Valve: Modders 'absolutely' need to be paid
Gabe Newell makes clear Valve's intention to bring back paid mods.

So what are your thoughts about this?
For me I would say "Just put a bloody Donation Button instead!"

I'd say not even a donation button on Steam, because Valve would get a chunk of it. That's the main reason Gaben is being so "nice" towards modders. Do not take me wrong, I do agree that modders deserve a form of compensation, but NOT through Steam.

If Valve tries that again, there will be a HUGE backlash again!

That would be like removing a feature that made you choose Steam over another platforms, so maybe there are legal bounds here? Like when Playstation removed the possibility to run Linux on their consoles and in the end they had to pay buyers. What if Valve were legally forced to refund all the purchases in the platform for all its users? :D

Paying mod is a huge nonsense and will kill the modding spirit.

1) Modding spirit is being free, this is a logic of sharing, of creating in the purpose to share with others. Nothing more.
2) It will seperate players between those who can pay and others
3) A lot of mods are buggy, abandonned, outdated after a game update. If it's free I can't say nothing. However if I paid I demand there is a monitoring to keep the mod working. What if it's not the case ?
4) What about mods which used another one as base ? If the second is paying, is it normal the creator gets money thanks to another (free) mods ? This creates legal issues.
5) We will get tons of mods stolen / plagiarized
6) We will get tons of low quality mods only to earn money.
7) What about mods with copyright contents ? It will be their end.

Also arguments from Bethesda / Valve suck :
1) We created the game so it's normal people pay for mods.
Fuck you, players already paid for the game they won't paid a second (third ? fourth ? etc.) time. Also modding gives a huge boost in sell and help a game to stay attractive many years later (who said morrowind ?).
2) Modders need to be compensated
First well...no. Mods aren't done for money. So strickly speaking they don't. Not saying I'm against donation but in a very tight definition, modding is free and even donation is kind of opposite with his spirit. Oh and if they need compensation, why did you take 80% of the sells at your first try ?

Let's see:

  • How they decide to split the revenue. That should be around 90% at least, not a pathetic 25% like last attempt. Otherwise, no credibility there that this is done "to support the modders".

  • How they handle mods depending on other mods, with or without giving proper credit..

  • How they handle re-use of assets from the main game/other IPs etc. (what would happen with stuff like Super Skyrim Bros )

I'm not opposed to modders getting rewarded for their work, but there's plenty of finer detail to work out to make this work in the right way. And Valve have repeatedly demonstrated they're no good with such finer details.

The thing is that they are not planning doing it "to support modders" at all :P
And they already showed us that they don't have any mechanism to stop stolen assets, both in greenlight and in mods
The question is not if modders need to be paid, the question is if valve should monopolize mods and get paid for them

if the whole money will go to modder i approve this Valve shouldn't try to cash in those modders work. For example there is a true hd rework mod for RE4 in work for quite some time. They are not asking for money but i would love to support that kind of mods instead of stupid lazy ass reskin mods.

If it costs money then it's nothing but microtransactions, I will not be buying a single one

If its not mandatory... and they can choose to get paid or not.... sure. I mean, they put in work. However.... it has to be regulated, they can't set their own prices. Also... why not just download the mod for free outside of steam? If I use Skyrim as an example....

I'd like the donate-button as well. In general, I have nothing against this idea. I might actually use mods if they felt more "official" because I pay for them. I do not feel like I must get everything for free. Atm I would not use any mods at all though.

This might get me in danger, but I don't care about mods :x

Having a donation button would be way better tho, I remember back in HL1 days @ one forum, one guy was giving a list of reasons why mods are great and I still remember "free" was in that list ;p

Trust me having mods wouldn't change anything.
I don't play games all the time, some people don't have free time. That's why I don't have that much playtime on any game

I can't see this going well. There are too many scammers on Steam and Valve have already shown themselves to be unwilling or unable to thoroughly prevent them from ripping people off. There will be free mods from Nexus Mods put up by scammers under their own name for money, or multiple free mods taken and combined in a pack as a feeble attempt to claim that it's original. Then there will be the ones that aren't dishonest, but will create paid mods using elements from free mods without permission. Plus there are those mods which use trademarks or copyrighted material. Those have generally been able to fly under the radar so far, but once the creators start to collect money for them they're bound to attract attention.

Add to that the inevitable incomplete and broken mods misrepresented in the mod shop, publishers demanding a cut of mod sales, paid mods being pirated and distributed elsewhere plus whatever cheap and nasty stunts I haven't even thought of but are bound to show up.

Steam Greenlight was also a great idea but we've all seen how much it gets abused. This won't be any better. Don't get me wrong, there are some brilliant mods out there and I would love to be able to give a bit of money to the creators as both thanks and encouragement to devote their talents to future mods, but unless this is done very carefully and constantly monitored to prevent abuse it's going to go badly.
