Ugh. I hated spiral knights. Can't understand how it's so addicting.

Seconded. The game is basically the same all the time, the quests are easy, the dungeons are easy, the hardest dungeons are easy for low levels, the pvp is boring. Seriously, there are better games for sure.
If you want to stop playing it, get off the PC and go get a girlfriend.

lots of levels but they're mostly the same and very often ARE the same layout with a different
texture - not really any quests, more of a go kill things and get $ and material to upgrade weapons
or make/buy new ones
it's KINDA (and I know I'm gonna catch hell for saying this) like the old Gauntlet game with a different theme

I did, with a few friends who quite enjoyed it. The art design is terrible, the graphics are horrible, the animations are awkward and poorly done, the gameplay is atrocious in every sense, there's no sensible or even semi-coherent narrative and all quests are indistinguishable variations of "kill things".
So what, exactly, is worth playing it for? It's not for the gameplay, because it's both super basic, and extremely poorly executed, with laggy and awkward inputs. It's not for the graphics because the game looks horrible and cheap from concept art to animations. It's also not for the narrative, because there's none worth noting. I have boxes of cereal with more, and more compelling, narrative than this game. So... What does it have going for it?
I'm usually fairly lenient with free games on account of them being, you know, free. Sure, they're rarely great, but they often justify the investment of absolutely nothing, if only for a short while. But this is one of the rare cases that I can't, on a clean conscience, recommend at all. It's cheap, it's limited, and poorly executed in every area. This is a game for which "free" is still too high a price to pay.

yeahhhhh - certainly not the depth (get it? clockworks, going down, never mind) or cutting edge technology that keeps me logging in, but it's the only F2P that I've gotten at all interested in other than Team Fortress 2, which I've never really messed with but would like to start (jeez, I'm behind - why didn't I have games like this when I actually had time to play 'em)

True, but I think OP is worried that he's getting addicted to Spiral Knights.

I decided to try out this game called Irongrip: Marauders, which is a free to play available through Steam. It is literally a browser game, when you run it through Steam it brings up a internet browser and you play it in there. I put quite a lot of hours into that game, but felt pretty dumb for doing so considering it just some simple browser game thing. I mean initially it seems pretty interesting, but there's not nearly enough variety in the gameplay to justify the amount of time I spent with it.
It's basically a turn based strategy game. You have military type units (infantry, bazookas, tanks, etc.) and you attempt to destroy the enemies force. If you lose any units they are gone permanently, and you have to train more. You have hero units that level up and get better, they never die but do get wounded. The biggest flaw in the game and reason to quit is that the AI cheats. It always knows where you are and can shoot you without being able to see you. I mean it needs line of sight, but it doesnt need to uncover fog of war or shroud like you do to attack. God help you if they have the high ground, the hill blocks your LOS and they can just decimate you in no time.
Why oh why did I spend so much time on it...

I used to have this with League Of Legends and Dota/Dota2.
I still play both games now of course, but not as often as before (eg 4 matches in a row, around 1hr for each, then 4 more before sleep, good for my insomnia, bad for the day after)

I tried Spiral Knights twice and I still haven't gotten interested in it. Why?

Spiral Knights
it's repetitive, something new only occasionally, full of a-holes,
and a total freakin' blast
this is NOT my usual cup of jelly beans - I'm more of a DOOM, Half Life, Prey, weird/gross can't wait to dive
into Dead Space and Amnesia, bad-ass racing sim, eye candy and gore overkill kinda guy
but I'm gonna need an intervention or something
the only reason I'm not playing it right now is because downloading 2 games makes it lag too much
