Actually people with low self-steem, or problems with it, often do this kind of stuff to "validate" themselves, feeling useful for a minute or two is gratifying. Or grat-i-frying.
(Note: I include myself in the "people with low self-steem, or problems with it" group; while it's not my only reason for making gibs, it certainly it's one, and one not good for me.)

There's still a factor of generosity involved, but I get where you're coming from! I used to be like that a lot. Still, even if there is that ulterior motive to make oneself feel better, the act itself remains appreciated by those around you - that what really matters in the end. ^^

I've noticed a rising amount of negative posts and threads lately on SG. From sad and gloomy topics to rants and angry posts, it just makes me feel slightly depressed.
