So sad I don't have AMD card right now :/

Will it move like this though, thats an important question to me.

Yes, it basically makes each strand of hair an object with it's own physics.

If this is a set up, what runs on every DX11 card, then what PhysX is, what's nVidia exclusive feature? LOL...

TressFX uses the DirectCompute programming language which isn't exclusive to AMD so therefore it should work with any DirectX11 graphics card including nVidia.
It does look quite impressive anyway.

Do owners of AMD cards get PhysX? NOPE.

AMD isn't patenting this, reports say. Nvidia may have access to this.

The article states that TressFX uses DirectCompute programming language which is available to any DX11 GPU which would mean it will be able to run on nVidia cards.

AMD's currently producing the best cards again. nVidia will come out on top again within the year, followed again by AMD winning. Again.

My AM3-slot Quad-core Phenom II is still not being taxed fully by any games yet. I fail to see where Intel has a practical win here. Sure I'm getting close now that two cores are sometimes hitting 80% while gaming, and still two other cores are only handling background OS tasks. But this means that I'm still playing games at max setting with a processor that's four years old. A new processor cannot noticeably improve my gaming experience.

Multiple GPUs, however...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Many AMD GPUs offer better value for money than Nvidia's GPUs. The price/performance ratio is very often better for AMD's cards. AMD's CPUs also offer good performance for their price.

Also, the technology makes hair look more realistic and it has nothing to do with hair styling. But since you seem to hate AMD, you probably don't want to use it even though it works on Nvidia's cards too.

You should be happy that AMD exists, because otherwise there would be no competition for Intel and Nvidia, which wouldn't be good for consumers. Hopefully AMD's console hardware deals will help them, since they haven't been doing that well financially recently.

Growing up, it was ATI (bought by AMD) that kept providing the better value for your money. And for a long time, AMD's processors and ATI's video cards produced a lot more heat than a comparable Nvidia card.

Today, the NVIDIA GTX 480 provides the most bang for your buck. Do note that this is not the most powerful card, but it will play most of today's big budget games at max settings for cheaper than many weaker cards.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I assumed everyone knows that ATI and AMD are the same thing nowadays. Only "problem" with GTX 480 is that you have to get it used, since at least here you can't find it from stores anymore.

Ive owned several ATI/AMD cards over the years & They never seemed to work as good in games they should have.

Playing X3: Terran Conflict with a 4850 & A 5950 was a little choppy... Never had any trouble with my 560 Ti though, I can still run 95% of the newer games at ultra! :D

I'll never buy AMD again, The cards might be cheaper but they are also of lesser quality (Both the GPUs & Drivers). I say what I tell everyone: If you want assured power get nVidia & Intel. If you want to have something like the "real thing" but not quite (And cheaper), AMD is the way to go.

Glad to finally see something like this available. Alice Madness did a great job with that as well, but if i'm not mistaken, it ran on the CPU for any AMD GPU ownsers (Physx), so this will probably be a step forward.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, nVidia is notorious for making their technology proprietary and not letting it run on other chipsets. Altough some people have made pass-through for Radeon cards so it can work on there too if you'Re willing to screw around a little bit with your files.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You can go into the settings file for most games and just set PhysX to 1 with an AMD card.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes but you're running Physx off the CPU instead of the GPU, something that is not as fluid (i cannot imagine trying to run Borderlands 2 with Physx off the CPU on an I5 and a 7970 for example).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Are you sure? If worst came to worst, could you model your AMD card as an Nvidia card (major screw-arounding ofc) and trick your comp into thinking it was an Nvidia? It would probably take a bit off performance, but hey, PhysX

I hadn't bothered with it for a couple of years and it seems the guy didn't keep making it's patch. It was mostly a proof of concept to show that AMD cards could run PhysX code just as well and that nVidia was artificially locking it out. nVidia however went to great lenght to prevent this. Now the only available patch will allow you to run PhysX on an nVidia GPU of a secondary card while you have an AMD GPU on your primary card.

So worse then Phsyx.....but only for hair.

Dear god AMD, what have you created.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

To be fair... PhysX started off poorly (Do I even need to remind people of the god awful impression left by Cryostasis's single digit framerates even with PhysX off? The poorly optimized implementations of PhysX in Sacred 2, Darkest Of Days and GRAW2?) but now it's fairly easy to run and games like Dark Void, the Batman games, Mirror's Edge, Mafia II and Borderlands 2 take full advantage of it. This thing looks as useful as the Übersampling option in The Witcher 2 or the DX11 mode in Homefront, slightly prettier and it makes your game look like a power point slideshow.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Haha true, love them power point presentations.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't care how awful it runs. Performance and stability are subjects to change. New driver or a small patch for a game, and all your framerate problems are gone.
I do care when they say it's realistic hair and then we see them not following the laws of physics. Or when Lara turn her head and her ponytail looks extremely triangular and is floating in the air rather than falling on her shoulder. If it's the case of new technology being poorly implemented then they really should've waited.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It could be the fact he is using an nVidia card.

TressFX is able to run on any DX11 card, but could run better on AMD GPU. I have no proof of this, just speculation. Chances are if it's that bad on nVidia though, AMD won't have some magical way to fix it.

Yeah I know but doesn't that suggest the tech was already available, just not implemented yet?

Alice kinda used it though if you ask me...just not to the same extent.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Looking at Alice: Madness Returns, similar tech has been available for a while. The fact they haven't released anything or even mentioned it since the tech demo could indicate that they scrapped it for whatever reason. Unfortunately the way tech demos work, they aren't always accurate representations of what is actually capable, just look at early videos of Aliens: Colonial Marines compared to the final release.

The big thing about TressFX is the fact that it's not restricted to AMD GPU which would make it a better choice than anything nVidia has to offer as it as available to a wider market. As long as it's not a total flop that is.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Guess we will see, but it does seem like Physx could accomplish this from what Alive shows, but yeah it would be nice for both AMD and Nvidia gamers to be able to take advantage of it easily.

Gotta see if it sticks I suppose, it will stick if its not TO harsh on the GPU, I mean if this feature drops the fps to unplayable levels on my 460 I probably will always check disable in settings.

Here is an HD quality video of it in action, same as the one BloodEmblem posted except higher resolution. The shadows from the hair make it look horrible in this video.

As well as some gameplay with it enabled, although it's so dark you can hardly see it.

Before we get a huge bandwagon of people who don't understand computers sharing their opinions, let me just state this.

There is hardly any driver support for AMD or nVidia so the performance will only increase

Same thing happens almost every time a new GPU or feature is released.
