Hmm, thankful they didn't devalue my CSGO inventory. Now I don't need to immediately dump it.

Valve for sure wouldn't devalue, they must be making fortunes. I'd be more concerned about EU making anti lootbox laws.

That volumetric smoke looks cool. It's nice when graphical updates actually add tactics to the gameplay

what did grind my gears on cs:go and was my main reason to leave for good is the reload animation. doesn't matter if you have one bullet on the chamber or burnt the last one leaving the gun open, if you reload, the one will manipulate the bold or charging handle in all circunstances. you can say this is there because balance, timing and arcade gameplay... but for me that's straight dumbness and childish in a game with realistically looking guns. i hope they bring a fix for this, if they care this issue at all.

Probably the same reason why in movies everyone always "cocks" the gun even though nothing like that is even remotely needed in anything but a revolver.

As a person with 3k hours wasted on the previous one: whatever.
If this came out a couple of years ago them maybe it would have been worth a try

Meh Source 2 engine has been out for what, 8 years now? It's not that impressive looking anymore. They should have capitalized on it when it first came out and began porting all their older games to Source 2. I'm hoping they're working on a Source 3 engine. Oh wait I mean Source 2 ep. 1.

It's an e-sports title... they can't just throw massive upgrades on it and change things that quickly, without potentially ruining the community. Just look at StarCraft 2 and it's launch. It wasn't well received at first, as it didn't run as well as the ancient original game and didn't have the same balance. And even to this day, people are discussing which game is the best out of the two. That's not ideal.

Now, all these years later hardware has advanced and most players has good headroom to run CS, so that won't be as much of a factor. Even considering that though, it's still a big gamble to do something like this regardless. Keep in mind that CS:GO regularly hits concurrent numbers of a million+ players. It's a massive game. If they mess it up somehow, that's a big loss of for Vavle.

It's no wonder they kept most of the changes to graphical and netcode improvements, and left the e-sports maps completely unchanged. Anything else would have had the community treating it like it was Counter-Strike: Source 2.

You're probably right. I saw some videos on youtube where they remade CS maps using Unreal 5 and it looked more like a Call of Duty game than CS.

Now if only a generic gamer who has a life outside the PC could also enjoy this.
I've tried to enjoy CS numerous times. Started with 1.6 I think. GO went a bit smoother but overall it's really no pleasure to play when almost everyone in the game has about billion hours and hasn't seen daylight since 1987. Add kids screaming, hackers (in free version at least), Russians blasting hardbass through their mic and you have yourself toxic and overall unpleasant gaming experience.

Of course updates look cool and good to see Valve at work. Maybe I'll try it at some point when I get my main PC in place. I have a feeling with Stteamdeck I would have even more horrible experience playing the game
