Most of the time you can't. Simply being a new user is not proof of a fake giveaway. Not having the game in your library or inventory is not proof of a fake giveaway. People don't seem to understand that.

I can't think of any reasonable proof, short of the user expressly saying something that illustrates he misunderstands how the site works or is intentionally trying to fake a giveaway.

It doesn't seem to me that anyone should have to show proof, since it is provided once the giveaway is over & the gift is sent, or isn't.

  • Multiple copies of a newer AAA game
  • User joined very recently (1 or 2 hours maybe)

Of course this wouldn't guarantee that it is fake. It is more likely though than if someone who has been here for a couple months does the same.

I agree. Then again, the internet is an outlet for some people to be rude or however else they want to behave. I'm honestly not surprised that people do this. I am disappointed though.

I meant that I don't really mind people kindly asking someone if he's sure about how the site works. What I do not like is all those people screaming fake and things like that.

My take on this goes one step farther. Points are plentiful enough that most can afford to enter giveaways, even if they think they might be fake (unless entering every giveaways mindlessly). Everyone can feel free to use their points on dubious giveaways or be more prudent with them. Whatever the case, they'll still be at 300 come next day.

No reason to fuss about it. Just report the gifters if they haven't delivered after 7 days and move on.

No worries, I got it. I just honestly think you should try and enjoy your time on sg and accept that lesser offenses may be overlooked from time to time. That includes some "calling out" especially if it's not rude or vulgar. I've seen threads closed for calling out though, and some suspensions, if I'm not mistaken.

There is a reasonable expectation though that all new users have at least skimmed through the FAQ, and I can assure you that many of us try and be informative, if they're obviously failing at FAQ reading comprehension. Even if sometimes we'd rather have a laugh doing it (asking for 3 copies of CoD as your first giveaway warrants that).

Just let everyone do their thing (helpful folks, fake gifters, and callers-out) and you do yours. We're all here to have some fun, right? :)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Some of what you are calling 'lesser' user offenses are anything but.
Saying all manner of horrible things to someone who is making a giveaway should be a more serious offense than say, entering for a DLC that you down own a game for. The people who are calling out others have clearly read the rules, as they are more often than not quoting them or linking directly to them. Even if they are not being offensive when they call someone out, they are knowingly breaking the rules to call attention to the notion that someone might be breaking the rules.

Perhaps I am too optimistic, but I read the FAQ the first day I got here, and I think that a large percentage of other users did as well.

Not everyone should be allowed to just do their thing. I can't recall the exact thread or the staff member I'm indirectly quoting (I think it was jade) but 'there is no free speech here.' When people are willfully cruel to new users they are establishing an atmosphere of elitism which I personally feel has no place here, plus they're likely to just chase off new members who would otherwise be giving generously to the community.

Well, you're taking my analogy a bit far, but in general I think sometimes it's more harmful to make a big deal out of the minor things, bundling them together with more serious transgressions. I've been clear on the fact that rude or offensive behavior should not be allowed, and I definitely agree that users who know and pretend to uphold the rules should be held to a higher standard. All in all, I believe support have been pretty good at curbing the more extreme behaviors. Some more of us try to help from time to time, not always with great success. I try not to dwell too much on that, as long as I do my best. That's all that's expected from any of us.

Well, I know public communities of several thousand people tend to turn into disrespectful mobs from time to time. I'm a bit of a recluse, so I've found some peace of mind in some SG oriented steam groups which offer a more sheltered environment. I'm less judgmental of the general public since I generally wouldn't expect much more than a minimum of civility. I wish you'll find your place here too, and perhaps reconsider. Good luck!

People like to comment, I guess they believe commenting 'Fake' and breaking the rules is more fun. People link them in the chat room too, even though it is pretty obvious what kind of supposed giveaway it is. The points will be given back eventually, so there's no real reason to cause a commotion. Just carry on with your daily tasks and ignore the user if all they do is comment fake on every giveaway they believe to not be 100% real.

There needs to be a probation period on new accounts. A lot of people who start a new account will make fake giveaways and never return to the site so if there was a 2 week or a 1 month probation where new account can't create giveaways it might help dwindle down the number of fake giveaways being made.

I reported several fake giveaways but no f*ck was given. I comment "fake" if it's really obvious and necessary, so people would put their points in good use. There's nothing wrong with calling out if it's too obvious.

Actually there IS ALWAYS something wrong with calling out, because that's the rules. The rules don't say "It's ok to call out in the following circumstances:". It explicitly forbids it.

I agree with this, philosophically. However, in the context of his original post he used the word "wrong" in the colloquial sense to mean "not against the rules". Thus I merely maintained his terminology.

It creates a sense of hostility. Yes maybe somebody who doesn't know how to use the site decides to create a 'fake' giveaway, that doesn't mean they should be attacked by you or anyone else. Maybe they need to learn how to properly use the site - calling them out like that won't solve anything. Either be more constructive with your comments or let support handle it.

People are donating their games on this site - what kind of community goes around attacking their gift givers? And sure you might say the fakes look 'obvious', but you're still attacking them based on an assumption. There's not much you're losing by entering since you're not paying anything and the points will be refunded anyway in the event that the gift doesn't show up. Let's make this a nice place where gifters are treated with respect rather than be treated as liars.

Well I don't know how new you are to the forums, but assuming that was around the time you signed up to the site or shortly after, that was probably around the time where the mod situation was pretty bad and not much was getting done. It wasn't until recent months (past 2-4) that the mods have been catching up and staying on top of matters

Honestly, reporting "fake" comments isn't worth it. They're only digging their own graves if they don't have proof. Staff can't deal with every single ignorant comment after all. There are many higher priority offences to deal with.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Good arguments have been made above for why this type of behavior is as destructive to the community as many more "significant" offenses, so I will not make them again. Regardless though, the rules are there for a reason and people should not be allowed to arrogantly shrug them off because they think they're too good for them.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

What indicates they are "arrogantly shrugging them off", or even aware of the rules in the first place?
They should be directed to the FAQ for a first offence, banned for a second. Everyone deserves a second chance and I don't believe suspensions are a reasonable way to deal with this particular situation.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I never said that first offenses deserve suspensions, though that is for the admins to decide. Either way, I think there needs to be a record with the admins that there WAS a first offense so that if the person repeats their behavior they can have a harsher penalty the next time.

For that reason, reporting is important. Also, as the OP pointed out, many of these people that are screaming fake or demanding proof also quote or link to the FAQ so they seem to know (or think they know) the rules. Thus, suspensions may be in order even for a first offense.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

My initial statement assumed suspensions were something the OP wanted these offences to warrant.

But of course you're right, there's the dilemma of not knowing who repeats the offence. So I suppose a report is necessary to keep support informed. I didn't consider those who blindly linked the FAQ.

Calling someone out based on rules you haven't actually read yourself. Now that's funny lol.

What makes you think everyone knows the rules or reads the FAQ? If there are newbies who don't know how this place works or trolls that intentionally create fake giveaways, then are bound to be people who are oblivious to the 'no public shaming' rule. I mean, it's human nature to try to call out on others who seem suspicious. Also, even though the cap is at 300, 300 is still only 300, and some people reaaaaally like their points so they're super vigilant about making sure they don't enter fake giveaways, especially if some of them are those huge packages that require upwards of 100 points.

And typically I would assume most people only call out fake giveaways when things seem a bit off, like if someone JUST joined SG on the same day, had less than 10 entries and/or comments, and created some random giveaway.

If you're questioning why support doesn't handle these reports strictly, well, I don't know if they actually do or not, but common sense would dictate that this isn't a huge priority above all the other issues that they have to deal with.
