If you post, the thread already gets bumped to the top. In many cases, the topic has run dry by the time it gets to the 2nd page anyways. The forums are not nearly as fast moving as trades.

Not a good idea. Plus people would overuse it, I mean some already bump their thread in less than an hour just because it's not on the top 10 threads in the first page and I really don't understand it.
Also, imagine someone with, I don't know, 20-30 or more open threads bumping them all at once...

A charge-based system, like "You have 5 bumps,1 bump is recharged per day" may work, and let people bump trades which are still valid without posting comments that don't contribute to the discussion (commenting&deleting the comment no longer works, too). Max bumps could be tied to account level to be extra cautious.

I still don't see the point. If noone takes part in a thread, what's the need for it to be constantly on the main page? If it's a thread that occasionally gets updated and needs visibility, then it can be bumped by a post to mention it was updated. If it's a reminder that something is ending, then it can also be bumped with a post (inb4 someone bumps their thread every hour before a deal expires, lol). Plus now with categories, most threads are in the first page of their respective category for a longer time.
Also, a tool like that will have users use it on cooldown, meaning it would pretty much defeat the purpose since everyone would bump their threads and the same threads would be on top again.

It'd serve a purpose for ongoing events that last more than 2-3 days(after which most conversation dies) but can still benefit from continued publicity. I do agree that it's best to just let the majority of threads die naturally; And perhaps the amount of abuse it might bring overshadows the benefit that only a few threads would gain from using the feature in the way it was intended. In SGv1,this was solved by silent bumping those threads, but with the new comment mechanics(deleting your comment removes the thread from the front page) this creates unnecessary clutter.
I still think the charges-on-cooldown system might work; To prevent threads unnecessarily being bumped, something like a minimum level of 2-4 to have the feature unlocked might be a good idea; Perhaps with extra bumps or faster CD on level 5/6 (more than that and we're really going down to select users.)

I'm really confused now. Whenever I bump one of my threads, sometimes I literally just say "bump". What exactly is wrong with this? And what's the point of invisible bumping?

I have a topic and I bumped it some days ago and people entered the chat, so it's not a problem. It depends on what the thread is about..
And yes, a restriction like "you can bump a 1-2 threads at 3 days" or something like that, would be great.
And lets remember that forum platforms like phpBB, IPB, vBulletin have the bump feature.. and this forum is not far from them, as of now.

I'm a little confused why you are so adverse to posting for bump. It accomplishes exactly the same thing, but just requires the tiniest more effort.

It would be nice if the op can do a thread bump, the function is already on steamtrades, why not on the discussions too?
