Why is a mushroom named "toad" and a monkey named "donkey"?

for the latter one, Miyamoto said he thought that sonkey meant stupid

Toad is short for Toadstool, other word for mushroom. I guess one of these days he'll get a twin named Stool.

Speaking of toadstools, Princess Peach was originally known as Princess Toadstool if memory serves correct.

Also, a reason why Mario and Donkey Kong were created is because Nintendo needed them for a game at the time (Donkey Kong) and weren't able to get a license for characters from Popeye. If they had, Donkey Kong might have been called Popeye whatever and instead of Donkey Kong, Mario, and Princess Peach, you would have had Brutus, Popeye, and Olive Oyl respectively. Imagine that.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I think that was only outside of Japan. In Japan she was known as Peach all along.

I have no idea but regional differences like that are certainly possible.

from what I can read, the US renamed her and it's only in SM64 that "Peach" came to light.

Google told me that this is the color peach.

The color peach seems to be something orange/pinkish but with low saturation

To me Daisy looks like a combination of yellow and orange with a lot of saturation http://www.mariowiki.com/Princess_Daisy . Princess Peach is indeed pink.

Conclusion: Princess Peach and Princess Daisy have both the same right to describe their own colour as "peach", but would be both wrong.
