As there are still a surprisingly large number of people sporting Windows XP on some of their computers perspectives for Windows 7 look rather rosy.

So you're saying if I buy a genuine, sealed copy of Win 7 it can't be installed on legacy hardware and activated?

Well, I don't have the necessary hardware right now. With legacy I meant a system from around 2014 which should be plenty of powerful enough for most applications.
In this video the dude uses such a system and the installation is successful. Question is if a genuine product key will still be recognized by Microsoft activation servers though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9bNEU1dLJI

I heard also rumors of a slipstreamed Win7 version with all drivers updated until official EOL(2020) which would be a huge help in the compatibility department.

As soon as I stumble upon adequate hardware I'll snag it and try to follow through with this pet project as my HP laptop from 2006 with Windows 7 Ultimate x64 is a little to weak for demanding tasks although I implanted a dual core AMD processor instead of the original single core.

Around the early win XP thru Win 8 days, the OEM CDs were tied to a manufacturer. (Probably BIOS).
I could install a Dell Win XP (Home or Pro) OS CD on a new Dell Win 7 system and vice versa.
Had a couple system I would boot into different OS's that way. (Had to add new OS on a different drive in a certain order).

No idea if that applies to Win 10 or Win 11 systems since things moved over to UEFI BIOS. Havent tried.
