I love game settings that let us disable screen shake, flashing, etc. And games that don’t even need such a setting.

If you are bothered by excessive motion, flicker, obscuring backgrounds, jerky scrolling, etc and are thinking about buying a game, search this thread for the game. If it's not here yet, please ask about it.

If you know of a setting that helps for some game(s), please share.

If anyone knows of a helpful forum or blog post, please link it.

SETTINGS and TIPS

  • BOB: off.
  • FOV: increase, or 90. Such as with Dishonored
  • QUALITY: decrease. Such as with Geometry Wars 3 (only helps a bit)
  • SCREENSHAKE: off or low.

  • Windows Invert Colors: Press Windows-+ then Windows-- to turn screen magnifier on then off. Now you can press Ctrl-Alt-i to invert colors and brightness.

RESOURCES

PCGaming Wiki Search a game, see FPS lock and FOV. Ex Also notice the screenshots on the right; for some games you can see if there's a setting for Screenshake.

Hotline Miami: Makes me nauseated.

Dishonored: Made me uncomfortable. Raising the FOV fixed the issue.

I can't stand screen shake, makes me feel ill-- I turn it off whenever the chance is there.

I never had motion sickness in my life ever until I played Doom 3: BFG so maybe that game is the worst for some who gets motion sickness regularly from games? But with a higher FOV it was bearable.

I set my monitor brightness low for some games, like Hexcells. It's a compromise though. Such as on Hexcells, I can't easily see the outside numbers that I've deselected.

By the way, for web surfing there are high contrast extensions that swap dark for bright and invert colors, so you can still see most everything. Chromebooks and Mac OSX include this in the OS, better than any extension I've tried. No screen flashing when loading pages. Of course pictures are shown in the negative.

Glad it helps!

I only use Windows for gaming, so didn't realize it also has this feature now: http://smallbusiness.chron.com/invert-colors-computer-43975.html

If you have problems with Deluminate like screen flashing, maybe using the OS instead could fix it.

I'm excited to try this with some games.

It does work in Win 10.

It might be helpful for games with very bright backgrounds. It works well for Hexcells except that color is important in that game, mainly blue and orange which are now swapped... too confusing with the hours I've already played.

I didn't have motion sickness when I originally played Half Life (1), but I did when I tried playing it again last year. I wonder what's the reason for the difference.

I had a lot of problems when playing Portal games. I couldn't even go for challenges in Portal 1 after completing the main campaign cause it was impossible due to major nausea. Portal 2 was no different. A friend suggested tinkering with FoV but no matter what I tried, nothing worked :(

Obvious things like turning off head bobbing. Arma (2) and Viscera Cleanup games start with it, but can be completely turned off.
Batman Arkham Asylum also has a little workaround somewhere to increase the distance between the camera and Batman. I don't have motion sickness, but felt uncomfortable that Batman fills 1/3 of the screen and I see nothing - easily fixable :)

Never thought I'd have problems like this, but gameplay footage of The Stanley Parable gave me motion sickness. Antichamber is also horribly nauseating.

Dead Space and Borderlands have given me enough motion sickness to never play them or play them in bursts.

I agree....Alan Wake makes me sick to play..Yes, I know there's a way to disable the motion blur, but it involves adding a parameter to the shortcut, and honestly i don't remember what it is(Plus it also removes the blur from the taken, which lessens their creepiness)......Does anyone actually LIKE motion blur, head bobs and having dirt splashed onto your screen effect?

I have the same problem. Try to make fov 90. Most probably that's the problem. I had that issue with Bioshock, Postal 2 and borderlands. They all have one thing in common, fov settings other than 90. And after I set it to 90 problem solved. No nausea or sickness.
