Since this is super old news and it seems search didn't come up with anything, I'll just link it here.

I don't like to make introductions, I'll just say that itch is the official app for the itch.io store, which in my opinion is the best store currently; a ton of options for developers and also for customers. The app is constantly updated with tons of new features.

You can get the app here: https://itch.io/app

The Spanish translation is handled by yours truly, so feel free to tell me if there's something that feels wrong.

If Itch.io only wasn't so focused on that metro look, it could have actually become a substitute for Desura.
Some people prefer a text list of their games.

Metro look? itch.io's design is far away from it. Metro is based on dynamic squares and itch.io uses fixed rounded borders.

Desura is dead and it's ages away from what itch.io already does for both developers and costumers. It never came even close.

http://overland-game.com is a good example with the new Refinery feature, which is a full combo of Early Access + Community + physical delivery of stuff, and much more. More info: http://blog.itch.io/post/144305999624/itchio-week-day-5-part-1-itchio-refinery

And if you want, you can give itch.io 0 cents of every purchase, which is literally the lowest cut of the whole industry (gog, Steam and probably most of them take the industry standard of 30% for each purchase)

Well squares, borders regardless it looks crap for a desktop user and they are not focusing on it, not even in their app which is also far from being good, it's very basic.

On Tremorgames, here, there were always people who wanted Desura keys, while i see many pass on itch.io keys or don't even know what it is.
I don't really see that much valid points on that itch.io is that much further then Desura was.

For some reason lately the desura website seems to be up again, still no action on it, but atleast it's up again.

Desura has years and years of being around. When they just started, no one would want anything from them, I'm sure.

itch.io, again, is ages away from what Desura ever was, so they only have a bright future. They won't fuck up with the devs like Desura did, freezing payments and some other shit.

Today, if you want DRM free, best choices are gog or itch, but since gog are very restrictive on what they allow, itch.io is the place to go for anyone, anywhere. They also accept virtually any digital item, be it music, books, comics, dev tools, whatever.

I've never seen the interface of itch until now, it looks pretty good but I agree with some people preferring a text list, since I find them easier/faster to browse through.

As for being a replacement for Desura, didn't that kinda happen already..? I don't know lots about mostly-indie game sites but for the past few months I haven't heard much about Desura and itch.io seems to be all over the place. Not sure if the supposed bankruptcy has anything to do with it.

It has to do with it, if no dev or publisher on desura was getting any money from sales, so that's why they also stopped putting desura keys in bundles (and with the bankruptcy the Indie Royale bundles stopped) but they were always in alot more bundles then itch.io is now, and i only seen those in groupees bundles. Not because itch.io was/is better but because desura left a gap itch.io picked up after.

I'll raise a ticket for both the site and app to get a text list. Considering the pace they implement new features, it might be added soon.

I haven't heard of even one game dev that wants to have anything to do with Desura nowadays, they lost us.

I already send an email about the looks too and they said they raised a ticket about 2 months ago i think.

If the request is confirmed as "not right now" it will be implemented someday. Currently itch priorities are security and some features outside UI. But I nag the main app developer every week about UI stuff, I'll ask him about this next time he needs feedback.

Haven't checked the status, if they do change the look to a text list of games, more friendlier for pc users. i will embrace it but i think it will also be good for any other potential desktop user, i hope they do.

Hey, another update client, just what I needed!

Nah, I'll actually give this one a chance since it's open source, and seems to be the go to replacement for Desura. Hopefully they can expand their library beyond Desura. I wonder if they're going to integrate multiplayer and a messenger like steam?

Hm, Messaging maybe, Multiplayer I highly doubt it until itch.io is super profitable, this might take several years or never happen. Multiplayer (you mean Steamworks) it's a controversial topic... for one, the ideal scenario is not "binding" a game to a private company which might or might not get sold and servers deprecated. That would kill tons of games right now.

Multiplayer integration as in not hosting the server per sey, but facilitating it by allowing you to join the same server as your friend by right clicking their name in the messenger. Same with steam, minus the microtransactions.

it needs something like steamworks anyways, meaning that the developer has to implement an itch.io API which is non-existant now. Not possible in the near future I think.

I don't doubt that it will require some work, but enabling friends to play games together is one of the biggest appeals of Steam. Digital distribution is great, and so is open source, but to compete in a significant way itch will have to replicate some of Steam's features.

I disagree, there are tons of gems in itch.io. Currently Steam is filled with shovelware and clones of the same thing over and over again. itch.io is full of innovative games, different stuff; though it's not for everyone since there are several experimental games.

Check the randomizer, it's a great tool to discover new games: https://itch.io/randomizer

One of the problems is that many of the great games on itch are also on Steam, and since steam has more users people are more likely to buy the game there. Also most people aren't too keen on buying a game twice, it would be cool if they implemented something like GOG connect.
