Is it worth it? My friends keep telling me to try it, but only with a controller on PC (Luckily the same friends gave me a pc controller).

How is it? I've been kind of interested in the series but haven't had a real reason to go buy it, but I get extra money in a couple months and want to know if it would be a good buy

Have you tried checking the internet for reviews or gameplay videos? I heard they have those on that there internet.

I prefer more personal opinions from a game community rather than a big game reviewer.

It's fun, but seriously overrated. However, I think just seing for yourself makes it already worth your buy.

It's one of the few games I consider a masterpiece :D
The gameplay is fantastic, the battle mechanics are perfect and many games today are made based on it. Mashing buttons won't help you at all, even against the first enemies. You'll actually have to time your attacks and read your opponent's movements.
Boss battles are brutal, sometimes you'll try again and again, die a million times, give up, throw your controller away just to come back after 5 minutes and try one more time.
PvP is hella fun, even tho I like the PvP in dark souls 2 better than the first.
The story is kinda cryptic, it leaves a lot to speculation, but the lore and mithology are very rich and well made
The graphics aren't top notch, but the game is beautiful. The level design in some areas is outstanding. Soetimes you are in this place and you go to that place and you think: "wow! look how these areas are connected!" it's magical

HOWEVER:
The pc port is one of the worst I've ever played...
For some people this game is simply unplayable without the help of some mods to fix the stuttering, bad framerates and low resolutions.
These mods do exist tho, and they greatly improve your gameplay experience :)

I'll be honest, it's an awesome game, but it does have a bad side. Basically... if you're playing with a friend that knows the whole game already and is willing to share his experience and teach you how to play, then sure, go right ahead, it's a great experience (get yourself a walk-though anyway, just in case). Otherwise, you might want to stay away from this game as it can be really frustrating.

In this game, you will want to avoid dying AT ALL COSTS. The game is really brutal regarding player death, penalty wise. Even if I'm up against a boss or difficult area I already know very well, I'd still avoid risk and stick to a partner to help me.

If you're alone... then you should first read about the level/quest/storyline or follow a walk-through (even with one, it's a really hard game) before playing the game because the game explains little of what to do regarding that. Unless, of course, you don't mind their deaths, but some of them can help you with bosses (in addition to having your human friend playing with you).
For the coop, it's kind of broken. It doesn't work as normal coop games does. First you have your own world in the game, then you can find these marks on the floor placed by other players in their own worlds, then you summon that player to your world. But when you do so, your world closes all exit areas and it's not an open-world game anymore. These summon marks can't be placed anywhere, some regions are single-player only, you should look it up on the interweb where players usually place their marks, most people place their summon marks in front of boss gates, but this is not always the case.

Oh yeah, and you have to be alive (not undead) to be able to summon coop players, that costs humanity, it's kind of a currency/item in the game. But while you're human your world can be invaded by other players to kill you.
It works like this... After you die while "alive", you spawn at the last bonfire you rested on as an undead. To become alive again, you need to spend a humanity point.

I could type all night and it still wouldn't be enough...

I don't agree with what you say about reading walkthroughs or having a friend next to you. The substance of this game is in the exploration, the fear, the priviledge of discovery, the trial and error.

So, to OP, I suggest you disregard what he says (I just think you're misled, nothing personal :-D )

About the coop : while I agree that it would be cool to be able to do coop with a friend (which you actually can by using DsCfix to help connecting with your bros if I'm not mistaken), you are supposed to feel isolated, lost in a world with its own rules (the world is non-euclidian for instance), that's why summoning a bro will connect you to random dudes.

You summon random bros who you know nothing about, you're unable to communicate properly with them (you can make gestures or drop items that will say basic things like "hello" or "I'm sorry". One might say that it dramatically impairs communication but... it's a feature ! Like, really this time !

When you play coop with a bro and can't communicate properly with him, it's no longer a player, it's one of those strange characters from a strange world.

Personally, I hated this game, it's frustrating that you don't have any idea where the hell you're supposed to go and, if you take the wrong turn, the enemies will kill you with only one hit, I understand that dying is an essential part of playing almost any game, but I want to enjoy my games, not get pissed after playing them, for those who'd like to prove me wrong, just a small comment: I don't want to start any holy wars here, I acknowledge that there are games like Dark Souls, Flappy Bird, e.t.c. which are made for a special niche of gamers that love their games hardcore to the maximum, but I guess I'm not that kind of a gamer, if you feel the same way too about yourself, then I suggest you save that money for something else more suitable for you

Wait for it to have GFWL patched out before you play it. Ignore everyone suggesting walkthroughs, guides and friends telling you what to do, a big part of the games charm was learning everything yourself.

Yup, one of the best games last decade. The PC port is shoddy, but there's fixes. And this month they will rid it of the GfWL curse

It's awesome. It doesn't hold your hand / constantly tells you what to do, it makes you dig up your smarts and reflexes, your prudence as well, and use them.

You don't die so often if you learn to look around and learn the enemies' patterns.

It isn't hard as in stupidly hard, the devs disn't simply made enemies damage sponges or things like that... It's just-what-you-need hard, just enough so that you feel awesome beating some bosses alone while you engaged them for the first time, or you faced them many times and got rekt every time.

its ok, if you dont mind bad camera, and a lot of walking through same zones because of checkpoint system. It's not as hard as ppl make it to be, the hardest part for me was the save system being annoying, and i felt im wasting time walking through same stuff again and again. Graphics wise its below average, and I felt the AI was rather bad (enemies getting stuck constantly, trying to attack you/shoot through walls)

it's a fun and challenging game. The dark fantasy theme is very good. if you're planning to play on PC controller is highly recommended. It's a poor port so get durante's fix before playing. also there 's a connection fix if you're planning on playing multiplayer. Grab that too and you're good to go.

I'm playing it these days (well...I started in may to be honest) and yeah it's an experience worth doing it. It's a bit frustrating sometimes because it doesn't explain itself to the player, and sometimes this is even a good thing, but most of the time it isn't.
Still, it has a great atmosphere
