So I won my first giveaway, but the creator of the giveaway e-mailed me saying they don't actually have the key for the game that was listed. They apologized, saying they couldn't check the CD before creating the giveaway because it was from CD-Action. Instead, they sent me keys for 3 other games and asked me to check "Received" for the giveaway.

I haven't tested the keys they sent, one of which is for a game I already have anyway, but I'm not sure how I should proceed. Assuming the keys are valid, I did receive a game from the giveaway, but it's not the game that was offered. Any suggestions?

You must receive and activate the exact game listed in the giveaway.

That's still not allowed and if he doesn't send you the proper game, checking "Received" may get you in trouble later.

By the way, for what game was the giveaway?

You would be suspended for marking it received, if you didn't receive it.

If he won't give you key for game you won mark as not received. Otherwise you can get suspended for not activating game you won on your account

The best course of action is to mark it as not received.

That's the general feeling I was having as well. Any thoughts on what I should do about the game keys he did send?

He gave them to you, use them as you wish. He was willing to let you get in trouble so he would have the CV and no mark on his own account.

Well, it's an assumption that that was the intention. This happened to me recently, I was not given the correct game and marked it as "not received", but also did not activate what the person sent as a substitute.

What they all said. But if you do wish to accept a substitute game, the gifter can submit a support ticket to have the giveaway game changed to reflect the game given with proof that you agree. These tickets take a long time to address though, and you'll need to mark the giveaway as "not received" in the meantime.

I wasn't aware they could be changed. Or was it just a feature not often used since I'm assuming it goes through CG?

Correct, though SGv2 has this as a support ticket option which can be approved like re-rolls on the current site.

Wow, that is awesome. Good to see useful additions like this being added. Can't wait for it to go live.

Should I try and activate the keys I was sent? Assuming they work, how would I ask the gifter to open the support ticket to change the giveaway game?

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I took a second look at the keys I was sent, and the keys for the two games that I don't already own aren't even Steam keys. Now I just have to wait until Sunday so I can mark the item as "Not Received"

Bummer, as I was really excited to have won a giveaway. Oh well, on to the next one!

See if maybe the person can buy the game again and give it to you.

I know that with one of the giveaways I did, I had been putting up so many in the span of three days (I'm at 18 giveaways), that I accidentally put up a key I had used. It didn't hit me until the day before the giveaway ended, at like 2am on the morning it ended while I was in bed trying to sleep, that I may have used that particular key.

When the giveaway ended, I sent the key to the winner and told him to check it, that I may have used it already and explained to him that it didn't hit me that it may have been used until 2am that morning (I've created all of my giveaways to be for one day).

He replied and said that it had been used, so since I've been having financial troubles, I borrowed my husbands debit card and bought the bundle that I got the game from again, just so he could have the key. :)

Perhaps if you are lucky, the giver bought the game from a bundle, and they can get it again as well if it's a cheap one like the one I got mine from. (bundle I re-bought just to get the game for the winner was only $3.49)

That depends on what were you supposed to get on Steam VS. what did he give you and on which platform.
