So, back when it first came out, I remember buying Unreal, and loving it. Thing is, 3D shooters were still relatively new, and Unreal was a leap forward. The Unreal Deal pack is now quite cheap, and I'm considering getting it. Should I go for it, or am I only kidding myself?

note: my steam wallet comes from Profitz, and will leave me with a few cents after purchase, but not much; alternatively, I'd buy other nostalgia games, classics I missed, or DLC for games that I like. So, not that I can't spend my money elsewhere, but not like I'd be missing out on anything, either

Should I get the Unreal Deal pack?

I'm in the same boat. I got an urge to play Unreal 1-2 for some reason but mostly the second one as i never finished it. Could have been that it was bad in some way or just that i didn't feel like it... Not sure if i should waste my last funds on the pack or get both portal games.

As great as it always was. And still supports the resolutions I used to play in, unlike Half-Life.

Like proximus said, Unreal 2 is probably the weakest of the bunch, that being said, UT 2004 and UT 3 are worth the entire price alone.

even for single player / non-multiplayer? I don't mind playing bots

Both UT 2004 and UT 3 have pretty solid single player campaigns. UT 2004 is my favourite.

Edit: Also, Unreal 2 is a proper single player game.

UT2004 is kicking ass with bots too. Well, at least as long as you stick to the official levels, which are properly coded and pathed for them to no not run around predictably and get stuck on any geometry. I actually love playing bombing runs with bots, despite it being one of the most-hated game type against humans.
UT99 bots are a strange mix. They turn into semi-cheating aimbots on harder difficulties, but they mostly use pre-set paths on every level, meaning you can predict where they are at any given time, or where they will be in the next second. That doesn't mean that even the most hardcore pros can't get their asses kicked on AS-Overlord though.

This is too true to not hurt :| Even though I play on the harder difficulties, I just...can't. Overlord has one of the simplest layouts in all AS maps, but god damn if that beach and subsequent cavern is not a pain in the ass. Plus, the random mortar explosions, miniguns, snipers on the top with zero sway and recoil, instakills, snipers perched up on the cannon...gah. I can even do AS-Oceanfloor on the harder ones, but I can never go past skilled on Overlord :/

Oceanfloor is like Rook: it seems easily defendable, but it only takes one attacker to get through and it is nearly impossible to stop that one player before they complete most if not all of the objectives in one swoop. Most often I have trouble defending them, I usually try to just constantly carpetbomb the entire area somehow.

The price is good to get the pack for U1 and UT and if I remember correctly you can also transfer them to gog (/connect) and get drm-free versions!

Unreal 1 is a nice retro shooter with typical late 90s FPS level design (run around to find levers which open the level-ending gate). And also a game that is allergic to lighting and has an LSD trip colouring palette (not as extreme as Mortyr though), but gamma levels can fix that. Unreal 2 was a pretty bland and forgettable one even for its time. I honestly don't remember anything of it other than having some strange-armoured female-only enemy types employed by Liandri.
UT'99 holds up rather well, even if the graphics now are a bit dated. UT2004 is still probably one of the best shooters. UT3 is… well, it exists, I guess.

I didn't like it at all that they changed the most distinctive map of 99 and made it into a bland-er version in 3. I'm talking about Facing Worlds, ofc :/ had to find a mod that replaced it with the original one

I remember only playing Unreal games for multiplayer. Checked out some gameplay videos on youtube now for their singleplayers and it seems like I didn't really miss anything.

I'd recommend Quake games instead, however Quake Collection costs twice as much and doesn't contain Quake 4 (which happens to be the only game I haven't played from Quake franchise, but I will buy it one day and correct that injustice).

GET IT!!!!!!!!!

No seriously, GET ITTTT!!!!!!!!!!

UT99 holds up incredibly well, I still play my disc version to this date. It's too good, and gives you 100 hours of gameplay at the minimum provided you decide to master all difficulties, weapons and guns (and believe me, the game is good enough to make you WANT to be better)

Ut2k4 is equally good; the pros are the improved assault levels, the onslaught levels are just like playing battlefield but with shock rifles and flak cannons, and amazing vehicles. And it has many, many, many maps for all categories, much more compared to '99. My gripe with it is the inclusion of the shield gun, which is spammed to hell by professionals and can make online play ridiculously challenging if you play with experts (though that may be a pro or a con)

UT3 is okay, I guess. I actually liked 3 because of the updated gameplay system (hoverboards, feinting death, memorable music) and in the cons it had really lesser maps compared to the above. But UT3 still gets map packs and mods to this date, and you can actually get both the map packs of the original and 2k4 for it, so it makes up for that. Plus, TITANS MOD!!

The other unreals are meh, I'd say at the price you're getting you'll get an extremely good return on the money you spend, the gameplay can rack up to 500 hours if you get into the game, and EVERYBODY I know got into playing it when I introduced it to them (we still have LAN parties to this date)

I played Unreal to death when it came out, and replayed it around 2008 with HD textures, and it was still a blast like not many other games.
Unfortunately I can't get it anymore, because it is not available in our Steam Store :-(

iirc Unreal 1 actually had more effects in software rendering mode, just something to keep in mind if you want to play it these days (unless they upgraded hardware mode at some point).
