After the sucess of my first post and seeing how many people still love the most forgotten subgenre, I've decided to change it into a monthly thing. I don't know how long it'll last. Could end this month, could go on for ever. Let's celebrate strategy games!

Before anyone asks why a february giveaway is starting in january, 2 reason: 1) february only has 28 days and I want it to last 30 days. 2) I won't be here on tuesday to create this topic.

About the game: Since last month I gaveaway a hd remake of an old game, the GA of the month will be for a game released last year : Cossacks 3. Lvl 1+ as always.
This way no one can say that there aren't decent new strategy games coming out anymore. Totally not dead genre guys!
Btw, there are still 2 days left to join january GA.

Ok, after some encouragement, I've decided to create a group focused on strategy games, so we can play together, share news and create GAs for strategy games. Tell me if you want an invite!

Edit: Group-only event has started. Group only GAs

I'm not sure if I should change this topic to group recruitment since, it's not the focus of the thread. Should I?

Till now, I only have played Age Of Empires and Age of Mythology, two great games, I'll play Dawn of War soon. Bump!

The first and the second are radically different. The former is a lot closer to Aoe/AoM with base building and stuff while the latter reminds me more of company of heroes. No base building, you just capture points. Still great though!

I was going to include Total Annihilation, but the poll was already big enough. Also forgot about BFME. Never heard about Ground Control.

'Tis sad, since it is one of the best strategy/tactical games ever created. Its spiritual successor was World in Conflict (same studio).

Bump. Thanks. I love TA but my son always beats me. He won 998 games out of a 1000. So you can see even though I'm a rank amature I do love this type of game. Lol

Out of all these Company of heroes.
Out of all RTS I'll pick Hegemony Rome: Rise of Caesar and Knights of Honor. Both are RTS on a grand strategy map, truly unique games.

Knights of Honor really was awesome. But only for its round based parts, the real time battles were rather dull.
And I'm surprised why you picked the worst of the 3 Hegemony titles. :)

Knights of honor is easily my favorite game of all time. Hegemony Rome I liked because of the whole gaul campaign, I live in Belgium and I'm a sucker for that time period so it's nice to see smaller tribes like the Nervii (they have a capital and I live there) represented in that game. I know the other games are more polished but the thread is about favorite and not best game.

Too many great franchises to choose from but Battle for Middle-Earth 2 stands out as a favorite for the simple reason of the great Dwarf faction. The character designs and aesthetic are magnificent

Really? I loved BFME 1, I still play it now and then with some friends, but I just couldn't stand the second one. Idk. I hated some gameplay choices, like having to build farms distant from each other for more resources, he weird way to build walls connecting them to your castle...

First one was ok, but the Dwarves made the second one a thousandfold better imho:) I actually liked that you had to construct resource buildings farther from each other, it seemed realistic for mines at least.

After taking a look at your profile I understood why you liked BFME 2 more than the first xD

I wish they would release more strategy games that require thought and less first person shooters

If only devs could stop releasing more-of-the-same survival games and start creating more strategy too. ^^

All of them great franchises but for me(mostly due to emotional attachment) I can't vote them over Settlers and Dune. Yes, we are old farts ._.

If Paradox get their act together and release Vic3 before HL3, I'll create a GA for it! xD
But seriously GSG GAs will certainly happen sometime in the future, it's my most played strategy subgenre after all.

I consider games like that different from "real time strategy" since there is no actual combat, just "Risk-style" army stacks and dice. Grand Strategy is a great genre though, CK2 being my favorite.

I owned some budget AoE fantasy themed RTS when I was younger. It probably wasn't all that good but I loved it. Could never remember what it was called though.

Warcraft is veeeery special to me <3 You should make a Steam group for RTS :)

Warcraft is love, warcraft is life. I though about it, but people are lazy when it comes to joinning stuff and I want everybody to participate. Maybe I'll ask you how to create/organize a nice themed group in the future xD
ps: I'm blind, not deaf >> you're not prepared! :D

"My hatred is unending" beats both! :P

I don't think people are lazy when it comes to joining groups. Group recruitment topics are filled with applications :) I think RTS deserves its own group.

RTS as a whole. I honestly didn't even hear of the game your group is focused on. I also don't like multiplayer focused groups as I'm a solo player :) I like playing my RTS in my own pace :P

not yet :) I've only played Endless legends and SOASE: rebellion of your groups list. Always wanted to try SotS though.
I was thinking about starting a group, but a more general strategy group, instead of focused on some games, to try to get people to play more strategy games together, with like a multiplayer game of the month system where people would play with/against each other and also trying out a different game every month.. Maybe I'll do it later this month or next month, idk.

most forgotten genre

Unless you only talk about the RTS subgenre, I don't really understand your comment. 2016 has been awesome for strategy games.

Favorite RTS franchises:

  1. Total Annihilation / Supreme Commander
  2. Starcraft
  3. Age of Empires

AoE though I mainly played it before I had a steam account. I bought it on steam, too, but haven't found much time to play it there, yet. Well, I'll finish studying in summer, maybe more time then. That's my big problem about strategy though I love strategy games: They are nothing you can do in five or ten minutes at a time. You have to sit down and concentrate, only then it's fun.
