To add to that, Microsoft purchased Skype in 2011, and gradually shifted over to using it as their messaging service.
Strangely, I think Yahoo Messenger is still around. Then again, Yahoo has a weird way of letting its services kick around well after most people've lost interest in them. Then again, so long as it remains integrated with their mail client, I suppose it's really more just a secondary front-end to another service.

There was only ever 1 reason to use Yahoo Messenger. Adult Webcam rooms.

Well, actually since a few months that's in-name-only since they were bought out by Verizon, but they'd been ruining their own business for about a decade before that, and especially since 2012, with a string of unstable leadership and dodgy acquisitions.

i liked yahoo, with the ability to draw together n the other stupid little things, it was nice. but after having icq\skype\aim\etc etc it started getting ridiculous for me to have them all at once

You really only ever needed Trillian or a similar IM-combining service, though. I mean, Trillian no longer supports Skype, so you'd need that now as well- but unless you're using more niche (or gaming related [eg, Discord, Steam] ) messaging services, it (along with most of the alternative services to it) has always covered all the major IM/chat services available at any point since its release.

Trillian was actually lower demand than many of the primary clients it integrated, especially as other clients implemented ads well before it did. Meebo was super convenient for its online login function, making it a great option if you use public, school, or work computers a lot.
These days I really just chat via Steam chat and texting, though. Even among my friends, they seem to mostly stick exclusively to gaming chat services and phone-based services that integrate into texting.
Kinda sad, knowing that we're leaving the days of early digital wonder- of being part of such a large collective of people discovering a whole new realm of communication together- behind, in favor for streamlined, taken-for-granted, less focused options.
I guess the next time we'll really get a sense of wonder from communication development is when we develop virtual reality communications, holo-communications, or teleportation. :P
Well, gaming is in the same position- every DOS-era game used to be a wonder, and with new genre variants and design concepts popping up on a regular basis, Now, it feels like we mostly just hold out for games that are especially polished or offer minor tweaks to existing concepts or technological improvements. The wonder of encountering dying of dysentry while crunching numbers upon the scorched earth within the dungeons of Persia is gone.. :'(
Then again, other than the graceful aging of classic isometric JRPGs, most early games suffered from abysmally clunky mechanics or awkwardly implemented graphics, so I can't say I miss the actual games all that much, nostalgic elements aside. :P

AIM stole my custom away message for when playing a game. I still remember the time I created it too. I was playing Rampage World Tour on my cousins' Windows 98 computer.
