I've chatted in/started threads more this week than I have in the years since 2011 that I've been here. Ah, the life of a lurker who finally isn't too shy to speak up.

But yeah, I havent had a good night's sleep since around 2007. I either A.) wake up every two hours or B.) have really intense nightmares that leave me more exhausted when I wake up than when I go to sleep. And the rare case where both happens. I at least have a theory as to what has started/continued this habit: stress. Not wanting to go to much into my backstory (I may not be shy around yall anymore, but I'm not THAT comfortable yet), I've been hit with major losses and major changes left and right ever since 2007. Stress can muck up a sleep cycle, I've read.

But anyway, I'd like to hear your sleeping tips. I've tried melatonin or however its spelled (its a pill that's supposed to work with your natural sleep cycle, but it didn't ever really make a difference) and reading before bed (has helped a bit more). You'd think in nine years, I'd have tried more stuff, but nope. :-/

Since we're talking about sleep, Dream Tale giveaway

EDIT: a lot of folks have mentioned therapists/psychologists/psychiatrists, and I've been seeing some (prob shouldve mentioned that when i first made the thread, whoops). they've actually helped out a LOT with the things that have happened since then, at least while i'm awake and conscious. But I don't think I've ever mentioned the sleep thing to my psychologist (I have to my psychiatrist, she suggested melatonin and regular exercise). Should probably do that. Also, would explaining what the stress in question is help? I'm hesitant to do so, because I'm kind of afraid that it'll sound like I'm fishing for pity (which I'm not, its just that a LOT has snowballed since then, but in my mind a long list of "this happened to me" = "im a big crybaby who cant fight her own battles") but I don't know.

Agreed. Even if you don't manage to get the picturebook "I control my dream" state it's still helping a lot to alter dreams. Knowingly or not.

I've had sleeping problems my whole life. I'll tell you what my brother, who is a doctor, told me once:

Have a few drinks

You may try practicing Zen (no, not Yoga). It can even substitute sleeping to a certain degree.

I tried so many meds. They don't do shit. Unless you get the good stuff, but that's a) hard to get and b) can get you addicted. So you can't take it ever day and need one or two days inbetween each 2 days you take it. I know how you feel, I don't have nightmares anymore, but I don't get a lot of sleep myself. Never really did. I started to like lying awake and thinking about the day and everything, but if I really can't sleep (and actually want to) I listen to music/podcasts or... just stay awake until I'm tired enough to fall asleep. That's all I can contribute. Hit me up if you found something.

way back when there were articles on a chemical derived from urine that might promote sleep and i remember at least one later article that said it worked in some cases where other sleeping drugs failed; otoh I don't know how to separate legit science articles from ones that were flawed, so i can tell you there were such articles but not how good they were:

I had sleep problems a while back and the best thing I ever tried was magnesium supplementation, and now I sleep perfectly fine :-)

The thing to realize is that stress rapidly depletes the body of this mineral, and this is likely why you are experiencing these symptoms. Magnesium basically makes you feel calm and relaxed, in a very natural and gentle way...plus it provides many other health benefits as well. Your body requires sufficient levels in order to work properly. Most processed foods remove this which is why so many people are deficient in it now.

So please just try this, and I promose you'll notice very tangible benefits...and will feel overall much more relaxed with very noticeably improved sleep cycles and less stress. I've been taking 2 a day for 3 years now (once in the morning and again 20 mins before bed with juice), and I will never stop taking this...plus it's very affordable too.

My brand of choice is this one btw (magnesium citrate is the kind you want as the body easily absorbs it).

Anyhow all the best Alyssa :-)

Does it clash with/muck up any medications? Like bupropion?

The thing to avoid with that one you mentioned are MAO Inhibitors...which is something else entirely.

But magnesium is generally very very safe to take as it's a mineral your body naturally utilizes. In fact, from what I understand, bupropion actually depletes it within the body, as does stress...so you will especially need supplementation IMO. You're probably very deficient right now.

There are some medications where you might not wish to overdo it with magnesium, but they are entirely different...and not commonly taken by most...

Hope that helps :-)

i sleep better than normal if i've had a significant amount of physical activity in that day, if i'm especially tired, or had sex shortly before trying to sleep. i have trouble falling asleep if something big is happening the next day (especially a good thin) or if it's a different bed than i slept in the previous night.
i don't feel stress though so if your trouble sleeping is stress-related maybe none of this will help. good luck though -- hope you find something that helps!

Can also agree that exercise can help you a lot, especially if you do them till you cant move , then take a shower and see if you can sleep but not right away, wait for 20-30mins after the shower before you try.

You may want to try with some ambient/zen music to have in the background during the day or while you sleep but I doubt it will help you much since they can wake up memories(at least it helped me in short term).

And if its stress related then you are in tough luck without outside help, especially if its happening for 8-9 years already.

I completely understand, I rarely get to sleep as well. I had my nightmare for the 7th time in a row last night. My cat had a baby and some guy picked it up and smashed its head against a wall until it died. It was messed up.

Ugh, thats an awful one. I think my worst nightmare so far was one wherein my brother-in-law violently murdered my youngest niece, that's one of the only times I can remember ever waking up crying.

Melatonin alone does little, and doses should be carefully adjusted - over a certain threshold it has a detrimental effect. Tryptophan in conjunction with melatonin and does wonder for me, both to get sleepy and for the quality of sleep. Magnesium and niacin supplements could also help.
Stay away from BDZs, they're not suitable treatments for insomnia - sure, they'll knock you out, for a time at least. Then you'll quickly develop resistance, addiction and the effect will even be reversed depending on usage history and molecule - high potency BDZs can actually help in staying awake if one is used to them.
As always ask your doctor, possibly more than one - in my line of work I see way too many physicians with little to no understanding of pharmacology whose licenses should be revoked.

I fall asleep easily without the help of any medicine, and I almost never wake up during the night. My secret? Constant sleep deficit, but just to a mild degree which does not visibly impact my life. I'm sure that negative impact can be measured in a sleep lab, but as long as I feel good with it throughout the day, and as long as no-one complains about my performance, it's good for me. The other bonus is that I get 2 to 3 more waking hours compared to most people I know.
