So, in researching a suspicious Black Ops giveaway (of 15 copies), I was linked to a thread where the gifter appears to indicate to a friend that he isn't actually giving the game away, and advises "P.S. Do not enter." Maybe the message can be left to interpretation, to a point, so I'll not jump to any conclusions and call for their head.

I stepped back one page on the thread however, and came across this:

http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1105655-SteamGifts.com-V1-No-title-edition?p=31212625&viewfull=1#post31212625

In it, his post reads:

"I dont care. I got two accounts on Steamgifts and I generate invites on one account and enter all raffles I can on the other."

So my question is, is there a way for the mods to detect this activity? And can people abusing the generous system provided here be removed?

It's sad that registration had to be disabled because of shitty activity on this site.

Edit 3: removing edits that might increase unfounded speculation of who the bad guys are.

Well, if he implemented a "One Account Per a Person/House." Rule, it could work, as it would be only 1 Account per an IP (Which I guess it could say that). But people could have brothers and sisters that want to enter.

The first person I invited was my brother and at the moment we still at the same place :)
You could check the steam accounts of those multiple IP people and see if they seem to be 2nd accounts or regular ones.

What about ISP's with Dynamic IP's?

IP banning is just retarded as IP's are not fixed to most home connections (and some commercial connections) and are usually changed every 24hours if not sooner.

I get a different IP depending on what computer I login to at uni as every PC has a public IP yet at home all 5 computers share the same public IP, to change the IP I just need to reboot my router.

I really don't like this, as both me and my wife would not be able to have an account. I have heard some other pretty good ideas though floating around. on the forums

My only concern is that it is only one user being banned, but multiple offenders who decide to abuse the system whilst not drawing attention to themselves (a la creating ridiculous giveaways).

Oh well, can't win them all I suppose. Good work CG and the mods.

Execellent, the thread ypu linked showed that he really cheated and musted to be banned, iam mean not his account but his IP(dunno maybe then people got banned here they really get IP ban..), yeah its harsh but its the onlt way to prevent cheating in this website.
I have 1 idea that could change thatt too, i mean before creating a giveaway you MUST enter cd-key for game you are gifting if not you cant create giveaway. It's 1 of things that can really be usefull against fake subs.

i hate sites, implementing IP bans. there are so many ways to walk around an IP ban for someone, who knows his ways, but those bans might also block so many users if the IP of the offender is dynamic.

He does not represent the entire FP community. They are nice, by my experience.

Edit: They also are calling what he did dumb.

for the most part i think the minimum account value stops this but i can see this becoming an issue with future "pay what you want" humble bundle style promotions as they can make an account have x$ worth of games for only 0.01 $ real cost

Yea, it's becoming a bit of a problem.

Well, maybe games like that can be excluded from determining the value of the account? Like if it seems that the games on his library appear to be from a humble bundle (like if he has ALL the games in a particular bundle(s)), then those games do not count towards the value of his/her account.

How do the various other web forums detect users who create multiple accounts? They seem to do a pretty good job of it. I guess one first trick might be to check if there are accounts that have logged in with the same ip address and also share the same password. Sound silly but I bet some people would do it. Call that the low hanging fruit if you will. Also might be worth checking the associated steam account details between the various userbase, as the site is using OAUTH to log into Steam and can obtain at least some details of the accounts, right? Check there for duplicate names. Of course everyone won't do that, but again it's more low hanging fruit. Actually, I just realised my password check idea won't work because the OAUTH mechanism won't support this, so perhaps focusing on matching certain steam user details could at least be one way.

I think that many forums use IP address checks based on the device: Many multiple account holders use the same computer to log onto their forum sites and submit messages and although it may be the case that the computer is shared with other users, when other details are compared, the multiple account holder can be determined (such as spelling mistakes, grammatical structure of sentences on forum posts, writing style, etc).

It depends on the forum software. I believe this one was coded by the site creator, so it depends on what he put in. On the sites that I ran (which used both commercial and open source forums), there was IP address logging, but the administrator had to go in manually to compare the accounts. A couple of the systems had plugins which would detect multiple accounts logging in from the same IP.

Even so, I had to manually investigate and confirm that they were two different people. In my experience, most people were pretty honest. You could generally tell who the trolls/abusers were.

This is quite interesting. I guess if two or more accounts are always entering into the same competitions it could also be a bit of giveaway.

True, but they could also technically be brothers/relatives/spouses/etc i.e. be connecting fromt he same house and thus IP address and like the same games??

Maybe a limit? or ID-card identification maybe.
Limit would be smarter though, because some dont have one.

I'd suggest like 3 accounts max.

registration to this site shall needs some 'tightening'

  1. recaptcha (but remember it was already broken by automated bots)
  2. resolving human computing image (typical example is show picture of some animals and ask what animal is 3rd from left)

this is not to solve the human made clones but would help a bit against automated bots

Wait, I thought we were talking about abuse by multiple account holders... are there automated bot accounts on the site as well?!?

I don't think so, because foir every single registration you need a new unique Invitecode and this limits the registration a lot. No need to set p a bot for a new user every few hours.

bots? i dont think anybody is using any. and even if there exists, it should be allowed, as long as its a bot making you enter for games that you like while you are gone.

Maybe there should be more restrictions on invites when they come back. In that same thread I mentioned in the OP the member in question mentions entering 100s of giveaways on all of his accounts (more than 2?) and winning 6 or 7 of them. What a fuck. The only reason he could do that was because he could generate invites to give to himself.

I haven't used any invites, and I will probably only use one if I ever do. I wouldn't mind having a invite code generator that is only accessible by the mods.
