i've been looking into more alan moore works, also i started the dark knight returns but i can't stand the illustrations in that, i'll try lost girls though

For literary comics, you can't do better than Gaiman's Sandman. Maus is up there, too, if you like history and/or anthropomorphism.
If you're looking for something that's smart and gritty, you'll like Warren Ellis. Among Ellis' works, I recommend Transmetropolitan and Global Frequency above the rest. Also great but perhaps less relevant: FreakAngels (available free online) and The Authority.
Also of note: Garth Ennis' Preacher. Grant Morrison's The Invisibles. Alan Moore is of course a genius, but he's already been recommended throughout this thread.
