Except the combat is terrible. By that, I mean it is the human doing the fighting, and a child at that. Everything is low energy. You are also not controlling Reg in boss battles.

Worse... by a massive margin, Goblin Slayers scene is child play in comparison... To note at least for what is animated there isn't any rape(or sex) scenes in MiA.
Potentially worse than everything that happens in Berserk(I would need to finish the Manga to say so,,, and everytime I consider reading further I get depressed since I know the author has passed)
to note... for Goblin Slayer... it doesn't go anywhere near that far after ep1, they really wanted to show how fd up the goblins in that world are.

Made in Abyss is one of those works... where while its amazing(easily in the top 5 of my favorite animes)... the stuff it gets into makes it so hard to recommend to anyone without knowing if they can deal with it. I have simultaneously told people its one of my 11/10s... but to not watch it in the same sentence many times.

I've only watched the first season of the anime (meaning to watch the rest someday but I keep postponing it) and it's a really good series... but yeah it can get very fucked up.
But that's kinda the point of the story as far as I could tell, that if you toss kids into a dangerous situation where nature wants you dead and asap them being kids will have no effect when a wild beast is tearing them apart to eat them. The brutality is part of the message and it happens to everyone involved regardless of age, my take is that it's a criticism of child labor and other practices where children too young to understand the risks of what they're doing are pushed into doing dangerous stuff by adults and society in general, basically a what if Pokémon was a bit more realistic and what would happen if you sent of a ten year old into a world where mice can electrocute you and dogs breath fire. The beauty of nature and how nature does not give a fuck about your well being.
