Which server region would be best for you?
I rarely use discord, but I might check it out. US East is the best (totally not saying that JUST because I'm in it :p)

I'm in US East too but I picked it because a recent poll here showed most members from the US followed by EU (someone please link that discussion; i can't find it). US East should provide decent latency to the west coast and hopefully better pings to EU then routing through US West.

Yeah it's probably best for all regions. I know that when I play Rocket League with a friend of mine, and he has a friend from EU, we only play on US East because US West makes the EU person lag way too much lol

I'm sure they'll be fine :p The discord server is a great idea though. Maybe I'll meet a new friend ! Nah, I doubt it XD But it's another way to interact with SG users. I wouldn't mind voice chatting random strangers. Lots of people have already heard me sing horribly XD

Possibly, yes. Even if not, it would be a better way to get people to join them in games if a lot of people join the Discord server. It could be more efficient than just posting it on the SG forums. Guess it depends :p We shall see! I'll try to be on it when I'm not at work or sleeping.

"awkward" You barely talk :p So it can't possibly be awkward for you ;)

If I knew what was Discord (apart from ChronicDiscord) maybe I'd be interested. :P

Bond, it's just another thing like TeamSpeak and stuff. You can choose to voice chat or not. There's general chat rooms for messaging and stuff.

Bump! So far, there's 42 people who have joined the server. Usually, only a few people are talking in the chat at a time. It's fun, though!

I was expecting EU users to get <100ms latency from any EU based servers. My understanding of internet architecture over there might be wrong though. I was basing that on landmass and distances.
EDIT: For some reason I thought you were from Germany, but reading the chat history it seems that people think you're from Malaysia (?).

There was some previous discussion about a Discord server for the SteamGifts community and although some were unsure how useful or popular it would be, I figured it's easy and free so why not try. Plus, I rather enjoy setting up new Discord servers.
For those not familiar with Discord, it is a relatively new text and voice chat service in development that is geared towards gamers. Think Skype meets TeamSpeak/Mumble/Ventrilo. It has a desktop and mobile app or can be used in a browser. https://discordapp.com/.

The invite link is now hidden behind an sgtools check with no rules to prevent non-SG users from joining.
UPDATE: The server has nicely developed into a community molded by the suggestions, feedback, and contributions of our members. We have a few hundred members now and a smaller but decent group of regularly active chatters. We occasionally have gaming events and spontaneous karaoke parties.
